Fareed Zakaria—Making things worse in the Middle East:

Over the past few months, the Middle East has become an even more violent place than usual. Iraq is now once again home to one of the most bloody civil wars in the world, after Syria of course, which is the worst. Watching these horrors unfold, many in the United States are convinced that this is Washington’s fault or that, at the very least, the Obama administration’s “passive” approach toward the region has allowed instability to build. In fact, the last thing the region needs is more U.S. intervention.

The Middle East is in the midst of a sectarian struggle, like those between Catholics and Protestants in Europe in the age of the Reformation. These tensions are rooted in history and politics and will not easily go away.

Michael Doran and Max Boot: Obama’s Losing Bet on Iran— A great deal of diplomatic attention over the next few months will be focused on whether the temporary nuclear deal with Iran can be transformed into a full-blown accord. President Obama has staked the success of his foreign policy on this bold gamble. But discussion about the nuclear deal has diverted attention from an even riskier bet that Obama has placed: the idea that Iran can become a cooperative partner in regional security. Although they won’t say so publicly, Mr. Obama and Secretary of State John Kerry surely dream of a “Nixon to China” masterstroke. They are quietly pursuing a strategic realignment that, they believe, will end decades of semi-open warfare between Iran and the United States and their respective allies. In our view, the Obama administration wants to see in its place a “concert” of great powers — Russia, America, the European nations and Iran — working together to stabilize the Middle East as in the 19th century, when the “Concert of Europe” worked together to stabilize that Continent.

Christine Williams: “Let’s Burn the Jew” is not Anti-Semitic?— Anti-semitism sank to a new low in Canada after a Winnipeg judge ruled that grabbing a Jewish classmate, flicking a lighter to her hair and saying, “Let’s burn the Jew,” was not anti-Semitic. The incident took place between two fifteen-year-old classmates, where the defendant pleaded guilty to assault with a weapon. The lawyer for the defendant implied that it was the girl’s fault that her hair caught fire — because she pulled away. Then Manitoba Provincial Court Judge Robert Finlayson agreed with the defense that the action was one of teen impulsiveness. The victim not only stated that the incident “changed her world upside down,” but that she needed therapy to deal with her fears and felt that she was blamed by some people in the school for making too much out of the incident. Friends of Simon Wiesenthal Center in Canada expressed horror at Finlayson’s ruling. In a press release, CEO Avi Benlolo stated that he could not imagine “the same decision would have been rendered had the perpetrator targeted any other minority group in a similar way.”

Victor Davis Hanson: The Israel Double Standard— An obscure academic organization called the American Studies Association not long ago voted to endorse a resolution calling for a boycott of Israeli universities. The self-appointed moralists were purportedly outraged over the Israeli government’s treatment of Palestinians. Given academia’s past obsessions with the Jewish state, the targeting of Israel is not new. Yet why do the professors focus on Israel and not Saudi Arabia, which denies women the right to drive and only recently granted them the right to vote? Why not Russia, which has been accused of suppressing free speech, or Nigeria, which has passed retrograde anti-homosexual legislation?

Soeren Kern: European Court Undermining British Sovereignty— The new president of the ECHR, Judge Dean Spielmann, threatened in June 2013 that if Britain did not adhere to European human rights laws, it could face being ejected from the European Union altogether. Britain’s Lord Judge told the BBC that Judge Spielmann was claiming too much power for a body of unelected judges whose rulings could not be challenged. “This is a court which is not answerable to anybody,” he said. “My own view is: stop here.” “The process by which democracies decline is…subtle… What happens is that they are slowly drained of what makes them democratic, by a process of internal decay and mounting indifference….” — Supreme Court Justice Lord Sumption

Abigail R. Esman: In Turkey, Terror Probe Infuriates Prime Minister—On Tuesday, two senior al-Qaida leaders were arrested in Kilis Province, Turkey during a large-scale counterterrorism sweep by Turkish police. The arrests, conducted alongside a raid on the Van province offices of the Humanitarian Relief Foundation (known as IHH), took place less than six months after Turkey partnered with the United States to develop a specialized counter-terrorism program aimed at reducing Islamic radicalism in the Middle East. Well done, you say? Not so fast.

Melanie Phillips: Iran Goads the Gullible West—One of the more notable characteristics of what we must surely call the world jihadi community is how proud – indeed, positively boastful – they are about their murderous intent. That’s presumably because they really do believe they are fulfilling a sacred mission.  From Gaza to Mogadishu, from Ramallah to Tehran, those bent on holy war repeatedly announce their support for and encouragement of the defeat of the west, the murder of Jews and the destruction of Israel. Much, but by no means all, of this incendiary rhetoric is delivered in Arabic. Statements in English often comprise the emollient phrases of compromise and moderation which are a mandatory precondition of jihadi participation in talks with the west, and which accordingly are carefully crafted to exploit the fathomless gullibility of the cultural-suicide crowd.

Lt. Col. (ret.) Michael Segall: The Internal Iranian Struggle in the Aftermath of the Geneva Nuclear Agreement—The Geneva nuclear agreement between Iran and the P5+1 has become a focus of growing domestic controversy in Iran between the conservatives and Revolutionary Guard on one side, and President Hassan Rouhani, the nuclear negotiating team, and those considered the reformist camp on the other. Optimism on a possible improvement of U.S.-Iranian relations is gradually giving way to the anti-American discourse that Khamenei and the Revolutionary Guard promote. At the same time, the regime’s security establishment, particularly the Revolutionary Guard and the Intelligence Ministry, are continuing a crackdown on the opposition and social networks, making clear that they will do whatever is necessary to protect Iran’s revolutionary Islamic nature. In the short time Rouhani has been in office, the Revolutionary Guard commanders have had considerable success in constraining his hesitant efforts toward a domestic transformation, while repeatedly warning that they will not accept the use of the nuclear agreement to facilitate far-reaching domestic, regional, and international changes (mainly toward the U.S.) that would divert Iran from the path they have ordained for it.

Dror Eydar: Why the uproar?— 1. What was the uproar in the media this week all about? Was it about the statements of Defense Minister Moshe Ya’alon, or about the description of John Kerry as “acting out of misplaced obsession and messianic fervor”? Most of the media was busy pointing fingers at Ya’alon. The talks with the Palestinians are a fundamental principle of the catechism of left-wing orthodoxy, and nobody should oppose them or, worse still, accuse the messenger who is forcing an agreement upon us of caring more about his Nobel laurel than about the facts. In revealing the statements made off the record, Yedioth Ahronoth sought to undermine the defense minister’s ability to withstand the enormous pressure the United States has placed on him to surrender to the plan that will mortgage our future.

Jerold Auerbach: Moshe Ya’alon and the Dangers of Truth-Telling— As former Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates and current Israeli Defense Minister Moshe Ya’alon have recently been reminded, honesty in politics can be costly. Gates’s memoir, Duty, recounts the resistance of President Obama to winning wars, especially in Afghanistan. The former Secretary concluded, in a memorable passage: “the president doesn’t trust his commander, . . . doesn’t believe in his own strategy and doesn’t consider the war to be his. For him, it’s all about getting out.” That is not the way to win friends from Obama administration lackeys in Washington or the liberal media.

Jeryl Bier: Kerry: ‘Root Cause of Terrorism’ Is Poverty—“We talked about the common interest of Pope Francis and President Obama in addressing poverty and extreme poverty on a global basis. The United States of America is deeply involved in efforts in Africa and in other parts of the world – in Asia, South Central Asia – to address this poverty, as is the Catholic Church. And so we have a huge common interest in dealing with this issue of poverty, which in many cases is the root cause of terrorism or even the root cause of the disenfranchisement of millions of people on this planet.”

4--Scripture of the Day Yahweh

Zephaniah 2: 1-3

Gather yourselves together, yes, gather, O nation without shame, before the decree takes effect—the day passes like the chaff—before the burning anger of Yahweh comes upon you, before the day of Yahweh’s anger comes upon you. Seek Yahweh, all you humble of the earth who have carried out His ordinances; seek righteousness, seek humility. Perhaps you will be hidden in the day of Yahweh’s anger.

14--Blessings from Revelation 2

Blessings in the Book of Revelation is a book that you need to read, especially now.  There are blessings throughout the Scriptures but Revelation is the only book in the Bible actually containing a specific blessing for reading it. It’s repeated twice, once at the beginning and again at the end. This is the reason that I believe Revelation should be the first step toward studying biblical prophecy. Though not easy to do, Revelation can be broken down and understood by anyone, not just the academic elite. So, Revelation’s blessings are for everyone.  Click here to order the eBook.  Click here to order the paperback.
