Isaiah 30: 31-33—“For at the voice of Yahweh Assyria will be terrified, when He strikes with the rod. And every blow of the rod of punishment, which Yahweh will lay on him, will be with the music of tambourines and lyres; and in battles, brandishing weapons, He will fight them. For Topheth has long been ready, indeed, it has been prepared for the king. He has made it deep and large, a pyre of fire with plenty of wood; the breath of Yahweh, like a torrent of brimstone, sets it afire.”

“For here we are not afraid to follow the truth wherever it may lead, nor to tolerate any error so long as reason is left free to combat it.” (Thomas Jefferson)

Scripture of the day:

Isaiah 30: 31-33—“For at the voice of Yahweh Assyria will be terrified, when He strikes with the rod. And every blow of the rod of punishment, which Yahweh will lay on him, will be with the music of tambourines and lyres; and in battles, brandishing weapons, He will fight them. For Topheth has long been ready, indeed, it has been prepared for the king. He has made it deep and large, a pyre of fire with plenty of wood; the breath of Yahweh, like a torrent of brimstone, sets it afire.”

SnyderTalk Commentary–About Turkey:

Every red-blooded American knows that in 1492 Columbus sailed the ocean blue, but that’s not the only momentous event that occurred in 1492.  That was the year King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella of Spain issued an ultimatum.  They decreed that Jews and Muslims would have to convert to Christianity or leave Spain.  If they didn’t convert and chose to stay, they would face death during the Spanish Inquisition.  Most of the Muslims in Spain were Arabs, so fleeing to North Africa across the Strait of Gibraltar was simple and easy.  The trip is less than 8 nautical miles, and they had close family ties in North Africa and the Middle East.

Jews in Spain had no natural home outside Europe to which they could return.  It’s true that there has been a Jewish presence in Israel since Yahweh changed Jacob’s name to Israel, but the Assyrian exile (starting in about 740 B.C.), the Babylonian exile (starting in 597 B.C.), and the Roman exile (starting in 70 A.D.) left only a remnant of the Children of Israel in the Holy Land.  By 1492, the personal connection of Jews in Spain with Israel was nonexistent.  The stories they told about the land of their ancestors dated back from 2,100 years to 1,400 years.  They had no place to go.  Enter Turkey.  Bayezid II, Sultan of the Ottoman Empire, allowed Jews to settle in Ottoman lands, and he even sent ships to Spain to pick them up.  His magnanimous gesture paid handsome dividends.  They brought with them their art, science, and culture.  Their influence on the Ottoman Empire was huge.

The Ottoman Empire lasted from 1299 A.D. to 1922 A.D.  Visit Turkey today and you will quickly see that the Turkish people’s cultural identity with the Ottoman Empire is strong.  That’s as it should be.  Similarly, if you visit Spain today, you will learn that the entire Western Hemisphere, including the United States, is “the New World”, and they set it up.  Spanish people will be more than happy to direct you to the Archivo General de Indias in Seville where the legal documents establishing the New World are kept.  If you visit Spain, be sure to bone up on your Spanish.  Finding a Spaniard who can speak English is very difficult.  Turkey is different.  You can speak with just about anyone you meet in English.  In fact, unless you are well-educated, their English will be better than yours.  They even know our idioms.

Turkey is predominantly Muslim, but it is open to new ideas and very Western thanks to Mustafa Kemal Atatürk.  Unfortunately, most people educated in the United States have never heard of him, but he is without question one of the greatest leaders the world has ever seen.  He led Turkey following the defeat of the Ottoman Empire.  His political, economic, and cultural reforms are the foundations upon which modern Turkey is built.  Saying that Atatürk is revered in Turkey is an understatement.  He is to Turkey what Washington, Jefferson, Madison, and Monroe are to the US, and he did something they didn’t do.  He changed Turkey’s alphabet and its language.

For your information, in the United States we mispronounce the name of the country.  It’s not Turkey.  It’s Turkia.  If you visit Turkey, use the correct name and you’ll see some faces light up.

Saving Jews following Ferdinand’s and Isabella’s 1492 edict is not the only connection between Turkey and people with Judeo-Christian beliefs.  It’s not even the first.  The land we know as Turkey today was the incubator for the fledgling Christian church.  The seven churches mentioned in Revelation (Ephesus, Smyrna, Pergamum, Thyatira, Sardis, Philadelphia, and Laodicea) are located in modern-day Turkey.  The apostle Paul was from Tarsus, a city in the country we call Turkey today, and Mary, the Messiah’s mother, lived in Ephesus during her waning years and is buried there.

Turkey’s rich Judeo-Christian heritage is well-known and appreciated by most Turks.  Below are pictures of Turkia:
