Today’s Feature
Yahweh told Jeremiah that the Messiah’s Name is Yahweh Tsidkenu. (Jeremiah 23: 5-6) Tsidkenu is a Hebrew word that is typically translated as “righteousness,” but it actually means “justice.”
What do righteousness and justice have in common? A lot from Yahweh’s perspective. Any misconduct no matter how trivial makes a person “unholy” or “unrighteous” from Yahweh’s perspective, and as Paul said, “all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” (Romans 3:23)
Yahweh alone is without sin. He is the only One capable of paying the price for our trespasses that His Law, the Torah, requires, and He is our Redeemer. The literal meaning of “redeem” is “to pay the price.” That’s what Yahweh did for us. He died in our place and the “justice” we deserve was imposed on Him. Yahweh is our righteousness, and apart from Him we have no righteousness.
That’s what Isaiah meant when he said, “I will rejoice greatly in Yahweh, my soul will exult in my God; for He has clothed me with garments of salvation, He has wrapped me with a robe of righteousness, as a bridegroom decks himself with a garland, and as a bride adorns herself with her jewels.” (Isaiah 61: 10)
Yahweh told Isaiah something else that we need to remember: “And there is no other God besides Me, a righteous God and a Savior; there is none except Me. Turn to Me, and be saved, all the ends of the earth; for I am God, and there is no other. I have sworn by Myself, the Word has gone forth from My mouth in righteousness and will not turn back, that to Me every knee will bow, every tongue will swear allegiance, they will say of Me, ‘Only in Yahweh are righteousness and strength.’ Men will come to Him and all who were angry with Him shall be put to shame.” (Isaiah 45: 21-24)
Paul paraphrased Isaiah 45: 21-24 when he said, ““God…bestowed on Him (Jesus) the Name which is above every name, that at the Name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those who are in heaven and on earth, and under the earth, and every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.” (Philippians 2: 9-11) “Yahweh” is the Name God bestowed on Jesus. It’s the Name that is above every name, and it’s the Name to which every knee will bow when He returns.
Commentary
The October 25, 1993 issue of U.S. News & World Report was the 60th anniversary issue. Well in advance of the publication date, the editor contacted people and organizations from around the world asking them to submit questions for publication in the anniversary issue. They wanted to know what “leading thinkers” believed would be the most important questions of the day in 2053.
The President’s Office at the University of Virginia received the request and dutifully invited the faculty at UVA to submit questions. I decided to submit one. You can find it on page 72 of the anniversary issue. It reads, “How can the United States ensure that it is granted most-favored-nation trading status with China, which will be the world’s lone superpower?”
My question appears on the page with questions from Helmut Schmidt (former German chancellor), Ronald Reagan, Mikhail Gorbachev (president of the former Soviet Union), Neil Rudenstine (Harvard president at the time), and Hillary Clinton (first lady of the United States at the time) to name a few. Mine was the only question from anyone at the University of Virginia, and no one from Duke, UNC, Wake Forest, Georgia Tech, or any other ACC school made the cut either. Maybe I was the only faculty member at an ACC school who submitted a question, but I doubt it. Faculty at Harvard, Yale, Vanderbilt, Columbia, and Pennsylvania made the cut.
I’m not bragging. I’m just stating a fact. It was obvious to me in 1993 that our nation was on the wrong fiscal path and that China was moving in the right direction. Just plotting the trend lines showed that they would cross at some point and China would become the dominant player—before 2053 by my reckoning.
That day is rapidly approaching. Our nation’s GDP in 2008 was $14.26 trillion and China’s was just $7.9 trillion according to GDP estimates, but the GDP data doesn’t reveal a fundamental truth. Our nation is head-over-heels in debt ($12.9 trillion, 2009 estimate), and our debt load is rising quickly ($18.4 trillion, 2014 estimate). On top of that, our nation’s unfunded liabilities have crossed the $100 trillion plateau, and that number doesn’t include the commitments associated with President Obama’s healthcare plan.
I think President Obama’s healthcare plan will seal our fate and guarantee our economic dependence on more fiscally responsible nations, probably sooner than later. He’s making the talk show circuit today to deliver his message. Don’t be deceived. President Obama’s healthcare plan is expensive. It will 1) bankrupt this nation or 2) lead to tax increases that I don’t even want to imagine.
For your information, government estimates of program costs are notoriously inaccurate, and they typically fall on the low side. That’s the unvarnished truth. If you don’t believe me, you need to look at historical cost estimates for Medicare, for example.
When politicians are trying to pass legislation, they will tell you just about anything to get your support. I’ll say this about our president. He’s a good politician.
