Isaiah 45: 18-20—“For thus says Yahweh, who created the heavens (He is the God who formed the earth and made it, He established it and did not create it a waste place, but formed it to be inhabited), ‘I am Yahweh, and there is none else. I have not spoken in secret, in some dark land; I did not say to the offspring of Jacob, ‘Seek Me in a waste place’; I, Yahweh, speak righteousness, declaring things that are upright. Gather yourselves and come; draw near together, you fugitives of the nations; they have no knowledge, who carry about their wooden idol and pray to a god who cannot save.”

Shalu shalom Yerushalayim: Pray for the peace of Jerusalem. (Psalm 122: 6)

Scripture of the day:

SnyderTalk Commentary: The toughest times any president has ever faced?  Someone should send them some history books.  The Obama groupies are legends in their own minds.  Thankfully, the mid-term election is one month away.

“At entrances to settlements throughout Judea and Samaria one can see signs inviting the residents to join Likud. ‘You’ll decide, you’ll determine,’ they read. ‘Join Likud – determine our future.’”

“Every year over 10,000 Jewish post-high school students from all over the world make their way to Israel to spend ten months learning, volunteering or simply taking in the country’s beautiful landscapes. In most cases, these 18- and 19-year-olds will then return to wherever it is in the world that they came from, begin college or university and start their lives anew. For most people, this ‘gap year’ between high school and post-high school studies is truly crucial for developing as an adult and for gaining a sense of Jewish identity. If one were to ask one of these students how his year in Israel was, the response would most likely be along the lines of, ‘Amazing, I miss it so much!’”

#####

“The Middle East is packed with the military forces of states and organizations. They are all preparing to kill and prevent killing. Only one force, the size of a brigade, numbering 1,662 officers and soldiers, is there for a single practical purpose – wearily waiting for a man to die.”

#####

“Many years ago a Chasid used to travel from shtetl to shtetl selling holy books. On one occasion he came to a wealthy land owner and asked if he would like to purchase a book of Torah teachings. The banker agreed and not only purchased the book, but paid for it with a hundred ruble note. He then began to chat with the Chassid and offered him a cigar, taking one also for himself. The Chassid noticed that the banker proceeded to rip a page from the holy book he had just bought and holding it to the open flame on the stove, used the page to light his cigar. The Chassid said not a word but simply drew out from his pocket the 100 ruble note he had just received from the banker, held it over the stove as well and used it to light his cigar.”

“Parents of the 216 students in Washington, D.C. who have seen Mr. Obama’s congressional cohorts gut the Opportunity Scholarship program must have found cold comfort from the President’s soothing words on NBC. The Heritage Foundation’s able education analyst Lindsey Burke tells us what Mr. Obama said to The Today Show’s Matt Lauer.”

#####

“Income inequality, we learn from the Census Bureau, has reached the highest level since data were first collected on the subject in 1967. Poverty has increased dramatically, with one of seven Americans now falling below the poverty threshold.”

#####

“Between the success of President Obama’s education reform initiative Race to the Top and the adulation being poured on the pro-education reform documentary Waiting for ‘Superman’– including appearances on ‘Oprah’ and ‘Good Morning America,’ as well as fawning articles in magazines and newspapers across the country – one would be forgiven for thinking that teachers unions have lost their political clout.”

#####

“Members of Congress have now returned home to try to save their own jobs, never mind helping the millions of Americans who have lost theirs. ‘When we come back this fall, the election will be over,’ Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid told the Washington Post. ‘I hope that it also means that Republicans will finally be able to put the American people ahead of their short-term political interests and ambitions.’”

#####

“Conservatives who love to hate moviemaker Oliver Stone, who has never found a particular reason to love America, won’t find enough venom to abet their passion against him for his latest movie, ‘Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps.’”

#####

“Let’s analyze the midterm election landscape within college football’s Big Ten conference—a region that may hold the key to potential Republican takeovers of the houses of Congress. Yesterday, we covered Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, and Michigan.  Today, the remaining five states.”

#####

“As a Jew, I’m often asked why my fellow tribesmen are so predictably left-wing. And because we Jews are in constant telepathic contact, I can answer the question. For Jews, liberalism isn’t an ideological choice; it’s a spiritual stand-in. The religion of the average American Jew is liberalism.”

#####

“Hey, kids? If your secret weapon is The One cracking Slurpee jokes in purple districts, trust me — you assuredly can forget about independents.  Remember, this is a guy whose brand is so tainted that his endorsement is now a liability in his own home state, whose performance in Wisconsin that the Democrats seem so impressed with was part of a seven-minute goof yesterday about what a disappointment he is on the left’s most beloved nightly comedy show.”

#####

“Two new spots here. The second is a remake of — and vast improvement upon — this train wreck, cutting the running time by two thirds and employing a lighter touch to make the write-in lesson seem less pedantic. The first is the buzz worthy one, though, basically accusing Joe Miller of being a prop of those highfalutin California city slickers in the tea party. Quickie fact check: Miller was born in Kansas and moved to Alaska 16 years ago because the thought of working in a big east coast law firm wasn’t as enticing as living in the great outdoors. For fun, he hunts elk with his eight kids. And he is, of course, famously more conservative than she is, a trait not often associated with California. This is the guy whom Murky would have you believe is set to deliver Alaska’s precious Senate seat into the hands of Beverly Hills or whatever. Unbelievable.”

#####

“As Ace says, this is interesting chiefly as a pre-mortem for a midterm wipeout. It’s going to be bad and everyone knows it, so there’s no sense waiting around to put the blame where it belongs. Say this for Stewart: Unlike some Democrats, he’s not in denial about what election day will look like.”

#####

“My friends at the Institute for Justice have a new project, Protecting Citizen Speech, which defends the First Amendment from government encroachment by politicians looking to protect their incumbencies, and not just on the federal level.  As IJ notes, states impose campaign-finance laws that restrict freedom of speech and association in even more egregious ways than attempted through McCain-Feingold, and are in some ways more difficult to fight.  While some laws attempt to rely more on transparency than restrictions, IJ argues that even those laws result in limitations of political action.”

#####

“Capitol Hill veteran Pete Rouse has emerged as the clear favorite to become temporary chief of staff if Rahm Emanuel leaves the White House as expected.”

#####

“Sunday’s parliamentary election in Venezuela saw Chávez’s governing United Socialist Party of Venezuela slump to a landslide. Chavistas walked off with 59 percent of the seats in Venezuela’s single-chamber National Assembly on the back of just 48 percent of the vote, all thanks to a well-known list of unfair voting conditions that left the playing field far from level: an aggressively gerrymandered map, massive rural overrepresentation, and blatantly biased election rules approved by a blatantly biased Elections Commission.”

#####

“‘Many state and local governments have made the mistake of courting the votes of public employees by fattening salaries and benefits, all the time imagining that pension-fund investments could only go up,’ the tirade warns us. With tales of ‘lavish retirements for relatively youthful public servants’ illustrating the ‘ugly…issue of public-employee pay and benefits,’ the jeremiad estimated that state governments are anywhere from $1 trillion to $3 trillion short of their public pension commitments.”

#####

“With the November election just around the corner, President Obama spent the past two days hanging in middle-class folks’ backyards in Albuquerque, Des Moines and Richmond to discuss the state of the economy. But it could be the American people are pretty well talked out on the economy. Rather than talk, it looks as if they are about to repudiate a formerly popular president who has disappointed them, throw over a Democratic Party they think has failed them, and hand power to a Republican Party they don’t trust.”

#####

“Reid’s action is an insult to women. Does he really believe that women are underpaid? If so, why wait until the evening the Senate adjourns after a two-year session to file cloture? If not, this is just a sop to his Nevada union base.”

#####

“Earlier this week, Rolling Stone published an extensive interview with President Obama in which the commander in chief went after his Republican opponents with notable venom. The interview sadly confirms what many of us have long known: President Obama’s transformation from post-partisan healer to hyper-partisan attack dog is complete. Why has this happened? Certainly, even those most skeptical of President Obama in January 2009 would have been a little surprised to read an interview that drips with contempt for so many of the president’s fellow citizens. Was President Obama always like this, and just hid his partisan side very well during the campaign, or is this a new attitude?”

#####

“President Obama’s urgent call for Congress to immediately extend tax breaks for the middle class was supposed to create a defining Democratic issue and cast Republicans as defenders of the rich on the eve of crucial midterm elections. Now, three weeks later, Democrats are further divided and Republicans are using the tax cut issue to their advantage.”

“Bielat is 35 years old, a Marine who spent four years on active duty and is now a major in the Reserve. He’s a graduate of Georgetown University with a master’s from Harvard and an MBA from Wharton. He’s devoted a good portion of his professional life to manufacturing the high-tech robots that defuse improvised explosive devices in Iraq and Afghanistan. In other words, he’s a serious man.”

A Jewish man was arrested for praying on the Temple Mount.

Talk about a double standard.  This is it.  Muslims are free to pray on the Temple Mount, and they even use it as a platform from which to hurl rocks at pious Jews and Christians who pray at the Kotel (i.e., the Western Wall).

This kind of nonsense has got to stop.  The Israeli government may not be able or willing to deal with the problem, but Yahweh can handle it.  In due course, He will.
