Scripture of the day:
Isaiah 32: 14-20—“Because the palace has been abandoned, the populated city forsaken. Hill and watch-tower have become caves forever, a delight for wild donkeys, a pasture for flocks; until the Spirit (Ruach Yahweh) is poured out upon us from on high, and the wilderness becomes a fertile field, and the fertile field is considered as a forest. Then justice will dwell in the wilderness and righteousness will abide in the fertile field. And the work of righteousness will be peace, and the service of righteousness, quietness and confidence forever. Then my people will live in a peaceful habitation, and in secure dwellings and in undisturbed resting places; and it will hail when the forest comes down, and the city will be utterly laid low. How blessed will you be, you who sow beside all waters, who let out freely the ox and the donkey.”

SnyderTalk Commentary: This is a quote from the article above: “Recent statements by the leaders of Iran, Turkey, Syria, Hamas and Hizbullah make clear that the members of the Iranian axis view the Mavi Marmara episode as a strategic victory in their ongoing campaign against Israel. The international stampede against Israel at the UN, the White House and throughout Europe exposed Israel’s Achilles heel. The Mavi Marmara demonstrated that on the one hand the IDF cannot enforce its blockade of Gaza without the use of force. On the other hand, it taught Israel’s enemies that by forcing Israel to use force, Iran, Turkey and their allies incited a UN-EU-US lynch mob against Israel.”
There can be no doubt that Iran, Syria, Turkey, Hamas, and Hezbollah are in cahoots and that they are trying to destroy Israel. Four of the quintet (Iran, Syria, Hamas, and Hezbollah) are blatantly open about their intentions. Turkish PM Erdogan is less transparent.
Turkey has enjoyed good relations with Israel since its inception, and the people of Turkey are generally pro-Israel. I’ve written about that issue in previous SnyderTalk posts so I won’t deal with it here, but it is clear that PM Erdogan has Islamist sympathies. It looks as though he’s trying to position himself as THE modern-day Saladin who can restore Islam’s past glory and the Ottoman Empire. Iran has similar ambitions. Iranian leaders see themselves as THE defenders of the faith, and it appears that they want to restore the Persian Empire.
Although Israel is the quintet’s immediate target, in due course I think they will turn on each other. Iran and Turkey will vie for the leadership spot; Hamas and Hezbollah will compete for the brownshirt position; and Syria will be the odd man out. Under the inept leadership of Bashar al Assad, Syria is heading for trouble. He needs the quintet, but they don’t need him. As quickly as power issues are resolved, I think five things will become apparent:
- Syria has little to offer except a safe haven for terrorists of all stripes.
- Bashar al Assad is an infidel and a dunce, and Syria is ripe for revolution.
- The vast majority of Turks are reasonable people. They won’t tolerate PM Erdogan too much longer. He can’t continue to walk the tightrope between moderate and extremist Muslims. In the end, he will be seen as the mortal enemy of both groups. When that day arrives, he’ll need all the protection he can afford.
- Iran’s leaders have a tenuous hold on power. Eventually, they will be ousted by the freedom loving people of Iran. They know that life in Iran today is worse than it was under the Shah and that the SAVAK was no worse than the religious thugs masquerading as police. When the power of the religious and political elite wanes, there will be no place for them to hide, except Syria.
- Hamas and Hezbollah are bitter rivals. So are the PA, the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, the Al Aqsa Martyrs Brigade, etc., etc., etc.
In the Islamist world, anyone who isn’t radical is an infidel. Typically, we think that Islam refers only to nonbelievers as infidels, but Islamists reserve special, intense hatred for lax believers. They see moderate Muslims as lower than infidels. Clearly, Assad and his ruling Syrian Baathists aren’t “true believers” in their eyes, and most Turks reject the Islamist way of life. Iran’s political situation could come undone at any moment. Iran’s leaders thought they had lost their grip on power a few weeks ago and were preparing to flee the country. (See Guards of the Revolution—Iran.) Hamas and Hezbollah will fight together until it’s time to fight each other. The Palestinian Authority will join that fight as well. So will a host of other Islamist terrorist groups with Palestinian ties.
This is the bottom line. In the end, the quintet is destined to fail, but that doesn’t mean they can’t do a lot of damage in the meantime. My hope and my prayer is that they will turn on each other before they cause more trouble for Israel, but Israel needs to prepare for the worst case scenario.

SnyderTalk Commentary: Turkish PM Erdogan is a hypocrite. He ordered his troops to invade Iraq and kill innocent Kurdish men, women, and children, but he attacked Israel for boarding ships to examine cargo heading for Gaza and Hamas. Does the world notice? Does the world care? Probably not. People of Turkia, please give your prime minister his due.
