The Messiah is the central figure in the Old Testament from Genesis to Malachi. The prophet Nathan promised Israel’s King David a permanent, royal dynasty (2 Samuel 7: 11), and throughout the Scriptures his Descendant—the Anointed One, the Messiah, Ha Mashiach ben David—is referred to as the Suffering Servant and the Eternal King.

“For here we are not afraid to follow the truth wherever it may lead, nor to tolerate any error so long as reason is left free to combat it.” (Thomas Jefferson)

Scripture Quote of the Day:

Isaiah 13: 6-11—“Wail, for the day of Yahweh is near!  It will come as destruction from the Almighty.  Therefore all hands will fall limp, and every man’s heart will melt.  They will be terrified, pains and anguish will take hold of them; they will writhe like a woman in labor, they will look at one another in astonishment, their faces aflame.  Behold, the day of Yahweh is coming, cruel, with fury and burning anger, to make the land a desolation; and He will exterminate its sinners from it.  For the stars of heaven and their constellations will not flash forth their light; the sun will be dark when it rises and the moon will not shed its light.  Thus I will punish the world for its evil and the wicked for their iniquity; I will also put an end to the arrogance of the proud and abase the haughtiness of the ruthless.”

Are You Ready to Accept the Truth?

The Messiah is the central figure in the Old Testament from Genesis to Malachi.  The prophet Nathan promised Israel’s King David a permanent, royal dynasty (2 Samuel 7: 11), and throughout the Scriptures his Descendant—the Anointed One, the Messiah, Ha Mashiach ben David—is referred to as the Suffering Servant and the Eternal King.

Isaiah refers to the Messiah as Immanuel, God who is with us, and Jeremiah calls Him Yahweh Tsidkenu, Yahweh our righteousness.  These two Names sum up the Messiah’s mission in its purest and simplest sense.  Ezekiel presents Him as a Prince, and he describes the Messiah as the Mediator and as the Shepherd of His people. (Ezekiel 34: 23-24 and Ezekiel 37: 24-25)  Zechariah portrays Him as a humble King who returns to rule His dominion. (Zechariah 9: 9-10)

The Messiah appears in many ways in the Scriptures.  For instance, He is Yahweh’s Servant, His Strong Right Arm, an Offshoot of Jessie’s root, the Branch of David, the Son of Man, the Teacher of His people, and the Light to the nations.  He was despised and rejected by His own people, yet He laid down His life for our redemption and salvation.

News Items of Interest:

Commonsense: Reading the articles above reminds me of Yasser Arafat’s stated philosophy:

  1. Since we cannot defeat Israel in war we do this in stages.  We take any and every territory that we can of Palestine, and establish sovereignty there, and we use it as a springboard to take more.  When the time comes, we can get the Arab nations to join us for the final blow against Israel.” (Yasser Arafat speaking on Jordanian television, September 13, 1993—the same day the Oslo Peace Accord ceremony was held in Washington D.C.)
  2. “Peace for us means the destruction of Israel.  We are preparing for an all-out war, a war which will last for generations.  Since January 1965, when Fatah was born, we have become the most dangerous enemy that Israel has….We shall not rest until the day when we return to our home, and until we destroy Israel.” (El Mundo, Caracas, Venezuela, February 11, 1980)

Although Arafat is dead, his beliefs are alive and well in the Middle East.  I’m not a Chicken Little, but the rhetoric coming from Arab Muslim leaders in the Middle East at this moment is alarming.  Their public comments are meant for Western ears, and they suggest several things:

  1. All of them are reading from the same script.  That means they are coordinating their activities.
  2. Even Jordan, a moderate Arab state at “peace” with Israel, is sounding the alarm.  You may think King Abdullah has a deep down, heartfelt love for Israel, but there’s another possibility.  He may be playing by Arafat’s rules.  Arafat was notorious for talking peace with Western leaders and talking war and the destruction of Israel with his fellow Arab Muslims.  Could Abdullah be doing the same thing?  It’s possible.
  3. Arab Muslim leaders think they have a kindred spirit in the White House.  From their point of view, there has never been a better time to strike Israel.  Add to that the belligerence of Iran and you have the cover you need to build a coalition of Arab nations to finally do what many of them have wanted to do since 1948—annihilate Israel.

Are we heading for another war in the Middle East?  Do Arab Muslim leaders see an opportunity to destroy Israel?  Maybe.  Whatever the case may be, don’t be tempted to believe that Yahweh’s promises regarding Israel have changed.  Yahweh’s promises are certain, and He said, “You shall no longer be called Jacob, but Israel shall be your name….I am God Almighty (El Shaddai); be fruitful and multiply; a nation and a company of nations shall come from you, and kings shall come forth from you.  The land which I gave to Abraham and Isaac, I will give it to you, and I will give the land to your descendants after you.” (Genesis 35: 10-12)

You’ll have to decide what you believe.  As for me, I’ll follow Yahweh.
