Jeremy Diamond and Hilary Krieger—What’s in that Iran bill and why all the fuss about it?:

For months, the White House and Congress have wrangled over a bill that would give lawmakers a greater say in the Iran nuclear deal the administration is hammering out along with other world powers.

And now, less than two weeks after a framework agreement with Tehran was reached, the Senate Foreign Relations Committee is planning to take up the measure.

On Tuesday, the committee will consider amendments to Tennessee Republican Sen. Bob Corker’s Iran Nuclear Agreement Review Act before deciding whether to have the full Senate vote on it.

For many in Congress, it’s a very simple premise: Congress should weigh in on the terms of a final nuclear deal with Iran.

But for the White House, and some Democrats in Congress, that’s an explosive idea that could derail the talks — and therefore must be stopped.

So what’s in the bill?

Supporters of the legislation have emphasized that it would allow Congress to give a thumbs up or down on the deal President Barack Obama is aiming to finalize with Iran by the negotiations’ June 30 deadline. Backers think that’s only fair since the United States is contemplating a major nuclear pact with a decadeslong enemy.

SnyderTalk Comment:  See below:

As the discussion surrounding the Iran deal develops, we need to pay careful attention to the actions of Arab countries in the Middle East, especially Saudi Arabia.

Israel and Saudi Arabia are the canaries in the coal mine.  Their leaders see what’s coming.  Obama doesn’t, or maybe he does, and he likes what he sees.

Ben Cohen: Sanitizing Iran, Demonizing Israel— As expected, the Obama administration is having a hard time selling the American public on the feeble understanding—it’s not a “deal,” since nothing was signed—that was recently reached with Iran over its nuclear program. Let’s start with President Barack Obama himself. Interviewed by Thomas Friedman of the New York Times after the understanding was announced, Obama was confident and buoyant, declaring that there was no formula “more effective than the diplomatic initiative and framework that we put forward” when it comes to preventing Tehran from developing a nuclear weapon.

Steven Mufson and Greg Jaffe: Iran Likely to Act More Aggressively after a Nuclear Deal—President Obama has repeatedly voiced the hope that an Iran free of sanctions and open to Western investment would change, spending more money on improving living standards and less on destabilizing proxy militias and terrorist groups. Yet some critics doubt that will be the case. “It’s an authoritarian regime,” said Tamara Cofman Wittes, a former top Obama administration State Department official and director of the Center for Middle East Policy at the Brookings Institution. “It has never focused on its people and sanctions relief won’t change it….It is much more likely that Iran will react to a nuclear deal by acting more aggressively in other domains.”

Kristina Wong: Five Key Demands U.S. Dropped in Iran Talks—Before talks began, the Obama administration and the UN Security Council called for Iran to stop all uranium enrichment. The framework agreement allows Iran to continue enriching uranium. The U.S. initially called for limiting the number of Iranian centrifuges used to enrich uranium to 500 to 1,500. The agreement allows Iran 6,104 centrifuges. President Obama said in December 2013 that Iran had no need for the underground nuclear enrichment facility at Fordow and the heavy water reactor at Arak. Both will remain in operation. U.S. negotiators also dropped demands that Iran restrict development of ballistic missiles that could be used to deliver warheads. Initially the U.S. pushed for a deal that would last over 20 years. However, the framework would see the deal’s key terms sunset in 10 to 15 years.

Dror Eydar: The Waxman parable— On Monday evening, I spoke with a veteran media personality. He said that since the election, he has heard about more and more cases of people who left the Likud, voted for the Zionist Union and now regret their choice. They are having a hard time with the empty condescension. Apparently actress Anat Waxman said something, so what? She is not an important cultural figure; she said what she said (demeaning and racist comments against rightist voters) into news broadcaster Danny Kushmaro’s microphone in frustration and anger; she did not get the chocolate promised to her in the election, and so she cursed the situation. And yet, precisely because of her unimportance, her comments matter. In cultural studies, when one is asked to observe a phenomenon — for example, to determine the roots of what has influenced it — it’s best to turn to the artistic margins of the period. To the epigones, the mimics who were influenced by the important artists. There, you can find the boundaries, the influences, the styles stolen without notice.

SnyderTalk Comment: The political left in Israel is in freefall.  The political left in the U.S. is afraid that they are about to experience the same fate.  The political left in Europe is in shambles.

In one sense, that’s good because the left has been at the root of the political problems we face in the world right now.  But, on the other hand, the radical right is just as dangerous as the radical left

The political left’s excesses opened the door for their archenemy on the right.  We know from experience what that means for Jewish people, and it’s not pretty.

Sam Dagher: Middle East Christians Trapped by Islamist Extremists Forge Alliances With Former Foes— Three decades ago, plainclothes Syrian agents went door to door in this border village seeking out young Christian men, who were abducted and killed in a notorious chapter of Lebanon’s 15-year civil war. The village’s nearly 2,000 Christians now find themselves siding with the same Syrian regime they blame for what many call the 1978 massacre. That is because a few miles away, hundreds of Islamist extremists tied to al Qaeda and Islamic State stalk the porous border region separating Lebanon and Syria. Standing between the militants and the village are Lebanese troops aided by the Iran-backed Lebanese Shiite militia Hezbollah, whose men are also fighting for Syrian PresidentBashar al-Assad. “Yes, I prefer the Syrian regime over these terrorist groups,” a 45-year-old Al-Qaa resident said, but it is a choice “between the bitter and more bitter.”

Ephraim Kam: The Demand for Iranian Recognition of Israel— Following the April 2, 2015 statement formulated by the P5+1 and Iran on parameters toward a comprehensive agreement on the Iranian nuclear program, the Israeli government announced its demand that the final agreement include Iran’s recognition of Israel. President Obama was quick to reject the condition, arguing that it amounts to Israel’s demand that no agreement be signed unless Iran undertakes a comprehensive reform of its regime. Nonetheless, this does not mean that there was no point in Israel raising the issue. On the contrary, correct diplomacy can and must stress the connection between the radical fundamentalist regime in Iran, with its public calls for the destruction of the State of Israel, and Iran’s possession of nuclear weapons, which would spell the most severe threat to Israel’s security.

Michael Curtis: The French Paradox and the Jews—The death in Paris on April 8, 2015 of Jean-Louis Crémieux-Brilhac, historian and member of the French resistance in World War II, has reawakened the controversy of what has been termed “the French paradox.” Although 76,000 Jews were deported from France to their death, how was it that 75% of Jews in France during the war managed to survive death at the hands of the inhumane Nazi regime, while only 20% in the Netherlands, and 55% in Belgium were able to do so? France, in both the Occupied Zone controlled by Nazi Germany and the Unoccupied Zone run by the Vichy regime, experienced various levels and stages of persecution, resistance, and rescue. The regime was implicated by its own volition, not by Nazi coercion, in the Holocaust. Memories of that history are leading French leaders, despite problems, to present action to prevent persecution of its Jewish population.

Peter Martino: Top British Universities Flunk Free Speech— At Manchester University in April of 2010, Israel’s deputy ambassador to the UK, Talya Lador-Fresher, was violently attacked. Demonstrators climbed the hood of her car and attempted to smash the windscreen before the police were able to escort her to safety. Again, in February of 2013, this time at the University of Essex in Colchester, Britain, during a debate on the situation in the Middle East, authorities ordered the evacuation from campus of her successor, Israel’s deputy ambassador to the UK, Alon Roth-Snir. A group of hostile students disrupted the debate; university authorities said they could not protect his safety.

Burak Bekdil: Turkey and Iran: Theater of Make Believe— Time passes quickly; but most scripts at the political musicals of the Middle Eastern theaters remain stubbornly unchanged. The (neo-) Ottoman-Persian theater looks exceptional at deception, self-deception, counter-deception, attempted deception and failed deception: At least the Saudis and Iranians do not embrace and kiss each other while fighting several proxy wars in different theaters of the Middle East. The complication on the Turkish-Iranian axis has several reasons, none of which is easily comprehensible to the Western mind: Turkey’s Sunni Islamists believe that they can always fool their Shiite Iranian “brothers” by smiling to their faces, by standing by them against the Christendom, and by championing the Palestinian cause — while playing games behind their backs. In return, the Iranians privately smile and think that the not-so-smart Turks are just trying to play backgammon while they, meanwhile, calculate gambit after gambit on a chessboard.

Zvi Magen and Sarah Fainberg: Toward a New Russian Initiative on the Israeli-Palestinian Issue?— The significance of this week’s visit to Moscow by PA President Mahmoud Abbas should be assessed in the context of Russia’s increasing effort to influence the Israeli-Palestinian political process. This particular effort appears well-suited to Russia’s new Middle East policy, reflected in the decision, announced on April 13, 2015, to supply the S-300 missile system to Iran. • Over the years, it has appeared that Russia was willing to accept participation in the Israeli-Palestinian political process through the Quartet, because its very membership in this forum puts it on equal footing with the US and the European Union. Recently, however, it appears that as part of a wider effort to expand its geopolitical interests, Russia has sensed an opportunity to play a more active role in the political process than in the past. Cooler relations between Israel and the US, while complicating prospects for negotiations, open the door for greater and more tangible Russian influence on the political process. For this reason, an active Russian attempt to jumpstart the negotiations between Israel and the Palestinians cannot be ruled out.

David Daoud: Iran Massively Ramping Up Arming of Hezbollah in Preparation for Major Assault on Israel— Senior Israeli officials warned on Monday evening that, over the last few weeks, Iran has considerably stepped up its operations to arm Hezbollah in order to prepare its terrorist proxy for a large-scale conflict with Israel. According to the officials, cited by Israel’s Channel 2, new intelligence has revealed that Tehran has accelerated its proxy war with Israel on all fronts. Iranian delegations have been arriving in the Gaza Strip, and in recent months, the commander of Iran’s Basij paramilitary volunteer militia spoke of arming the residents of the West Bank to rise up against Israel. Iran has reportedly already begun arming members of Hamas in the West Bank. Iran has also been attempting to establish a new front for Hezbollah with Israel on the Golan Heights, linking it to the existing one in southern Lebanon, according to the report.

SnyderTalk Comment: Watch the video below.  Hezbollah is begging for Iranian intervention in another war with Israel.  Israel is preparing for war.  It could start at any moment.

SnyderTalk Comment: This is Nasrallah’s plea for assistance.  Will he get it, and if so, who will join him?

Iran is sure to help either directly or indirectly.  Direct Iranian involvement in a war with Israel is unlikely since the Iran Deal is front-and-center in the headlines, but indirect involvement such as supplying arms is a certainty.  That’s happening already.

4--Scripture of the Day Yahweh

Exodus 6

1 Then Yahweh said to Moses, “Now you shall see what I will do to Pharaoh; for under compulsion he will let them go, and under compulsion he will drive them out of his land.” 2 God spoke further to Moses and said to him, “I am Yahweh; 3 and I appeared to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, as God Almighty, but by My name, Yahweh, I did not make Myself known to them. 4 I also established My covenant with them, to give them the land of Canaan, the land in which they sojourned. 5 Furthermore I have heard the groaning of the sons of Israel, because the Egyptians are holding them in bondage, and I have remembered My covenant. 6 Say, therefore, to the sons of Israel, ‘I am Yahweh, and I will bring you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians, and I will deliver you from their bondage. I will also redeem you with an outstretched arm and with great judgments. 7 Then I will take you for My people, and I will be your God; and you shall know that I am Yahweh your God, who brought you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians. 8 I will bring you to the land which I swore to give to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, and I will give it to you for a possession; I am Yahweh.’” 9 So Moses spoke thus to the sons of Israel, but they did not listen to Moses on account of their despondency and cruel bondage.

SnyderTalk Comment: Read His Name is Yahweh.

These verses are among the most important in the Bible.  Verses 6-8 are especially important:

6 Say, therefore, to the sons of Israel, ‘I am Yahweh, and I will bring you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians, and I will deliver you from their bondage. I will also redeem you with an outstretched arm and with great judgments. 7 Then I will take you for My people, and I will be your God; and you shall know that I am Yahweh your God, who brought you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians. 8 I will bring you to the land which I swore to give to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, and I will give it to you for a possession; I am Yahweh.’”

That is about as clear as it gets.  Yahweh identifies Himself by Name, the Name that He told us to remember Him by forever.  He also made clear that the Promised Land belongs to Abraham’s descendants through Isaac and Jacob/Israel.

Nothing has changed.  His Name is still Yahweh and the Promised Lands still belongs to the Children of Israel.

14--Blessings from Revelation 2

Blessings in the Book of Revelation is a book that you need to read, especially now.  There are blessings throughout the Scriptures but Revelation is the only book in the Bible actually containing a specific blessing for reading it. It’s repeated twice, once at the beginning and again at the end. This is the reason that I believe Revelation should be the first step toward studying biblical prophecy. Though not easy to do, Revelation can be broken down and understood by anyone, not just the academic elite. So, Revelation’s blessings are for everyone.  Click here to order the eBook.  Click here to order the paperback.
