Isaiah 30: 27-30—“Behold, the name of Yahweh comes from a remote place; burning is His anger and dense is His smoke; His lips are filled with indignation and His tongue is like a consuming fire; His breath is like an overflowing torrent, which reaches to the neck, to shake the nations back and forth in a sieve, and to put in the jaws of the peoples the bridle which leads to ruin. You will have songs as in the night when you keep the festival, and gladness of heart as when one marches to the sound of the flute, to go to the mountain of Yahweh, to the Rock of Israel. And Yahweh will cause His voice of authority to be heard, and the descending of His arm to be seen in fierce anger, and in the flame of a consuming fire in cloudburst, downpour and hailstones.”

Scripture of the day:

SnyderTalk Commentary: I believe The Christian Science Monitor article above is correct.  Iran’s Revolutionary Guard wants to escort the new Gaza flotilla because they see Turkey as a threat to Iran’s regional hegemony.  From a strategic perspective, this is an important development.  Without going into great detail, I’ll simply say this.  Competition between Iran and Turkey to determine which country represents Muslims in the Middle East on the world stage will take a lot of pressure off the United States, but it will inevitably lead to even more pressure on Israel.

The US has had very good working relations with Turkey for many years, and Turkey is one of our NATO allies.  There’s no question which side we’ll be on if the emerging struggle between Turkey and Iran develops into a full-scale diplomatic and/or military conflict.  The people of Turkey are generally pro-Western, and there is no denying their commitment to a secular form of government.  PM Erdogan is well aware of this, and he must be very careful not to go too far down the Islamist path.  That said, he must also pay attention to the demands of a minority of his citizens who are sympathetic to the Islamist jihadist philosophy.  He has walked that tightrope long enough to suggest that he knows what he’s doing.

To win the hearts and minds of Muslims in the Middle East—most of whom are Arab Muslims—PM Erdogan must be seen as pro-Palestinian.  That helps to explain his role in the Gaza flotilla and his comments about Israel since the first boarding incident.  He can’t allow Iran to be the voice of Middle Eastern Muslims where Israel is concerned.  Hence, I expect to see him continue to distance Turkey from Israel, at least publically.  That may lead Iran to become even more belligerent toward Israel as a way of showing Arab Muslims that Iran is tougher on Israel than Turkey is.  This means that Israel may become the whipping boy in a regional confrontation between Turkey and Iran.

The Arab nations’ memories of Ottoman rule aren’t as sanguine as PM Erdogan may believe, despite his current favor in those countries.  Similarly, Arab nations are not enthusiastic about a nuclear Iran for many reasons.  As peculiar as this may sound, in due course they may view the US as the ally of choice, but that is just speculation.

There is a great deal more to be said about this subject.  In the days ahead, I’ll delve more deeply into this developing situation, but today I want to begin acquainting you with Turkey.
