Mount Tavor, The Mount of Transfiguration

Mount Tavor (a.k.a., Mount Tabor) is in the Jezreel Valley.  From the top of Mount Tavor, you can see Nazareth, the top of Mount Carmel where Elijah had a confrontation with the prophets of Ba’al, and Megiddo (i.e., Har Megiddo or Armageddon).

Mount Tavor is also called the Mount of Transfiguration, because the Messiah was transfigured at the top of the mountain.  He was standing there in His glorified form with Moses and Elijah talking about His coming crucifixion.  Peter, James, and John were witnesses.

The transfiguration is mentioned in Matthew 17: 1–8, Mark 9: 2–8, and Luke 9: 28–36.  Peter talked about it in 2 Peter 1: 16–18.

Mount Tavor is also mentioned in Judges chapter 4.

Matthew 17

Six days later Yeshua took with Him Peter and James and John his brother, and led them up on a high mountain by themselves.  And He was transfigured before them; and His face shone like the sun, and His garments became as white as light.  And behold, Moses and Elijah appeared to them, talking with Him.

Peter said to Yeshua, “Lord, it is good for us to be here; if You wish, I will make three tabernacles here, one for You, and one for Moses, and one for Elijah.”

While he was still speaking, a bright cloud overshadowed them, and behold, a voice out of the cloud said, “This is My beloved Son, with whom I am well-pleased; listen to Him!”

When the disciples heard this, they fell face down to the ground and were terrified.  And Yeshua came to them and touched them and said, “Get up, and do not be afraid.”  And lifting up their eyes, they saw no one except Jesus Himself alone.

As they were coming down from the mountain, Yeshua commanded them, saying, “Tell the vision to no one until the Son of Man has risen from the dead.”

And His disciples asked Him, “Why then do the scribes say that Elijah must come first?”

And He answered and said, “Elijah is coming and will restore all things; but I say to you that Elijah already came, and they did not recognize him, but did to him whatever they wished. So also the Son of Man is going to suffer at their hands.”

Then the disciples understood that He had spoken to them about John the Baptist. (Matthew 17: 1-13)

Judges Chapter 4

Read Judges chapter 4.  It helps to understand what took place on and around Mount Tavor.

Amazing Sites in Israel

Israel is loaded with amazing sites.  Before you start traveling around Israel, it pays to get familiar with the places you are visiting.  If you don’t, you’ll walk past important sites and never know that you were right there.

It takes a while to explore Israel.  Katie and I have been doing it for more than 20 years, and we have just scratched the surface.  Right now, we are digging down in Jerusalem.  We have a long way to go, but we know a lot.  That’s not bragging.  It’s a fact.

Mount Tavor, The Mount of Transfiguration

Below is a video showing Mount Tavor.  The climb to the top is breathtaking, and it is steep, very steep:

“The glory which You have given Me I have given to them, that they may be one, just as We are one; I in them and You in Me, that they may be perfected in unity, so that the world may know that You sent Me, and loved them, even as You have loved Me. Father, I desire that they also, whom You have given Me, be with Me where I am, so that they may see My glory which You have given Me, for You loved Me before the foundation of the world.” (John 17: 22-24)
