ABC News—VP Pence: Turkey lobbying ‘an affirmation’ of decision to fire Flynn:

Vice President Mike Pence called revelations that former national security adviser Michael Flynn’s lobbying efforts may have benefited Turkey an “affirmation” that President Trump was right in firing him.

“It is an affirmation of the president’s decision to ask Gen. Flynn to resign,” Pence said in response to Fox News’ Bret Baier asking if he was disappointed by the news.

Flynn’s lobbying firm, Flynn Intel Group, did lobbying work in the months leading up to his White House appointment that may have benefited the Turkish government, according to a filing made on Tuesday.

The vice president’s comments came just hours after White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer claimed during Thursday’s press briefing that Trump was unaware of Flynn’s ties to Turkey.

“I don’t believe that that was known. I would refer you to General Flynn and to the Department of Justice in terms of the filings that have been made,” said Spicer.

Asked if Trump would have appointed Flynn as his adviser had he known the nature of his lobbying work, Spicer said “I don’t know.”

“That’s a hypothetical that I’m not prepared to ask,” said Spicer. “I don’t know what he discussed prior to be appointed in terms of his background, his resume, his client base. I don’t know any of that. I know that, from what I have read, he has filed the appropriate forms with the Department of Justice.”

The paperwork filed on behalf of Flynn and his firm indicated a payment of $530,000 for lobbying work he did in 2016 for a Dutch company that “could be construed to have principally benefited the Republic of Turkey.”

SnyderTalk Comment:

President Trump’s decision to fire Gen. Mike Flynn was wise.  It’s difficult for me to understand why the former Assistant to the President for National Security Affairs (a.k.a., the National Security Advisor) lied to Vice President Pence before a recent news interview.  That put Pence in the position of giving false information to reporters unawares.  The probability of that falsehood not being detected by the media was practically zero.

Flynn is not national security advisor material.  The national security advisor’s job isn’t to make national security decisions.  His job is to provide complete and accurate information to the president and his team so that the president can make national security decisions.

Flynn must have been trying to determine national security decision outcomes on his own.  The national security advisor is part of the national security team so his opinions matter, but he is not the decision maker.

Gen. Flynn is a smart man, but intelligence is not the issue.  Flynn has a trustworthiness problem.  Many times, the president will be called upon to make decisions that contradict common knowledge.  When that happens, he must be able to provide evidence that the prevailing view isn’t the correct view.  A hint of deception under that condition is enough to derail a policy initiative.  Gen. Flynn could not be relied upon to do the job, and President Trump knew it.

Now we learn that Flynn had ties to Turkey that he attempted to hide.  Who knows what other problems he had that he didn’t want the president to know about?  Lingering doubts about that question probably played an important part in the president’s decision to fire Flynn.  Too much is at stake to take chances with a person who has proven that he can’t be trusted.

Some will argue that President Trump should have known that Flynn couldn’t be trusted and never should have appointed him, because President Obama dismissed Flynn as head of the Defense Intelligence Agency in 2014.  I don’t agree.  Obama had a history of bad personnel decisions, but in Flynn’s case he was correct.

Obama’s national security decisions have caused enormous problems for the U.S.  For example, his decision to do nothing about the Islamist attack on the U.S. temporary mission in Benghazi, Libya and to lie to the American people and the world about what happened there set the stage for many more Islamist attacks.  Those involved in the cover-up include Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, National Security Advisor Tom Donilon, U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice, and President Obama.

Obama fired no one.  He bought the lies and sold them.  But he didn’t stop there.  He made Susan Rice his national security advisor, and Hillary Clinton ran for president as the Democrat nominee with Obama’s blessings and unflagging support.

Saying that most of Obama’s decisions were abominations is an understatement.  Truth and justice played no part in his administration.  In fact, Obama’s “Justice” Department was anything but.

President Trump’s willingness to address personnel issues quickly is evidence that he will not tolerate game playing by participants in the national security decision-making process.  That’s an important step in rectifying the situation.

“If My people who are called by My Name humble themselves and pray and seek My face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, will forgive their sin and will heal their land.” (2 Chronicles 7: 14)

Change that Yahweh calls “good” begins in the hearts of believers—people who are recognizable because they are different.

We are different because we belong to Him and are called by His Name.  We are Yahweh’s people, His followers.
