Yahweh’s Name where the Phrases “the Name of the LORD”, “I am the LORD”, and “My Name is the LORD” Appear in the New American Standard Bible

I am in the process of revising His Name is Yahweh: Revised Edition. The next edition will be called His Name is Yahweh: Comfort Print Edition.

As I grow older, I realize that larger print helps a lot, but there are a few things that I wanted to add to this edition that will differentiate it from the other editions. I plan to include a few exhibits that I think will add great value to the book.

Below is Exhibit 2.2 from the Comfort Print Edition. It shows Yahweh’s Name correctly every time the New American Standard Bible uses these phrases:

  • “the Name of the LORD”
  • “I am the LORD”
  • “My Name is the LORD”

Examine this exhibit carefully, and I think you will be surprised.

Candidly, I have a hard time understanding how a preacher who has a seminary degree can justify not using Yahweh’s Name the way He intended and expects. I can’t think of a good excuse, an excuse that would pass muster with Yahweh, for ignoring the fact that Yahweh commanded us to declare His Name to the world.

I’ll leave it at that for now.

Phrases in the Bible: “the Name of the LORD”, “I am the LORD”, and “My Name is the LORD”

I have identified every instance in which the phrases “the Name of the LORD”, “I am the LORD”, and “My Name is the LORD” appear in the New American Standard Bible, and I have placed Yahweh’s Name where it belongs.

Sometimes in the NASB, the phrase “the Name of the Lord Jesus” is used. Yahweh’s Name belongs there because the Name of the Lord Jesus is Yahweh. See Philippians 2:9-11:

“Elohim highly exalted Him [the Messiah], and bestowed on Him [the Messiah] the Name which is above every name [Yahweh], so that at the name of Yeshua [Yahweh] every knee will bow, of those who are in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and that every tongue will confess that Yeshua the Messiah is Yahweh, to the glory of Elohim the Father.” (Philippians 2:9-11)

I have also replaced the title “God” with “Elohim” and “LORD of hosts” with “Yahweh Sabaoth”. Yahweh Sabaoth means “Yahweh Master of legions”.

As you read these verses, pay particular attention to the promises associated with Yahweh’s Name.  Yahweh bless you as you discover the power in His Name.

“My Name is the LORD”

The exact phrase “My Name is the LORD” appears only one time in the Bible – Jeremiah 16: 21.  What Yahweh said at that moment is crucial.  To understand the context, you need to read Jeremiah 16: 19-21:

O Yahweh, my strength and my stronghold, and my refuge in the day of distress, to You the nations will come from the ends of the earth and say, ‘Our fathers have inherited nothing but falsehood, futility and things of no profit.’  ‘Can man make gods for himself?  Yet they are not gods!  Therefore behold, I am going to make them know — this time I will make them know My power and My might; and they shall know that My name is Yahweh.’” (Jeremiah 16: 19-21)

Those verses refer to an event that hasn’t happened yet.  The day is coming when people from all over the world will stream to Jerusalem seeking Yahweh and His truth.  When they arrive, they will say, “Our fathers have inherited nothing but falsehood, futility and things of no profit.”

Yahweh’s response is intriguing.  He says, “Can man make gods for himself?  Yet they are not gods!  Therefore behold, I am going to make them know — this time I will make them know My power and My might; and they shall know that My name is Yahweh.”

From Yahweh’s response, it’s obvious that man can make gods for himself, and they give them other names.  It’s been happening since the beginning, but there is only One true Elohim — Yahweh.

Something dramatic is about to happen.  I think it will rival if not exceed the things Yahweh did when he delivered the Children of Israel from bondage in Egypt.  I’ve drawn this conclusion because of Yahweh’s final statement: “Therefore behold, I am going to make them know — this time I will make them know My power and My might; and they shall know that My Name is Yahweh.”

I think Yahweh is angry.  He revealed His truth to the prophets, and they recorded it meticulously in the Tanach, or the Old Testament.

What did men do?

They stripped His Name from the Bible and placed titles where His Name belongs.  This Yahweh never intended and He doesn’t condone.  There are many reasons why I know this, but the most obvious one is that we have salvation in only one Name — Yahweh. The other reasons are below:

  • That’s what Yahweh said. (Isaiah 43: 11)
  • That’s what Joel said. (Joel 2: 32, Joel 3: 5 in the Tanach)
  • That’s what Peter said. (Acts 2: 21)
  • That’s what Paul said. (Romans 10: 13)

It doesn’t get any clearer than that, and you can’t find a better list of witnesses.  Yahweh is going to make sure that everyone knows who He is by Name.  At the end, He will make sure that they get it by declaring His Name Himself, probably along with great signs and wonders to emphasize the point.

For believers, that will be a time of rejoicing.  For people who have rejected Yahweh, that will be their worst nightmare.

“I am the good shepherd. I know My sheep and My sheep know Me — just as the Father knows Me and I know the Father — and I lay down My life for the sheep. I have other sheep that are not of this fold. I must bring them also. They too will listen to My voice, and there shall be one flock and one Shepherd. The reason My Father loves Me is that I lay down My life — only to take it up again. No one takes it from Me, but I lay it down of My own accord. I have authority to lay it down and authority to take it up again. This command I received from My Father.”

John 10: 14-18
