We may be coming out of the Great Recession, but that hasn’t stopped our president from taking time off—and lots of it.


For fun, I decided to google “President Obama returns from vacation” and find out how many vacations he’s taken since he became President of the United States about 20 months ago.  It sounded simple, but it wasn’t.  There are more than 6,000,000 results on Google for that entry so I decided to limit my search to the last 9 months.  Below is a sample of what I found:

I know this list isn’t exhaustive, but candidly, I didn’t have enough time to study the matter any further.  Also, I included Michelle Obama’s luxury excursion to Spain since it generated so much controversy about the number of vacations she and her husband have taken since he became president.  Be that as it may, this list is formidable.

By my count, which I know is based on less than complete data, President Obama has taken at least 7 vacations since December 2009.  That’s at least a vacation every 34 days not counting Michelle’s lavish trip to the Iberian Peninsula.  According to reports, he took 3 vacations in his first month in office.  That kind of benefits package makes even unionized auto workers jealous.

Next, I decided to find out how many rounds of golf the president has played since taking office.  There are more than 43,000,000 results for that question, and I had neither the time nor the desire to search out an accurate answer.  I did run across this tidbit though.  In his first 11 months in office, President Obama played 25 rounds of golf.  That’s more golf than President Bush played in his 8 years in office.  That’s more golf than I’ve played in the 6 years I’ve been retired.  I know the president likes to play basketball too, but after looking into his vacations and golf outings, I didn’t have the courage to investigate his court time.

We may be coming out of the Great Recession, but that hasn’t stopped our president from taking time off—and lots of it.  Keep that in mind the next time you hear President Obama say how hard he is working for us.  The facts just don’t line up behind that claim.
