Richard Baehr: Switching sides— The Obama Administration Has Become Part of the Iranian Propaganda Machine

Earlier this week, The New Yorker published a 17,000 word article by its editor, David Remnick, summarizing his time spent recently in travels with President Barack Obama. That Remnick should get such access to the president is not a surprise, since under his leadership, The New Yorker has shifted in a significant way from a magazine that was once known and widely respected for its fiction, essays and cartoons, to a magazine indistinguishable from many others for its role advancing the favored causes of the Left in the nation’s political wars — whether it be hysteria about climate change, bashing Israel and its American supporters, or mocking Tea Party supporters and their preferred candidates, as well as Republicans of any denomination. Previous editor Tina Brown had turned The New Yorker into a Vanity Fair twin with fewer pictures and longer articles. Remnick has made The New Yorker a close relation of The Nation with more fashion ads and better paper stock, and the one constant — longer articles.

Remnick had already given his loving embrace to Obama in a lengthy biography “The Bridge” that was little read, and now found mainly on remainder shelves or on Amazon.com for a penny for the hardcover edition. Remnick discovered some evidence of creative writing (fiction) in Obama’s memoir, but worked hard to preserve the reputation of the president, ignoring all evidence that Obama was not even the author of the much lauded “Dreams From My Father“. America’s great black hope had to be protected, whatever Remnick discovered (or chose to ignore) in his research for the book.

13--Perspectives 2

Christopher Dickey: Netanyahu: Israel’s What’s Right With the Middle East— Bibi Netanyahu talked to the World Economic Forum this afternoon like a pitchman on a road show. The prime minister of Israel was selling, selling, selling his country not just as “the start-up nation” but “the innovation nation.” Even its creation was an innovation, he said. And, oh, by the way, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani, who spoke earlier in the day, simply lied about Iran’s intentions in Syria and its effort to build nukes. Rouhani’s rhetoric was a “change of words with unchanging deeds,” said Netanyahu, and what’s more, many of the Arab governments in the region understand that.

Daniel Pipes: The Sick Middle East— The recent fall of Fallujah, Iraq, to an Al-Qaeda-linked group provides an unwelcome reminder of the American resources and lives devoted in 2004 to 2007 to control the city – all that effort expended and nothing to show for it. Similarly, outlays of hundreds of billions of dollars to modernize Afghanistan did not prevent the release of 72 prisoners who have attacked Americans. These two examples point to a larger conclusion: maladies run so deep in the Middle East (minus remarkable Israel) that outside powers cannot remedy them. Here’s a fast summary: Water is running out. A dam going up on the Blue Nile in Ethiopia threatens substantially to cut Egypt’s main water supply by devastating amounts for years. Syria and Iraq suffer from water crises because the Euphrates and Tigris rivers are drying up. Growing the narcotic qat plant absorbs so much of Yemen’s limited water supplies that Sana’a may be the first modern capital city to be abandoned because of drought. Ill considered wheat-growing schemes in Saudi Arabia depleted aquifers.

Emily B. Landau and Ephraim Asculai: Implementation of the Interim Deal: New Realities in Advance of Renewed Negotiations— On January 20, 2014, IAEA inspectors visited Natanz and Fordow to verify that Iran began implementing the interim deal with the P5+1 by halting its enrichment of uranium at these facilities to 20 percent. The last two months were spent rehashing the terms of what had ostensibly already been decided in late November in Geneva, although the different versions of the agreement that were released by Washington and Tehran at the time revealed immediately that the two states were not on the same page, which did not bode well for the continued process. The dispute over the correct interpretation of what was decided is still far from over, as evidenced by Iranian accusations days before implementation began that the “Summary” of the understandings released by the White House was “a unilateral and one-sided interpretation” of what had been agreed. It is also unclear why the White House chose to release only a summary, rather than the full text of the new understandings.

Nadav Shragai: What Peres fails to understand—The Palestinians have invented a new nation — the “Israeli nation.” They are prepared to recognize the right of the “Israeli nation” to exist in peace and security as a state, as long as it is not a Jewish state. That is the Palestinian version of “a state for all its citizens,” in which the Jewish and national identity of the State of Israel is completely obscured. Even when the Palestinians grit their teeth and talk about “two states for two peoples,” they are not talking about states for a Palestinian nation and a Jewish nation, but for a Palestinian nation and an Israeli nation. This game, which has a clear goal, is again confusing President Shimon Peres, who is chronically mistaken in his analysis of the true intentions of the Palestinians. See: the Oslo Accords, the New Middle East, comrade Yasser Arafat.

The Daily Star [Lebanon] Editorial: Collapsing colossus—The bomb attacks targeting Egypt’s capital Friday represent a disturbing development for the country’s stability, and highlight the presence of a growing segment of society which feels completely negated by the current system. Those who care about the region had tried to convince themselves Egypt was immune to the type and scale of violence that has befallen Iraq, Yemen, Libya and Syria, among others, but worryingly, it looks as though this is not the case. The region’s giant, Egypt seemed too big to fall, and while attacks targeting security forces have grown increasingly frequent in the Sinai and other provinces, these are the first major incidents in Cairo.

AP/Aron Heller: Israel Warns of Growing Jihadi Threat from Syria— A sharp increase in the number of al-Qaeda linked fighters joining the fight against President Bashar Assad in Syria is threatening to spill over the borders and prompting the Jewish state to re-evaluate its policy of neutrality in the civil war next door, a senior Israeli intelligence official warned on Friday. The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because military regulations prevent him from releasing the information, claimed more than 30,000 al-Qaeda linked fighters are active in Syria, a huge increase over previous Western estimates. He did not disclose how Israel reached the figure or specify which groups were included in the count, only defining the fighters as believers in “global jihad,” which he said meant a mix of those linked to al-Qaeda or inspired by the terror network.

Lawrence Solomon: Why the one-state solution increases odds of success— Stephen Harper was dead on this week in his speech to the Israeli parliament when he lauded Israel for being “the only country in the Middle East which has long anchored itself in the ideals of freedom, democracy and the rule of law,” when he stated that those ideals “are the things that, over time and against all odds, have proven to be the only ground in which human rights, political stability, and economic prosperity, may flourish,” and when he expressed his desire for “a just and secure future for the Palestinian people.” But he was dead wrong when he concluded that the Palestinian people and their leaders should pursue a two-state solution in their negotiations with Israel, in the hope of a sovereign Palestinian state “committed to living peacefully alongside the Jewish state of Israel.”

Ariel Ben Solomon: Inside Iran: Iran’s demographic problem— Is there a correlation between Iran’s nuclear program and its low fertility rate or, perhaps as well, between the vitality of Islamic civilization and its shrinking birthrates? There is, according to David Goldman, a fellow at the right-wing, US-based think tank the Middle East Forum, and a longtime writer for Asia Times Online under the moniker Spengler. The author of How Civilizations Die: (And Why Islam Is Dying Too), Goldman, an economist by training, explains the impact demographic fluctuations have on the greater strategic balance of power between states and civilizations. In an interview with The Jerusalem Post during a recent visit to Israel to promote the launch of the Hebrew version of his book, Goldman explained how he has followed demographic literature and the changes in Muslim demography.

Dr. Abdulaziz Sager: Challenging times for Saudi foreign policy— For a long period, the quiet, discreet and publicity-shy diplomacy and foreign policy of Saudi Arabia worked well to protect the interests of the Kingdom. This included preserving the internal security of the Kingdom while at the same time preventing regional issues from escalating and damaging the state’s fundamental interests. The Arab Spring, however, upset the regional order and disrupted the established balance to a point that it presented the Kingdom with a set of new and unprecedented challenges. This in turn required a more activist position rather than the behind-the-scenes role played by the Kingdom for so long. Such a shift should not have come as a surprise given the tremendous changes in the region. From Saddam Hussein’s Iraq to Mubarak’s Egypt to Qaddafi’s Libya and Saleh’s Yemen, Riyadh has had to adjust to the new realities in the rest of the Middle East, and this had to be done in an incredibly short period.

Israel Hayom: Descent into chaos: Celebrations in Egypt turn deadly— Three years after former President Hosni Mubarak was ousted from office, chaos has taken over Egypt. The events marking the anniversary of the dictator’s fall from power quickly turned into a display of violence and terror and Egyptian officials said Sunday that the death toll had reached 49. The Health Ministry, quoted by the official MENA news agency on Sunday, said another 247 were wounded. The agency quoted the Interior Ministry as saying 1,079 were arrested.

4--Scripture of the Day Yahweh

Zephaniah 3: 12-15

“But I will leave among you a humble and lowly people, and they will take refuge in the name of Yahweh. The remnant of Israel will do no wrong and tell no lies, nor will a deceitful tongue be found in their mouths; for they will feed and lie down with no one to make them tremble.” Shout for joy, O daughter of Zion! Shout in triumph, O Israel! Rejoice and exult with all your heart, O daughter of Jerusalem! Yahweh has taken away His judgments against you, He has cleared away your enemies. The King of Israel, Yahweh, is in your midst; you will fear disaster no more.

14--Blessings from Revelation 2

Blessings in the Book of Revelation is a book that you need to read, especially now.  There are blessings throughout the Scriptures but Revelation is the only book in the Bible actually containing a specific blessing for reading it. It’s repeated twice, once at the beginning and again at the end. This is the reason that I believe Revelation should be the first step toward studying biblical prophecy. Though not easy to do, Revelation can be broken down and understood by anyone, not just the academic elite. So, Revelation’s blessings are for everyone.  Click here to order the eBook.  Click here to order the paperback.
