Frida Ghitis—Are Syria, Iran playing Obama for a fool?:

Remember Syria’s chemical weapons? Yes, those, the ones the Syrian regime agreed to give up after President Obama threatened to bomb.

All of the “priority one” the most dangerous of those weapons, were supposed to be gone by December 31 last year. They’re not. Almost all of them — more than 95% — are still in Syria despite a commitment by the Syrian President Bashar al-Assad to get rid of his deadly arsenal.

The deal to remove Syria’s stock of WMD was the one tangible accomplishment of the Obama administration’s approach to the Middle East’s multiple crises. Now that deal looks to be failing, even as red flags also start flying along the path to a deal with Iran.

Caroline Glick: Trying to scare Israel— Finance Minister Yair Lapid delivered a scary speech on Wednesday. At the Institute of National Security Studies conference, Lapid warned that if we don’t accept US Secretary of State John Kerry’s framework for negotiations, the Europeans are going to take away our money. Lapid claimed that Israel’s economic future is dependent on surrendering Jerusalem, Judea and Samaria to the PLO. If we don’t, he said, the EU will abrogate its economic association agreement with us. And such a move on Europe’s part will cause serious harm to our economy.

Dan Williams: Israel wages ‘war between wars’ as Mideast threats simmer—Watching old Arab enemies reel with sectarian insurgencies and international diplomacy capping the Iranian nuclear drive, Israel’s military is confounded by a new challenge: quiet. The relative tranquility, for Israel at least, poses its own dilemma for commanders tasked with preparing for an array of potentially unpredictable future adversaries while trying to stave off steep cuts to their budget.

David P. Goldman: Turkey Is in Economic Trouble—Turkey was supposed to be the poster-boy for prosperity through Muslim democracy. Instead, its currency is collapsing. They borrowed vast sums from the international market against a glorious future that was never to be. Among all of the world’s big economies, Turkey has the worst current account deficit, at nearly 8% of economic output, roughly where Greece was before its national bankruptcy.

Al Pessin: Gaps ‘Wide’ as Syria Talks Wrap Up First Round—U.N. mediator Lakhdar Brahimi wrapped up the first round of Syria peace talks in Geneva Friday reporting little progress on key issues of how to end the fighting and get much-needed humanitarian aid to besieged areas. Brahimi told reporters the next round is set to begin on February 10, pending agreement from the Syrian government. Still, the government has not confirmed that it will attend. Brahimi was frank during his press conference, saying “The gaps between the sides remain wide; there is no use pretending otherwise.”

Khalid Amayreh: Palestinians Denounce Western “Financial Blackmail”—European officials recently warned the Palestinians that European countries were suffering from “donor fatigue” after spending billions of dollars in aid with limited results in achieving a lasting peace with the Israelis. “It has been made very clear to the Palestinians that just sitting around and waiting is not an option,” said Lars Faaborg-Andersen, EU ambassador to Israel. “We have made it clear to the parties that there will be a price to pay if these negotiations falter.”

Emily Amrousi: Settlers have passed point of no return— 1. Spare us all the poll numbers. For a minute, let’s assume that Israel pursues the twisted idea of transferring sovereignty to the Palestinians and forsaking the Israelis living in Judea and Samaria. An overwhelming majority of settlers would, on the very same day, heap their personal effects atop their cars, and head toward Israel proper. The idea of handing over settlements to the Palestinians is tantamount to an immediate death sentence.

David Horovitz: Sharansky: Are the Palestinians Ready for Peace?—Former Soviet dissident and government minister, and today Jewish Agency chairman, Natan Sharansky said he had been arguing since the 1990s that the best way to judge the seriousness of the peace process – the best criterion by which to gauge whether the two societies were truly ready for peace – was by their handling of the issue of Jews in a Palestinian state and Arabs in Israel. There’ll be room for optimism when “we don’t have to discuss how we are removing Jews and how they are removing Arabs” from each other’s territory.

Richard Wike: The Limited Allure of Islamic Extremism—When it comes to hearts and minds, al-Qaeda and its ilk have repeatedly demonstrated that they have very limited appeal. Indeed, the more people are exposed to extremist violence and al-Qaeda-style rule, the less they like it. In 2004, 41% of Pakistani Muslims said suicide bombings and other forms of violence against civilian targets could often or sometimes be justified. By 2013 that number had fallen to 3%. A 2005 Pew Research poll found 57% of Jordanian Muslims believed that suicide bombings could often or sometimes be justifiable. As of March 2013, support for suicide bombing among Muslims in Jordan had tumbled to 12%.

Michael Makovsky and William Kristol: The Obama Complex—President Obama couldn’t resist confiding to a recent interviewer, “I am comfortable with complexity.” In fact, he is comfortable with a kind of pseudo-complexity that lends itself to pseudo-thoughtful formulations. Thus, in his State of the Union address last week the president explained to his benighted and presumably bellicose fellow citizens: “You see, in a world of complex threats, our security and leadership depends on all elements of our power—including strong and principled diplomacy.” (The “you see” is particularly condescending, even by Obama’s standards.) The point is, with respect to Iran, “we must give diplomacy a chance to succeed.”

Paul Bond: Oscar Winner Pens Letter Accusing Academy of Christian ‘Bigotry’ in Song Flap (Exclusive)— Gerald Molen, an Oscar-winning producer of Schindler’s List, is accusing the Academy of discriminating against a religious movie in revoking its nomination in the best song category. In a feisty letter to Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences president Cheryl Boone Isaacs, a copy of which was obtained by The Hollywood Reporter, Molen attacks the group’s Jan. 29 decision to rescind the nomination for Alone Yet Not Alone, an overtly faith-based film, over allegations that its songwriter Bruce Broughton, a former Academy governor, improperly lobbied members of the song branch. If Broughton and co-writer Dennis Spiegel are ineligible for an Oscar merely for asking people to give their tune a listen, he argues, more Oscar winners should be required to return their statues because they all promoted their work to some degree or another.

4--Scripture of the Day Yahweh

Haggai 2: 10-19

On the twenty-fourth of the ninth month, in the second year of Darius, the word of Yahweh came to Haggai the prophet, saying, “Thus says Yahweh Sabaoth, ‘Ask now the priests for a ruling: ‘If a man carries holy meat in the fold of his garment, and touches bread with this fold, or cooked food, wine, oil, or any other food, will it become holy?’” And the priests answered, “No.” Then Haggai said, “If one who is unclean from a corpse touches any of these, will the latter become unclean?” And the priests answered, “It will become unclean.” Then Haggai said, “‘So is this people. And so is this nation before Me,’ declares Yahweh, ‘and so is every work of their hands; and what they offer there is unclean. But now, do consider from this day onward: before one stone was placed on another in the temple of Yahweh, from that time when one came to a grain heap of twenty measures, there would be only ten; and when one came to the wine vat to draw fifty measures, there would be only twenty. I smote you and every work of your hands with blasting wind, mildew and hail; yet you did not come back to Me,’ declares Yahweh. ‘Do consider from this day onward, from the twenty-fourth day of the ninth month; from the day when the temple of Yahweh was founded, consider: Is the seed still in the barn? Even including the vine, the fig tree, the pomegranate and the olive tree, it has not borne fruit. Yet from this day on I will bless you.’”

14--Blessings from Revelation 2

Blessings in the Book of Revelation is a book that you need to read, especially now.  There are blessings throughout the Scriptures but Revelation is the only book in the Bible actually containing a specific blessing for reading it. It’s repeated twice, once at the beginning and again at the end. This is the reason that I believe Revelation should be the first step toward studying biblical prophecy. Though not easy to do, Revelation can be broken down and understood by anyone, not just the academic elite. So, Revelation’s blessings are for everyone.  Click here to order the eBook.  Click here to order the paperback.
