Michael J. Koplow—Israel Is the Iran Deal’s Biggest Loser:

With the latest deadline for nuclear talks with Iran looming at the end of the week, we can already predict the biggest loser in the event of a deal: Israel. An agreement along the lines of what has been reported is not what Israel wanted. It was never going to be. But the shortsighted, take-no-prisoners stance of the Israeli government has guaranteed that its concerns got shorter shrift than was absolutely necessary.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s incessant calls to prohibit any Iranian enrichment of uranium—when it was clear very early on that the P5+1 was not going to proceed along such lines—did not serve to set a negotiating baseline. Instead, it ended up marginalizing Israel and created a situation in which the American negotiating team became even more indifferent to Israeli interests. By making what was an unrealistic goal the centerpiece of his opposition strategy rather than focusing on attainable elements, such as thorough inspections or limits on ballistic missiles, Netanyahu damaged his own cause. The perception that he, not Iran, was the unreasonable party marginalized Netanyahu and assured that negotiators would not take anything else he said seriously, irrespective of the underlying truth at the heart of his position, namely that Iran is a bad actor that has spent decades fighting Israel and the West and destabilizing the Middle East.

The arena of Iranian negotiations is not the only one in which Israel’s tendency to take an extreme position has obscured the justice of an underlying issue. While Iran is the threat that looms largest in the eyes of the Netanyahu government, another major one is diplomatic isolation, a multi-tentacled menace that requires a coordinated response if Israel is to defeat it. The danger is embodied by the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement, which seeks to isolate Israel economically and culturally, but the larger risk lies with a growing perception among mass audiences that Israel deserves extra opprobrium for actions that are depicted as extraordinarily beyond the pale. Recognizing the danger of this development, the Israeli government has attacked it with guns blazing, but often in a way that leads to Israel shooting itself in the foot.

SnyderTalk Comment: Israeli Prime Minister Benyamin Netanyahu has been so outspoken about the Iran nuclear deal because Israel is in Iran’s crosshairs.  The world cannot afford a nuclear Iran.  Israel will be the biggest loser if a deal is reached, but the whole world will suffer.

See “Obama: Less than 50-50 chance for Iran deal”.  This is very misleading.  Obama wants a deal; he needs a deal; he feels as though he must have a deal.

Bottom line: there will be a deal, and it won’t be a good one.

Yaakov Lappin: Analysis: Hamas playing double game with ISIS—Hamas’ military wing is a double game with Islamic State-affiliated forces in the area, according to recent Israeli intelligence assessments. Within the Gaza Strip – where Hamas rules with an iron fist – the military wing has begun an unprecedented crackdown against pro-ISIS elements that have been firing rockets into southern Israel in recent weeks.  This crackdown includes record number of investigations and arrests by its forces targeting Salafi jihadists, such as members of the Omar Brigades, who are responsible for rocket fire into Israel this summer. Those who comply with Hamas’s demand to respect the truce with Israel receive increased support from the ruling Islamist movement, according to the assessments. Hamas is concerned with avoiding retaliation to rocket fire from Israel, which would hamper its efforts to rebuild its forces after last summer’s 50-day conflict.

Giulio Meotti: Ten Years After the London Attacks, the British Still Don’t Get it—London mourned the dead and the mutilated on the tenth anniversary of the massacre of 7 July 2005. Fifty-six victims at the hands of suicide bombers with birth certificates from Luton, Bradford, Manchester. A few days ago, at a beach on the Mediterranean, Jihad  returned to kill thirty Englishmen. But ten years later, they still do not get it. We did not understand that the terror that struck the British metropolis was a war, not the idea of a few fanatics, but the vocation of choice of the best examples of integration, boys and girls, Muslims who attended the Foremarke Hall of Repton which counts among its alumni writers like Christopher Isherwood and former archbishops of Canterbury. Boys and girls who listened to Coldplay, wanted to change the world and were photographed with ministers (as was Reyaad Khan, a leader of the Britishcell obeying the orders of the Caliph).

Bassam Tawil: Western Scandals in the Middle East— The Islamic world is currently marking the month of Ramadan with day-long fasts; during this time every Muslim must give a reckoning to Allah on the personal level, the familial level, the local level and the level of the nation of Islam. Like the Israelis, Palestinians are now taking stock of the year that has passed since the 50-day war between Hamas and Israel — what the Israelis call “Operation Protective Edge,” and Hamas calls “Operation Solid.” The report of the commission that investigated the conflict, written by pro-Palestinian Prof. William Schabas and signed by Ms. Mary Davis, did not surprise anyone in Palestine.

Richard Baehr: Democrats for the mullahs— The latest word from Vienna is that the July 7 deadline has come and gone, and ‎now the P5+1 and Iran hope to wrap things up by Friday, July 10. The three-day ‎slippage may not appear to be a big deal, but it is a delay the administration ‎hoped to avoid, since the Corker-Menendez bill provides for 60 days for congressional review of an Iran agreement if the terms are submitted to Congress ‎after July 9, but only 30 days if submitted by that date. Given summer vacations ‎and the general undesirability (heat, humidity) of being in the nation’s capital ‎during the summer months, the extra 30 days allows for both houses of Congress, ‎controlled by Republicans in each case, to set up less compressed schedules for ‎reviewing the agreement, calling in witnesses and taking the votes. And of course, it ‎provides more time for skeptical lawmakers and their staffs to read the details of ‎what has been conceded and given away and to try to determine what our side got ‎in exchange for removing most sanctions — American and ‎international — almost immediately, and providing about $150 billion to Iran.

Nima Gholam Ali Pour: Sweden’s “Creative Destruction”— The Swedish government is now preparing a law that will force all Swedish municipalities, against their will, to provide public housing for newly arrived refugees. Well into the 20th century, Sweden was a homogeneous country, where there were hardly any immigrants. Today, given Sweden’s liberal immigration policy, and the rapid and radical demographic developments taking place, Sweden’s third largest city, Malmö, is on the way to becoming a city where ethnic Swedes are in minority. Its immigrant population has gone from 27 percent in 1996, to 42% in December 2012. There are difficulties for immigrants in Sweden, as everywhere, especially in education and the labor market.

Malcolm Lowe: Combating Anti-Israel Boycotts— Recently, anxiety sprang up in Israel over anti-Israel boycotts. Ministers met, sessions were held at the Knesset, and commentators pontificated. Yet the BDS (Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions) movement against Israel is a decade old. Moreover, the excitement was provoked mainly by two high-profile incidents, the FIFA and Orange affairs, which were resolved in Israel’s favour. Nothing, in fact, has greatly changed in the overall situation. As before, some petty boycotts have succeeded, major boycotts have failed, and Israel’s relations with the rest of the world continue to expand — for now.

Burak Bekdil: Turkey’s View of Terror—Turkey’s Islamist government, now squeezed in a political drama in which it lost its parliamentary majority for the first time since 2002, has in many recent years boldly challenged its Western allies by calling them to join an allied fight against terror. But the target was not al-Qaeda, or the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) or one of the dozens of different Islamist groups designated by the civilized world as terrorist. Instead, Turkey wanted the West to fight the “terrorist state, Israel.” Turkey’s Islamist rulers have a deeply corrupted perception of which acts count for terror and which ones do not: Anyone who kills in the name of a cause other than Islamism is probably a terrorist.

4--Scripture of the Day Yahweh

Zephaniah 2

1 Gather yourselves together, yes, gather, O nation without shame, 2 before the decree takes effect—the day passes like the chaff—before the burning anger of Yahweh comes upon you, before the day of Yahweh’s anger comes upon you. 3 Seek Yahweh, all you humble of the earth who have carried out His ordinances; seek righteousness, seek humility. Perhaps you will be hidden in the day of Yahweh’s anger.

SnyderTalk Comment: Read His Name is Yahweh.

14--Blessings from Revelation 2

Blessings in the Book of Revelation is a book that you need to read, especially now.  There are blessings throughout the Scriptures but Revelation is the only book in the Bible actually containing a specific blessing for reading it. It’s repeated twice, once at the beginning and again at the end. This is the reason that I believe Revelation should be the first step toward studying biblical prophecy. Though not easy to do, Revelation can be broken down and understood by anyone, not just the academic elite. So, Revelation’s blessings are for everyone.  Click here to order the eBook.  Click here to order the paperback.
