“Behold, My Servant, whom I uphold; My chosen one in whom My soul delights. I have put My Spirit upon Him; He will bring forth justice to the nations. He will not cry out or raise His voice, nor make His voice heard in the street. A bruised reed He will not break and a dimly burning wick He will not extinguish; He will faithfully bring forth justice. He will not be disheartened or crushed until He has established justice in the earth; and the coastlands will wait expectantly for His law.” (Isaiah 42: 1-4)

“For here we are not afraid to follow the truth wherever it may lead, nor to tolerate any error so long as reason is left free to combat it.”

SnyderTalk® Commentary

Today I want to look at the Old Testament verses quoted in Matthew 12 and 13.

**********

Matt. 12: 7—“But if you had known what this means, ‘I DESIRE COMPASSION, AND NOT A SACRIFICE,’ you would not have condemned the innocent.”

Hosea 6: 6—“For I delight in loyalty rather than sacrifice, and in the knowledge of God rather than burnt offerings.”

**********

Matt. 12: 18-21—“BEHOLD, MY SERVANT WHOM I HAVE CHOSEN; MY BELOVED IN WHOM MY SOUL is WELL-PLEASED; I WILL PUT MY SPIRIT UPON HIM, AND HE SHALL PROCLAIM JUSTICE TO THE GENTILES.  HE WILL NOT QUARREL, NOR CRY OUT; NOR WILL ANYONE HEAR HIS VOICE IN THE STREETS.  A BATTERED REED HE WILL NOT BREAK OFF, AND A SMOLDERING WICK HE WILL NOT PUT OUT, UNTIL HE LEADS JUSTICE TO VICTORY.  AND IN HIS NAME THE GENTILES WILL HOPE.”

Isaiah 42: 1-4—“Behold, My Servant, whom I uphold; My chosen one in whom My soul delights.  I have put My Spirit upon Him; He will bring forth justice to the nations.  He will not cry out or raise His voice, nor make His voice heard in the street.  A bruised reed He will not break and a dimly burning wick He will not extinguish; He will faithfully bring forth justice.  He will not be disheartened or crushed until He has established justice in the earth; and the coastlands will wait expectantly for His law.”

**********

Matt. 13: 14-15—“In their case the prophecy of Isaiah is being fulfilled, which says, ‘YOU WILL KEEP ON HEARING, BUT WILL NOT UNDERSTAND; YOU WILL KEEP ON SEEING, BUT WILL NOT PERCEIVE; FOR THE HEART OF THIS PEOPLE HAS BECOME DULL, WITH THEIR EARS THEY SCARCELY HEAR, AND THEY HAVE CLOSED THEIR EYES,
OTHERWISE THEY WOULD SEE WITH THEIR EYES, HEAR WITH THEIR EARS, AND UNDERSTAND WITH THEIR HEART AND RETURN, AND I WOULD HEAL THEM.’”

Isaiah 6: 9-10—He said, “Go, and tell this people: ‘Keep on listening, but do not perceive; keep on looking, but do not understand. Render the hearts of this people insensitive, their ears dull, and their eyes dim, otherwise they might see with their eyes, hear with their ears, understand with their hearts, and return and be healed.’”

**********

Matt. 13: 35—“This was to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet: ‘I WILL OPEN MY MOUTH IN PARABLES; I WILL UTTER THINGS HIDDEN SINCE THE FOUNDATION OF THE WORLD.’”

Psalm 78: 2—“I will open my mouth in a parable; I will utter dark sayings of old.”

**********

Matt. 13: 43—“Then THE RIGHTEOUS WILL SHINE FORTH AS THE SUN in the kingdom of their Father. He who has ears, let him hear.”

Daniel 12: 3—“Those who have insight will shine brightly like the brightness of the expanse of heaven, and those who lead the many to righteousness, like the stars forever and ever.”

What can we conclude from these verses?

  1. Yahweh desires compassion, not sacrifice.  The perfect sacrifice has already been made.
  2. Isaiah makes it clear that the Messiah is the only hope of His people.  “A dimly burning wick He will not extinguish.”
  3. The people of His generation heard Him, but most of them did not hear.  They actually saw Him, but most of them did not see.  In the end, they rejected Him and crucified Him.  He was dying for their sins, but they hurled insults at Him and mocked Him.  They were oblivious to what was taking place in front of their eyes.
  4. The Messiah spoke in parables.
  5. The day is coming when the righteous will shine forth as the sun.  No one is righteous except Yahweh and those to whom He has imputed righteousness.  In the end, our faith in Him, or lack of it, determines our fate.

The message is simple.  The Messiah is our atoning sacrifice.  That is exactly what He said, and that is exactly what He meant.  He atoned for the sins of those who place their faith in Him.  People who don’t place their faith in Yahweh will have to pay for their sins themselves.  That’s a scary thought, but this passage of Scripture quoted above offers eternal hope:

“Behold, My Servant, whom I uphold; My chosen one in whom My soul delights.  I have put My Spirit upon Him; He will bring forth justice to the nations.  He will not cry out or raise His voice, nor make His voice heard in the street.  A bruised reed He will not break and a dimly burning wick He will not extinguish; He will faithfully bring forth justice.  He will not be disheartened or crushed until He has established justice in the earth; and the coastlands will wait expectantly for His law.” (Isaiah 42: 1-4)

Having followed the news reports coming out of Copenhagen closely, I’m reminded of a quote from William F. Buckley, Jr.”:

I am obliged to confess I should sooner live in a society governed by the first two thousand names in the Boston telephone directory than in a society governed by the two thousand faculty members of Harvard University.”

Consider asking people you know to take a look at the articles in the Climate Change Page in the column on the right.  The empirical data does NOT support the argument that manmade CO2 emissions are causing global warming.  In fact, the data tells us that the globe is cooling.  This whole deal is about taking money from nations that have developed their economic infrastructures and giving it to tinhorn dictators from Third World nations.  We should have learned a lesson from Yasser Arafat.  He died a billionaire.  We know that a huge portion of the money we send to petty tyrants ends up in personal banking accounts.  As a taxpayer, that is something I cannot endorse.
