Herb Heinon— Erdogan, Israel and the upcoming Turkish municipal elections:

Turkey’s Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan rode his Israel bashing to unprecedented popularity in the Arab world a few years ago.

He was a hero – first, for demonstratively walking out on President Shimon Peres at Davos in 2009, then for extracting an apology from then deputy foreign minister Danny Ayalon for the low couch incident, with the Turkish ambassador and finally for recalling Turkey’s ambassador in Tel Aviv and expelling Israel’s envoy from Ankara, after the Mavi Marmara incident in 2010.

Hail Erdogan, the masses shouted; hail the new sultan.

DEBKAfile: To get at Obama and Kerry, Arab League summit drafts hard-line ultimatums for Israeli-Palestinian peace trackArab leaders whose summit begins in Kuwait Tuesday, March 25, are set to carry hard-line ultimatums for the US-sponsored Palestinian-Israeli negotiations as a means of derailing US Secretary of State John Kerry’s stubborn effort for a peace accord, and as a red flag for President Barack Obama three days before he lands in Riyadh.

Pinhas Inbari: Mahmoud Abbas Rejects Even Discussing the Rights of the Jewish People to a State—Since his return from Washington, where he met with President Barack Obama, Mahmoud Abbas has demonstrated on successive occasions that he is only willing to harden his position on peace with Israel. At the Arab League summit in Kuwait on March 25, Abbas said he opposed “even holding a discussion” on recognition of Israel as the nation-state of the Jewish people. To make matters worse, Abbas repeated the canard of Israeli conspiracies against the Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem, making the baseless charge that Israel was seeking to divide the Al-Aqsa Mosque between Muslims and Jews.

Michael Doran: It’s Not Just Ukraine—When Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov stepped forward last September with an offer to strip Syria’s Bashar al-Assad of his chemical weapons, President Obama saw the move as a breakthrough. Secretary of State John Kerry and Lavrov also conspired to launch Geneva II, a peace conference designed to find a diplomatic solution to the Syrian civil war. In the dawning new era, Syria was seen by the White House as a prototype: a model for stabilizing the Middle East. If successful, it could be applied to other problems in the region, including the Iranian nuclear program. Just six months later, the new model is collapsing. In fact, it never had a chance. In Putin’s view, all accommodations with the U.S. are tactical maneuvers in a struggle for the upper hand. The Kremlin sees itself as the great-power patron not just of the Assad regime but also of Iran and Hizbullah – the entire Resistance Alliance.

Femi Owolade: Boko Haram: How a Militant Islamist Group Emerged in Nigeria— The Western influence of British colonialists caused a division among the people of Northern Nigeria, who were once united by Islam. This division saw, on one side, the so-called “civilized” — by Western standards — elite who were used by the British as agents of colonization; and on the other side, the commoners, who vehemently resisted Western influence in the region. Dissatisfaction with Western influence also led to an emergence of Islamist fundamentalists among people of the Northeastern region of Nigeria. The reason Mohammed Yusuf founded Boko Haram appears to be that he saw an opportunity to exploit public outrage at government corruption by linking it to Western influence in governance.

Aaron David Miller: Why Obama Won’t Give (or Get) Much in Saudi Arabia— As President Obama heads off to Riyadh this week—the last stop, on Friday, of a Europe-heavy itinerary—he should be a happy guy. Unlike his relationship with Vladimir Putin (or Lehman Brothers), the U.S.-Saudi relationship really is too big to fail.  Key linkages—billions in recent U.S. weapons sales, counter-terrorism cooperation, and all that oil—will keep Riyadh and Washington together for some time to come, whether each side, deep down, really likes it or not. At the same time, he should be worried, too. Conflicting interests and views concerning Egypt, Syria, Iran and Palestine have created big rifts in the relationship. Unless the President is prepared to alter his approach to these issues—and be more careful about what he says to journalists about supposed Saudi difficulties with accepting “change”—the best he can do is contain the damage. Even this won’t be easy.

Michael Curtis: Why are Feminists not Standing up for Israel?— T.S. Eliot was wrong. March, not April, is the cruelest month. Certainly it is at New York University.  In the early days of the month a conference took place there on “Circuits of Influence: United State, Israel, and Palestine.”  The conference was organized by Lisa Duggan, Professor of Social and Cultural Analysis, whose academic fields at NYU are listed as lesbian and gay studies, and the history of gender and sexuality. Professor Duggan is a gender scholar rather than a political scientist renowned for expertise in Middle East history and politics. She is presently president-elect of the American Studies Association (ASA) that on December 4, 2013 disgraced itself and the academic world by its ignorance, its bias, and its bigotry in calling for a boycott of Israeli academic institutions.

Elliott Abrams: Praise the Lord and pass the MREs— It’s getting to be a habit. For the Ukrainians facing Russian aggression, the U.S. shipped MREs: meals ready to eat. For Syrian rebels facing Hezbollah, Iranian Revolutionary Guards, and President Bashar Assad’s armed forces, the U.S. is shipping ambulances and medical kits. To be more exact, Foreign Policy reports that “the State Department is about to begin delivering tens of millions of dollars worth of new assistance into Syria, including ambulances, communications gear and Toyota pickup trucks for the country’s beleaguered rebels. The so-called nonlethal assistance effort for rebels has included buses and pickup trucks, blankets, 550,000 packaged military meals and, just last month, about 1,000 medical kits.”

Shmuley Boteach: Jews Shouldn’t Accept Suffering— The movie Noah is generating global controversy even before its release. Bill Maher set the blogosphere alight when he ranted that the movie was “about a psychotic mass murderer who gets away with it, and his name is God. What kind of tyrant punishes everyone just to get back at the few he’s mad at?” The question of why God allows the innocent to suffer is the most challenging in all religion.

Raymond Ibrahim: Why ‘Moderate Islam’ is an Oxymoron— At a time when terrorism committed in the name of Islam is rampant, we are continuously being assured—especially by three major institutions that play a dominant role in forming the Western mindset, namely, mainstream media, academia, and government—that the sort of Islam embraced by “radicals,” “jihadis,” and so forth, has nothing to do with “real” Islam. “True” Islam, so the narrative goes, is intrinsically free of anything “bad.” It’s the nut-jobs who hijack it for their own agenda that are to blame.

Louis Rene Beres: Israel as a ‘crazy state’: A new definition for political science?— When I was still a young political science professor, back in the 1970s, the term “crazy state” was used sparingly in the lexicon of academic nuclear strategy. More precisely, it was referenced in assorted learned discussions of countries that may sometime be controlled by irrational national leaders, and could therefore depart from usual rules of mutual deterrence. The potential consequence of any such departure, we had already understood, could have included nuclear aggression, or perhaps even nuclear war. A ready example, back then, would have been a nuclear Iraq (remember Saddam Hussein and Osirak?). Today, I am prepared to advance an altogether different but equally useful meaning of “crazy state.”

SnyderTalk Comment: I suspect that SnyderTalk will be blocked in Turkey if Erdogan continues down the path of thought and speech control.  SnyderTalk has readers in Turkey and I have friends in Turkey, so that bothers me.  Still, SnyderTalk has a mission, and it can’t/won’t be altered because of a maniacal despot who knows that the only way he can maintain his iron grip on power is to seek and destroy any form of opposition.

Erdogan has done things in Turkey that I thought could never happen, especially in a country that was set on a rational course by Mustafa Kemal Atatürk.  In just 10 years, Erdogan has managed to undermine virtually every basic freedom that the Turks have, and he is moving down the same path that Hitler followed by focusing now on thought and speech control.

There is no question in my mind that Erdogan’s real problem with Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube is that ordinary people can use those tools to get the word out about his oppressive, Islamist regime.  When the truth is told, Erdogan looks like a monster, so he is doing what maniacal despots do when they feel threatened: squelch first and if that doesn’t work, destroy.

I hope and pray that the people of Turkey will give Erdogan the boot in upcoming elections and that Erdogan will transfer power peacefully, but candidly, I have my doubts.  Rigging elections is not out of the question, a sizable minority of the Turkish population is Islamist, and Erdogan believes that he is the center of the universe, especially the Middle East universe.  It’s a deadly combination fraught with risk and may lead to civil war in Turkey that is similar to the civil war in Syria.

I’m not saying that civil war in Turkey will happen: I’m simply pointing out that it could happen, and if Erdogan feels threatened enough, the likelihood of it happening increases.

4--Scripture of the Day Yahweh

Malachi 2: 1-5

“And now this commandment is for you, O priests. “If you do not listen, and if you do not take it to heart to give honor to My name,” says Yahweh Sabaoth, “then I will send the curse upon you and I will curse your blessings; and indeed, I have cursed them already, because you are not taking it to heart. Behold, I am going to rebuke your offspring, and I will spread refuse on your faces, the refuse of your feasts; and you will be taken away with it. Then you will know that I have sent this commandment to you, that My covenant may continue with Levi,” says Yahweh Sabaoth. My covenant with him was one of life and peace, and I gave them to him as an object of reverence; so he revered Me and stood in awe of My name.”

14--Blessings from Revelation 2

Blessings in the Book of Revelation is a book that you need to read, especially now.  There are blessings throughout the Scriptures but Revelation is the only book in the Bible actually containing a specific blessing for reading it. It’s repeated twice, once at the beginning and again at the end. This is the reason that I believe Revelation should be the first step toward studying biblical prophecy. Though not easy to do, Revelation can be broken down and understood by anyone, not just the academic elite. So, Revelation’s blessings are for everyone.  Click here to order the eBook.  Click here to order the paperback.

Other Books by Neil Snyder

  • Stand! is a suspense novel that exposes the lies, corruption, and greed underlying the theory that man-made CO2 emissions are responsible for global warming.  Professor Wes Carlyle and Karen Sterling, his research collaborator, carefully scan the audience for their would-be attacker—a member of the enviro-gestapo who has been following them for days.  Wes spots his man in the back of the room leaning against the wall.  Suddenly, another man in the audience steps forward and moves toward Karen at a menacing pace.  With a vicious stroke, he swings a billy club at her head.  Click here to order the eBook.  Click here to order the paperback.
  • What Will You Do with the Rest of Your Life? deals with a question that every Christian has to consider: what should I do with my life?  Click here to order the eBook.  Click here to order the paperback.
  • Falsely Accused is a true story about a young woman who was accused of committing a double homicide.  It’s about a travesty of justice, and it reveals Yahweh intervening in the life of a believer to rescue her from danger in the face of seemingly insurmountable odds.  Everyone will enjoy the book, but young people in particular need to read it because the mistakes made that led to the problem could have been avoided.  They were the kinds of mistakes that young people are prone to make.  As they say, forewarned is forearmed.  Click here to order the eBook.  Click here to order the paperback.
