Yoel Guzansky—Slowly but Surely: Growing Relations between Saudi Arabia and China:

On October 27, 2016, a joint anti-terrorism exercise was completed in China, with dozens of combatants from the Chinese and Saudi Arabian special forces participating. The exercise, the first of its kind, invites an examination of trends in China-Saudi relations as part of the network of ties between world powers and leading Middle East states.

From China’s perspective, enhanced relations with the Saudi kingdom address a variety of interests, including: promoting security and energy interests and boosting its economy; balancing its strategic posture, which is heavily based in East Asia, by turning westward; improving its internal stability in western China by striving to stabilize the near periphery in central Asia and the distant periphery in the Middle East; alleviating the domestic threats of radical Islam (posed particularly by the Uyghur minority in the Xinjiang region) and minimizing the external criticism of China’s treatment of its Muslim citizens; and finally, recognition of its standing as a global power, while increasing its involvement in an asset-rich region.

From Saudi Arabia’s perspective, China constitutes a stable and reliable strategic partner that complements the kingdom’s strategic relations with the United States, mainly on economic and political dimensions, and without the unpleasant Western criticism on issues relating to human rights and democratization. Therefore, both countries are finding a common comfort zone in mutual respect of their sovereignties without trying to change each other: they are both concerned about the challenges to their internal stability posed by the upheavals in the Middle East; both are seeking stability and security in the Middle East and a safe flow of energy; and they both recognize a zone of common interest in economic development while safeguarding governmental order.

The regimes manage the bilateral relations while maneuvering impressively between areas of contention and while finding points of delicate balance for mitigating possible tensions. China successfully implements its traditional Middle Eastern policy (“getting along with everyone”), conducting parallel but separate relationships with Iran and with Tehran’s sworn enemies, Saudi Arabia and Israel. China’s support for Russia and the Assad regime in Syria is diametrically opposed to Saudi positions; Beijing has also called for an end to the fighting in Yemen, while avoiding substantive criticism of the kingdom’s fighting there. For its part, Saudi Arabia has deepened its economic relations with China, without damaging its trade relations with the United States, let alone its security and political relations with Washington. To a great extent, this maneuvering was successful because China has consistently refrained from explicit declaration of a concrete regional policy, from taking clear sides on points of contention or expressly supporting sides to conflicts, and from public wrangling – this within the scope of a policy replete with internal contradictions that coexist harmoniously in ambiguity.

SnyderTalk Comment:

China is one of the nations that I have labeled TRIC countries: Turkey, Russia, Iran, and China.  Expect all of them to play an increasingly important part in global affairs in the days ahead.

The day is coming when the vast majority of Americans will be thrilled that Donald Trump is president.

Switching Gears

The pompous, high-minded among us—the so-called “intellectual elite” and “liberal progressives”—won’t like this: “Six of the seven countries on Trump’s list also ban visitors based on nationality”.

Awhile back, Katie and I took our daughters to Spain for a visit.  While we in Gibraltar, we thought about going to Morocco for a day trip.  Nothing doing.  We were told that Morocco wouldn’t let us in because we had Israeli stamps in our passports.

You can see Morocco from the top of the Rock of Gibraltar.  It’s less than 8 nautical miles across the Strait of Gibraltar, but we couldn’t go there because we had visited Israel.  There are many other countries that won’t allow people with Israeli stamps in their passports to enter.  I think all of them are Muslim majority countries.

To avoid this problem, Israel no longer stamps passports.  Long ago, I decided that I didn’t want to visit a country that would deny me entry because of an Israeli stamp in my passport, so I asked the people in Israel to stamp my passport instead of giving me a paper visa.  They wouldn’t do it.

There is a lot that people don’t know.  Those who think they are on high moral ground, the “liberal progressive” “intellectual elite”, are actually standing on quicksand.

Talking about “high moral ground”, what about this one: “Erdogan tells off Merkel for using phrase ‘Islamist terrorism”.

Much too late, I think, German Chancellor Angela Merkel realizes that her steadfast stupidity where Islamists are concerned is about to cost her the chancellor’s job.  Boldly, she finally referred to Islamist terrorists correctly, and Turkish President Erdogan “told her off”.

This is what Erdogan said:

“This expression ‘Islamist terror’ seriously saddens us Muslims.  Such an expression is not correct because Islam and terror cannot be associated. The meaning of Islam is peace…Please let’s not use it. As long as it is used we need to stand against it. As a Muslim president personally I cannot accept that.”

“Islam and terror cannot be associated.”  Really?

Thanks to political correctness, Erdogan expects people to believe that lie despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary.  The sad part is that lots of seemingly intelligent people have bought that line of manure.

Those lies are being exposed to the light of day.  Islamist terrorism is the greatest threat to peace and prosperity in the world today.  Ignorant fools may fall into line behind idiots like Erdogan and Obama, but increasingly thinking people won’t.

Soon enough, most people will understand why Obama and Erdogan were buddies. President Trump is not like them.  HalleluYah!

“If My people who are called by My Name humble themselves and pray and seek My face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, will forgive their sin and will heal their land.” (2 Chronicles 7: 14)

Change that Yahweh calls “good” begins in the hearts of believers—people who are recognizable because they are different.

We are different because we belong to Him and are called by His Name.  We are Yahweh’s people, His followers.
