Isaiah 33: 14-16—“Sinners in Zion are terrified; trembling has seized the godless. Who among us can live with the consuming fire? Who among us can live with continual burning? He who walks righteously and speaks with sincerity, he who rejects unjust gain and shakes his hands so that they hold no bribe; he who stops his ears from hearing about bloodshed and shuts his eyes from looking upon evil; he will dwell on the heights, his refuge will be the impregnable rock; his bread will be given him, his water will be sure.”

Shalu shalom Yerushalayim: Pray for the peace of Jerusalem. (Psalm 122: 6)

Scripture of the day:

Isaiah 33: 14-16—“Sinners in Zion are terrified; trembling has seized the godless.  Who among us can live with the consuming fire?  Who among us can live with continual burning?  He who walks righteously and speaks with sincerity, he who rejects unjust gain and shakes his hands so that they hold no bribe; he who stops his ears from hearing about bloodshed and shuts his eyes from looking upon evil; he will dwell on the heights, his refuge will be the impregnable rock; his bread will be given him, his water will be sure.”

SnyderTalk Editorial:

The Problem with Time

Albert Einstein was one of the most intelligent people ever to have lived.  He is best known for his work on the theory of relativity—special and general.  As his life was drawing to a close, he reflected on what he had learned and drew an astonishing conclusion.  “Time”, he said, “is a persistent illusion.”

Our perception of time (i.e., past, present, and future) is flawed.  Our human limitations prevent us from seeing time correctly.  Einstein knew that space and time are combined.  That enabled him to understand relationships that he couldn’t have grasped any other way.  It’s called the spacetime continuum.

Here is a question for you.  Assume that your grandfather died in 1979 and that your father died in 2005.  Which one of them got to heaven first?  The answer may surprise you.  They both got to heaven at the same time.  This will surprise you even more.  If you die in 2045, the three of you will arrive at the Pearly Gate together—along with John the Baptist, Christopher Columbus, Alexander the Great, and every other person who has walked the planet.

Yahweh doesn’t suffer from human limitations that plague us.  The Bible tells us that He is omniscient.  That means He sees the past, present, and future simultaneously.  Yahweh doesn’t “predict” the future.  He explains it.  Yahweh doesn’t guess what we might do in a specific situation.  He sees us doing it before it happens.

The only way we can “know” for sure what the future holds is if Yahweh tells us.  For instance, we know that Yahweh will return.  We also know that there will be signs of His coming.  We call it the End of Days or Times of the End or something like that.  The Bible even gives us things to look for, but the Messiah was very clear about this fact.  Only Yahweh knows when the curtain will come down.

Today many people are telling us that they know exactly where we are on Yahweh’s timeline.  They must have missed the part about Yahweh being the only One who has access to that information.  I’m not denying the existence of prophets, but the Bible tells us how to judge them.  Either they are exactly correct in every minute detail, or they are false prophets.

I’ve seen a preacher on television explain the End of Days in such intricate detail that you might think he is a member of the Planning Committee for the Second Coming.  He has charts and graphs and a huge made-for-television display behind him as he waddles across the stage making dramatic gestures that mimic the Mick Jagger prance.  Thousands of people in his congregation are mesmerized by his presentations, but they shouldn’t be.  He’s sharing his opinions, and that’s all.  I wish he would make that clear, but he doesn’t.  I’ll say this for him.  He probably raises a lot of money.

The disciples expected the Messiah’s “swift return”, and they wrote about it in the New Testament.  If you understand the spacetime continuum, you realize that His return will be swift no matter when He returns.

Here are some things we “know”:

  1. There is One God, and His Name is Yahweh.
  2. Yahweh is our Redeemer and our Savior.
  3. Yahweh will not lose any of His people—not even one.
  4. Yahweh will return and deal with His enemies personally.  He will destroy them by simply saying the word.  It will be like the days of creation when He said, “Let there be light; and there was light.”  No physical action is required on His part.
  5. Conflict involving the nation Israel will be center stage when the End of Days arrives.

We know other things too, but that list will suffice.  This is my advice.  Be skeptical of anyone who tells you that he or she knows exactly what Yahweh will do or when He will do it.  If they share their opinions with you, they should be clear about it.  If they are speaking for Yahweh, they should begin this way—“Thus says Yahweh.”  If you hear those words, listen up.  As I said, we know how to judge a prophet.
