Jeff Ludwig—A True Narrative of Jews in Israel:

In a remarkable article, “Grand Larceny,” Chloe Valdary powerfully reminds the reader that the Palestinian Arabs have succeeded in reversing the true narrative of Eretz Yisrael.  They have to a great degree succeeded in convincing people around the world that their land was stolen from them by Israel and the Jews. But Valdary points out that the reverse is closer to the truth. The land that is present-day Israel – including Judea and Samaria – was land that was brutally taken away from the Jewish people after 70 AD, and was only rightfully restored in 1947.  The story of Jewish deprivation and suffering for thousands of years is the true story of Middle Eastern “larceny.”  Valdary suggests that Israel and the Jewish people need to “re-package” the narrative of the history of Israel to replace the narrative that has gained traction among so many people.

Let us then consider the possible basis for this “new” narrative:

The Romans, Arabs, European Catholics, Seljuks, and other groups persecuted the Jews in their God-given homeland for 2000 years. The Jews remained in the land of their forefathers even though they were officially kicked out by the Romans.  A remnant clung to its historical homeland in spite of the so-called diaspora of Jews throughout the world.  They endured everything to live and breathe in the homeland of their ancestors assigned as a homeland by Almighty God.

SnyderTalk Comment: I prefer “Promised Land” instead of “Israel” in this instance because it explains the ultimate justification for protecting the rights of Jewish people to live in peace in the land that Yahweh gave to them. That distinction may not mean much to nonbelievers, but it means everything to Yahweh since He gave His word.

Elliott Abrams: Why did Hamas provoke a war?— The current battles between Israel and Hamas were provoked by Hamas. Why?‎ When increased levels of rocket fire began about a week ago, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin ‎Netanyahu responded with restraint. He sent clear messages to Hamas in public ‎statements, and via Turkey, Jordan, and Egypt, that he wanted no war, and no ‎incursion into Gaza; if the rocket attacks ended, this confrontation would be over.‎ But Hamas chose to increase the pace of firing, guaranteeing an Israeli response.‎ The question is why, and there are several answers.‎

Derek Stoffel: Hamas Out of Money, Big Supporters, Supplies, So Why Is It Shooting at Israel?—Hamas is broke. It’s lost some of its biggest supporters. Its supply lines from Egypt are cut off. The Islamist militant group is at one of its weakest points since it was founded in 1987. Yet its operatives are busy firing rockets at Israel as hostilities between the two arch-enemies continues to escalate. Why? Hamas has little other choice but to fight, say observers here. “Look, Hamas [is] in trouble, but there is no way it’s going to stop the military campaign against Israel, because the organization doesn’t see a good way to get out of it,” said Shaul Mishal, one of Israel’s experts on Hamas.

Ze’ev Jabotinsky: The ‘partner’ who never stops inciting— The day before yesterday, with perfect timing that demonstrated the total disconnect between the event and reality, a conference dubbed by its organizers “The Israel Conference for Peace” was held at an upscale Tel Aviv hotel. This was just a meeting of people who represent a shrinking minority opinion in Israeli society that is trying to recycle the delusions of the past. In a nod to pluralism, Economy Minister Naftali Bennett (Habayit Hayehudi) was also invited to speak, but participants couldn’t keep up the pretence and heckled him during his speech. Afterwards, as he was leaving the hall, they forced him to be escorted out by security guards. The Haaretz newspaper, which hosted the event, did not issue an apology and addressed the reported violence as “inappropriate behavior” by a participant who had “pushed him lightly,” as if that were all right.

Michael Curtis: Visions of Peace or Fantasies in the Middle East— Let us be generous and assume that Mahmoud Abbas, chairman of the Palestinian Authority, is sincere in his advocacy of a negotiated two-state solution to the Palestinian conflict with Israel. In his article in Haaretz of July 7, 2014 he writes that Palestine’s “vision of peace is clear.” Does that vision of peace indeed have clarity? The immediate problem is that President Abbas ignores the reality that Hamas, with whom he signed a reconciliation pact on April 23, 2014, has no such vision. Clearly, Abbas wanted to end the rivalry between his Fatah group and Hamas, and to end the bitter struggle that has continued for at least seven years since Hamas has ruled the Gaza Strip.

Oliver Williams: Hollywood, Islam and Political Correctness— In March, the TV network ABC Family cancelled the show Alice in Arabia after a campaign by the Council on American-Islamic Relations [CAIR], a controversial group with links to extremism, and accusations of racism in the liberal media. The show was to be about a Muslim American teen that is taken to Saudi Arabia by her extended family after the death of her parents and never allowed to return. ABC Family were apparently taken aback by the opposition to the show. “The current conversation surrounding our pilot was not what we had envisioned,” they said. They had seemingly set out to make an inoffensive program. Its writer, Brooke Elkmeier, said the show was pro-Arab and pro-tolerance and “meant to give Arabs and Muslims a voice on American TV.” The protagonist was an Arab Muslim.

Uzi Dayan: Ground operation necessary— A mere year and a half after Operation Pillar of Defense, we now, unsurprisingly, find ourselves facing another “round” of terrorist rocket fire from the Gaza Strip. The range of the rockets has expanded, with more than half of Israel’s population now under threat. This time, a lesson must be taught. “Returning the quiet” will not be enough. We must change the current situation, in which a terrorist group can shower rockets on a strong country like Israel. The purposes of Operation Protective Edge must be defined precisely: the toppling of the Hamas regime and the elimination of all rockets in Gaza.

Matthew Levitt: Hamas’s Not-So-Secret Weapon—Salah al-Arouri—Soon after three Israel teenagers were kidnapped last month, Israeli officials leaked to the press the name of the Hamas operational commander believed to be behind a recent surge in kidnapping plots. It was a familiar one for those who follow Hamas closely: Salah al-Arouri, a longtime Hamas operative from the West Bank, who lives openly in Turkey. The U.S. Department of Justice has described him as “a high-ranking Hamas military leader dating back to his role as a Hamas student cell leader at Hebron University in the early 1990s,” where he was recruited. Arouri’s intimate familiarity with the West Bank — he lived near Ramallah, attended college further south in Hebron, and worked with Muin Shabib to the north near Nablus — makes him uniquely suited to overseeing Hamas operations there, and for pursuing the strategy of kidnapping.

Pitan Daslani: Let’s Think about Indonesia First, Then Palestine—Indonesia’s presidential elections were held on July 9. Official results will be released in two weeks. The first priority of Indonesia’s foreign policy under a Joko Widodo-Jusuf Kalla government – if they win Wednesday’s presidential election – would be to open an Indonesian embassy in Ramallah. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs indicated in February 2012 that it was seriously studying the possibility of opening an Indonesian “representative office” in Ramallah. Indonesia’s diplomatic mission closest to Palestine currently is the embassy in Jordan, while Israel’s diplomatic mission closest to Indonesia is its embassy in Singapore. But opening an Indonesian representative office in Palestine “would not be easy, because we need to coordinate with Israel,” said the ministry’s spokesman Michael Tene. This reality cannot be ignored because opening an embassy in the absence of diplomatic relations with Israel is very challenging. To play a conciliatory role, Indonesia needs to open a dialog with Israel and adjust to the ongoing peace process. Relations with Palestine are very warm but the same can’t be said for Israel.

MK Nachman Shai: The next step: Israel’s demands— We can always answer violence with violence, but it’s better for Israel and the Palestinians to reach a deal that will guarantee quiet and limit terror.

SnyderTalk Comment: Haven’t we heard this before? Guarantees of quiet have no meaning. That’s obvious. And what, pray tell, does limiting terror mean? To cruel and inhumane people, it means nothing.

This is the cold, hard truth: Palestinian leaders of Hamas and Fatah don’t want peace. Ignoring that reality has proven to be very costly. It’s time to deal with the problem starting with Hamas.  If Abbas and Fatah don’t get the message, they should be next.

Yoav Limor: The goal: Make Hamas blink first— Israel intensified the operation in Gaza Strip on Wednesday, in an attempt to make Hamas blink first and seek a cease-fire. As part of that plan, the Israel Defense Forces doubled the number of targets attacked, focusing on the homes of Hamas’ military wing leaders in Gaza, Khan Yunis‎ and Rafah. The objective is clear — to upset the balance in a way that would see the terrorists’ own families pressure them, and to make them fear that they will lose all they hold dear.

SnyderTalk Comment: Making Hamas blink is not the objective.  Israel should pay heed to the lesson that Egypt learned in her dealings with the Muslim Brotherhood because Hamas is an offshoot of the Muslim Brotherhood.  As long as they are allowed to stir up trouble with their bloodthirsty ways, they will remain a problem.  The Muslim Brotherhood and Hamas and their brothers in Iran are the contemporary equivalent of Nazis in Germany.  They should be treated the same way.

4--Scripture of the Day Yahweh

Genesis 17: 23-27

23 Then Abraham took Ishmael his son, and all the servants who were born in his house and all who were bought with his money, every male among the men of Abraham’s household, and circumcised the flesh of their foreskin in the very same day, as God had said to him. 24 Now Abraham was ninety-nine years old when he was circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin. 25 And Ishmael his son was thirteen years old when he was circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin. 26 In the very same day Abraham was circumcised, and Ishmael his son. 27 All the men of his household, who were born in the house or bought with money from a foreigner, were circumcised with him.

14--Blessings from Revelation 2

Blessings in the Book of Revelation is a book that you need to read, especially now.  There are blessings throughout the Scriptures but Revelation is the only book in the Bible actually containing a specific blessing for reading it. It’s repeated twice, once at the beginning and again at the end. This is the reason that I believe Revelation should be the first step toward studying biblical prophecy. Though not easy to do, Revelation can be broken down and understood by anyone, not just the academic elite. So, Revelation’s blessings are for everyone.  Click here to order the eBook.  Click here to order the paperback.
