The Priests Look for a Way to Accuse Jesus

One day the priests brought a woman to Jesus who had been caught in the act of adultery and told Him that the Law of Moses said she should be stoned.  Then they asked Him what He thought.[i]  Obviously, this was a trap because they brought the woman to Him, but not the man.  If she was caught in the act of adultery, then he must have been caught too.  When Jesus said, “He who is without sin among you, let him be the first to throw a stone at her,”[ii] they lowered their heads and walked away one-by-one.

This incident set in motion a series of discussions between Jesus and the priests.[iii]  Eventually, the priests told Jesus that He was demon-possessed, and He said, “I do not have a demon; but I honor My Father, and you dishonor Me.”[iv]  Then He told them that anyone who believes in Him will never die.  In response, the priests said,

“Now we know you have a demon.  Abraham died, and the prophets also; and You say, ‘If anyone keeps My word, he will never taste death.’  Surely You are not greater than our father Abraham, who died?”[v]

Jesus’ reply left no room for doubt in their minds about who He claimed to be:

“If I glorify Myself, My glory is nothing; it is My Father who glorifies Me, of whom you say, ‘He is our God’; and you have not come to know Him, but I know Him; and if I say that I do not know Him, I will be a liar like you, but I do know Him and keep His Word.  Your father Abraham rejoiced to see My day, and he saw it and was glad….Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was born, I Am.”[vi]

The New Jerusalem Bible’s translation of John 8: 58 is better:

“In all truth I tell you, before Abraham ever was, I am.”[vii]

The priests understood perfectly that Jesus was claiming to be Yahweh.  Take a look at John 8: 59 and see what I mean.  They picked up stones to throw at Him, and they would have killed Jesus on the spot if they could have done it legally.  He had claimed to be Yahweh without saying the Name “Yahweh.”  It is obvious that Jesus wanted to be tried for claiming to be Yahweh, and eventually He was, but in fact, the priests convicted Him and sentenced Him to death for committing “blasphemy,” or for simply saying the Name “Yahweh.”  I will discuss this issue shortly.

When Jesus raised Lazarus from the dead, it was the last straw as far as the priests were concerned.[viii]  They were convinced that if He continued preaching and performing miracles everyone would believe in Him,[ix] so they convened the Sanhedrin and decided it was time to do away with Jesus.

“The glory which You have given Me I have given to them, that they may be one, just as We are one; I in them and You in Me, that they may be perfected in unity, so that the world may know that You sent Me, and loved them, even as You have loved Me. Father, I desire that they also, whom You have given Me, be with Me where I am, so that they may see My glory which You have given Me, for You loved Me before the foundation of the world.” (John 17: 22-24)
