The U.S. Debt Load is Unsustainable and Bernie Sanders’ Economic Proposals are Insane

Yahoo Finance ran an interesting article titled “How Bernie Sanders would remake the whole U.S. economy”:

His plans aren’t pragmatic–but a lot of voters don’t seem to care.

He may not be realistic, but he’s certainly bold.

Sen. Bernie Sanders launched his presidential campaign nine months ago with big ideas about empowering the little guy and ending “the collapse of the American middle class.” He had few detailed proposals, but as his message caught on and his campaign raised millions of dollars, he began to fill in the blanks. With the primaries underway, Sanders now has a thorough list of specific plans that would remake the whole U.S. economy were they to go into effect. Here are the biggest elements of his plan, along with cost estimates […]

Bernie Sanders’ social and economic plans are insane.  According to the Wall Street Journal, the programs he has proposed would cost roughly $18 trillion dollars.

Sanders denies that.  He says that his proposals would cost only $15 trillion.

It doesn’t matter.  Both numbers stagger the imagination, and most of his proposed spending would be funded with debt.

As of December 2015, countries in the world that are producing budget surpluses are few and tiny.  Tuvalu and Macau top the list.  Few people have heard of them.  Their surpluses are irrelevant from a global economic perspective.

Below are the world’s top 10 debtor nations.  Their debt is shown in U.S. dollars:

  1. United States: $18,772,300,000,000
  2. France: $5,750,152,000,000
  3. Germany: $5,546,869,000,000
  4. Luxembourg: $3,472,282,000,000
  5. Japan: $2,861,488,000,000
  6. Italy: $2,651,413,000,000
  7. Netherlands: $2,526,895,000,000
  8. Spain: $2,305,648,000,000
  9. China: $1,680,000,000,000
  10. Switzerland: $1,610,897,000,000

The world’s top economies—the U.S., China, Japan, and Germany—are also among the world’s most indebted nations.  The U.S. is the world’s most indebted nation by far.  France is a very distant second.

The per capita debt loads of the world’s top economies are:

  • Germany: $68,720
  • United States: $58,255
  • Japan: $24,000
  • China: $1,195

Since the U.S., China, Japan, and Germany account for just under 50% of global GDP, for all practical purposes, they are the global economy.

There is not enough money in the world to fund the debt loads being taken on by the world’s economic behemoths.  Deficit spending at these levels can’t continue.  It’s just a matter of time before the global economy collapses under the weight of mounting debt.

Bernie Sanders is proposing more of the same on steroids.  That’s a formula for disaster.

It doesn’t matter which political party wins the 2016 presidential election.  The U.S. can’t continue traveling down the path we are on and survive.

Neither political party has demonstrated that it is serious about our fiscal problems.  That’s why I prefer the “nonaffiliated” candidates on the Republican side.

13--Perspectives 2

#####

1: Raymond Ibrahim—Egypt’s “Security Threat”: Churches

On February 1, Tharwat Bukhit, a Coptic Christian member of Egypt’s parliament, announced “there are approximately 50 churches in Egypt closed for reasons of security.”

When the “Arab Spring” broke out in 2011, Egypt’s Christians compiled a list of 43 churches that had been shut down by local authorities over the years. This list was given to the prime minister of Egypt at the time, Dr. Essam Sharaf, who said that the churches would be opened as soon as possible. Yet since then, according to Bukhit, “Today, the number of closed churches has grown to almost 50.”

Why are Christian churches being “closed for reasons of security”? Whenever Christians attempt to repair, renovate, or build a church — all of which contradict Islamic law — the same chain of events follows. Local Muslims riot and rampage, and local (Muslim) officials conclude that the only way to prevent “angry youths” from acts of violence is to ban the church, which is then declared a “threat” to security.

SnyderTalk Comment: This is the real Islam.  It’s not a peaceful religion.  Ordinary peaceful Muslims aren’t real Muslims.

2: Voice of AmericaFrom Warplanes to Jihadists, Syrian Civilians Face Death on All Sides:

For civilians in northern Syria, fleeing conflict can take you right back into conflict. Wherever you turn there is war.

Escape from blistering Russian airstrikes, a ground offensive by President Bashar al-Assad’s forces in the north of the country and marauding Islamic State militants create ever more a death lottery with each passing hour – Mad Max: Fury Road but with warplanes added as well as cluster and vacuum bombs.

And even when luck has accompanied your trek, and safety is within reach a few hundred meters away, there is the final peril of death at the hands of Turkish border guards.

“At least with coalition airstrikes you know they are targeting actual Daesh positions and buildings, you stay away from them,” says 46-year-old Abu Ahmed, using an Arab acronym for Islamic State.

SnyderTalk Comment: It’s too bad that ISIS has infiltrated the Syrian “refugee” ranks.

Compassion says, “Take them in.”  Common sense says, “Not so fast.  Vet first.”

Problem is they can’t be vetted, and we know what happens when they arrive.

Question: would you invite a murderer or a rapist to live in your home with your family?

Common sense says, “No.”

3: Liz Sly—A Mini World War Rages in Aleppo, Syria:

Across the olive groves and wheat fields of the northern Syrian province of Aleppo, a battle with global dimensions risks erupting into a wider war.

Russian warplanes are bombing from the sky. Iraqi and Lebanese militias aided by Iranian advisers are advancing on the ground. An assortment of Syrian rebels backed by the United States, Turkey, Saudi Arabia and Qatar are fighting to hold them back. Kurdish forces allied both to Washington and Moscow are taking advantage of the chaos to extend Kurdish territories. The Islamic State has snatched a couple of small villages, while all the focus was on the other groups.

Ahead of a supposed pause in the hostilities negotiated by world powers and due to be implemented later in the week, the conflict seems only to be escalating. Turkey joined in over the weekend, firing artillery across its border at Kurdish positions for a second day Sunday and prompting appeals from the Obama administration to both Turks and Kurds to back down.

4: Shiri Moshe—Ohio Restaurant Owner: Machete Attack Was Anti-Israel Terrorism:

Hany Baransi has been serving authentic hummus and falafel in his central Ohio eatery for 27 years, proudly giving diners a taste of his Israeli Christian Arab heritage between bites of rich Mediterranean fare.

A sign bearing an Arabic greeting—“Ahlan Wa Sahalan”— hangs prominently near the glass doors of his Nazareth Restaurant & Deli in Columbus, through which passersby can also spot an Israeli flag. Baransi says he has always been outspoken about his Israeli identity, and so when his restaurant was attacked on Thursday evening by a machete-wielding man, he believed it was no coincidence.

The assailant, identified by police as Mohamed Barry, a 30-year-old of Somali heritage, “came in and asked where I was from,” Baransi told The Tower. While Baransi was at home nursing a headache at the time, one of his employees– a young waitress– told Barry that the owner is from Israel. The man left after he determined that Baransi wasn’t at the restaurant, only to return around 30 minutes later with a machete and start hacking people.

5: Jerusalem PostDefense Minister Ya’alon: Arab States Seeking Nukes in Wake of Iran Deal:

Israel is “seeing signs that states in the Arab world are preparing to get nuclear weapons, because they are unwilling to sit quietly with a nuclear Iran, or an Iran on the verge of a nuclear bomb,” Israeli Defense Minister Moshe Ya’alon said at a Munich security conference on Saturday. Israel is closely monitoring the enforcement of the nuclear deal with Iran, Ya’alon said, warning that even if Tehran keeps to the agreement, “15 years [when it expires] is around the corner.”

Dr. Emily Landau, who heads the Arms Control Program at the Institute for National Security Studies in Tel Aviv, said, “I believe that the motivation in some states to go down the nuclear path has increased….The three states that are often mentioned as those who would have the strongest motivation to become nuclear states if Iran were to cross the threshold are Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Turkey.”

“The first step is to set up a nuclear infrastructure that is civilian in nature. All of the proliferators have gone this route – developing a military capability under the guise of a civilian one, and all under the cover of the NPT [Nonproliferation Treaty].”

6: Jonathan Tobin—Palestinians Pretend Israel Is Stolen Arab Property:

The idea of Palestine as an Arab nation dates back only to the beginning of the 20th century. The Arab political awakening there only happened as a reaction to the return of the Jews to the land beginning in the late 19th century. But even then, the Arabs didn’t call themselves Palestinians. Up until the creation of the State of Israel that was a name only used by Jews who had embraced the British Mandate for Palestine created by the League of Nations to facilitate the creation of a national home for the Jewish people after World War I. It was only after Israel’s rebirth in 1948 that the Arabs began to call themselves Palestinians.

The Palestinians’ national identity is not so much bound up with a specific language, culture, or land as it is with the idea of resisting the return of the Jews. Without Zionism, there was no Palestinian Arab nationalism. Palestinian nationalism means rejecting the legitimacy of a Jewish state no matter where its borders might be drawn.

In order to justify their relatively newly minted national identity, the Palestinians have embraced a narrative that completely negates the Jewish connection to their ancient homeland. Their attempt to claim that Jerusalem, its Temple Mount and the Western Wall have no Jewish connections isn’t merely an insult. Such canards, which are promoted by the supposedly moderate Palestinian Authority as well as Hamas, are rooted in a need to justify the expulsion of the Jews and to pretend that the country is stolen Arab property.

7: Business InsiderU.S. Intelligence Assessment: Syria Did Not Declare All of Its Chemical Weapons in 2013 Deal:

In August 2014, the Obama administration declared that Syria’s chemical stockpile had been destroyed.

However, on Feb. 9, 2016, U.S. Director of National Intelligence James Clapper told a Senate committee:”We assess that Syria has not declared all the elements of its chemical weapons program to the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC). Despite the creation of a specialized team and months of work by the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) to address gaps and inconsistencies in Syria’s declaration, numerous issues remain unresolved.”

“Moreover, we continue to judge that the Syrian regime has used chemicals as a means of warfare since accession to the CWC in 2013.”

8: Israel HayomA stain on Israel: Ex-PM Olmert enters prison:

Former Prime Minister Ehud Olmert entered prison on Monday to begin serving his sentences, becoming the first former Israeli premier to spend time behind bars.

Olmert, who began his career as an anti-corruption crusader, was ultimately undone by the very behavior he sought to eradicate as a young Knesset member and lawyer. Olmert will serve 18 months over his bribery conviction in the Holyland trial and another month due to an obstruction of justice case, which ended in a plea bargain. He may be released on good behavior before serving the entire sentence.

Olmert voluntarily entered the Maasiyahu Prison in Ramla around 10 a.m. Monday. Prior to his incarceration, he released a video message in which he once again claimed his innocence.

SnyderTalk Comment: The U.S. should adopt the Israeli model.
