Steve Apfel—Borrowing Jesus:

How uncommonly useful it often is to couple a great figure to some dark vendetta. And nothing could be simpler. All it takes is for the figure to be dead, because you don’t want it protesting the rude liberty you have taken with its name. Hardly was Nelson Mandela cold in his grave when self righteous media elements hoicked the great figure onto their bandwagon of choice.

Before Mandela there was Jesus. What bandwagon or vendetta has not taken liberties with Jesus, so that two thousand years later he cuts a refined European image quite divorced from the kosher ‘Yid’ of Galilee and Judaea.

Today, Jesus cuts a more contemporary figure. He, like Nelson Mandela, has been refashioned into a grievance leader no less. Now you don’t spare your trump card for any grievance that happens along; you keep it for a cause célèbre.

You hold the Nelson Mandela name in reserve for grand posturing. You bring it out to attack a people who universally offend by their chutzpah of existing. Israel’s antagonists value Nelson Mandela dead more than they valued him alive because it frees them to take liberties with his name.

But compared to the Son of God what is the Mandela brand? Nor do you have to be a liberal, or even Christian, to couple him to your special vendetta. The Palestine Liberation Organization is not a liberal or a Christian body, yet we’ll see that the PLO has borrowed Jesus. Alumni of Bethlehem Bible College, who also borrow Jesus, are Christian, as are attendees of annual Christ at the (Israeli) Checkpoint Conferences.

Out of Palestine shall go forth the Law, and He shall rebuke the Israeli occupiers. Israel-hating Christians borrow the Son of God not to beat swords into ploughshares and spears into pruning hooks; they bring him on for more mundane acts. They want the Son of the Holy Trinity to walk through a military checkpoint in the West Bank.

13--Perspectives 2

#####

Dovid Efune: Obama the Philosopher, Netanyahu the General— In an off-camera aside following a recent television interview in which I discussed the respective Israeli and U.S. approaches to Iran’s nuclear program, the host turned to me and asked if I could help him understand what President Obama is thinking. “I know I won’t agree (with Obama),” he said, “but I just want to understand.” At the time, I had little of substance to answer. Weeks later, while reading the chapter on war from historians Will and Ariel Durant’s “The Lessons of History,” I came across their staged conversation between a philosopher and a general about how to deal with belligerent states.

Dani Dayan: Settlements: Legal, legitimate, necessary—The last few weeks have seen a European-led political and economic assault on the Jewish communities of Judea and Samaria (commonly referred to as “West Bank settlements”). The British government has advised her citizens not to do business in the ancient historical Jewish homeland, including parts of Jerusalem. Some European supermarkets have even begun labeling our produce to encourage boycotts. This well-orchestrated effort to demonize and delegitimize our communities is bearing its poisonous fruits. However, it will not bring peace any closer nor will it serve the cause of justice or advance the values in which Europe holds dear, as in reality, the “settlements” are legal, legitimate and necessary for peace.

Yoav Limor: Both sides wary of escalation— Israel and Hamas have made considerable efforts to prevent the situation in southern Israel from escalating after the toughest day of fighting in the Gaza Strip since Operation Pillar of Defense in November 2012. Senior Egyptian officials were involved in these efforts, guided by Israel’s unequivocal demand of Hamas to curb the situation on the ground. Defense and Shin Bet security agency officials said Tuesday that the sniper fire, which killed one Israeli, was the work of a radical terrorist group in the Gaza Strip, which acted without Hamas’ knowledge and contrary to its directives.

Dan Margalit: Growing disquiet— The first two Palestinian intifadas began on the street. They were not initiated by Palestinian leaders. It was only after the tiger began to thrash about uncontrollably that Palestinian leaders jumped on its back. Is this scenario now repeating itself for a third time? The increasing number of Palestinian attacks on Israelis is a bad omen. But the prevailing assumption is still that Hamas is not interested in a confrontation right now due to its ongoing dispute with Egypt and that Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas will not do anything to sour his relationship with U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry at this stage of the peace negotiations.

Nadav Shragai: Atmospheric terrorism— A new phrase has been coined: “atmospheric terrorism.” This is not the Third Intifada, senior officials explain, but rather sporadic, low-level incidents of stone throwing, fire bombs and stabbings; with a few exceptions (for now), such as the Bat Yam bus bombing, these incidents were just spontaneous products of the atmosphere. Describing the situation in such placating terms has just one advantage. It allows us to grab the bull by the horns and ask: What exactly is the origin of this atmosphere, which has triggered small incidents that may easily develop into something more organized?

Laura King and Amro Hassan: Egypt declares Muslim Brotherhood a terrorist organization—In a sharp escalation of the confrontation between Egypt’s military-backed administration and the Muslim Brotherhood, the interim government on Wednesday declared the Islamist movement a terrorist organization. The step gives Egyptian authorities even broader authority to move against the Brotherhood, which already has been the target of a harsh and sustained campaign by security forces and the judicial system.

Clifford D. May: Iran’s delays and deceptions— Just before Congress recessed for the holidays, 26 senators, 13 Democrats and 13 Republicans led by Senators Robert Menendez (D-N.J.) and Mark Kirk (R-Ill.), introduced the Nuclear Weapon Free Iran Act of 2013. Its purpose: to ready new sanctions that would be triggered only if Iran’s rulers fail to meet the obligations they have undertaken under a “Joint Plan of Action,” or foot-drag on talks meant to lead to a “comprehensive agreement.” That agreement is to offer the theocrats a simple deal: relief from increasing economic isolation and pressure in exchange for the verifiable dismantlement of their nuclear weapons program — an illegal program condemned by six U.N. Security Council resolutions. The bill has displeased Iran’s rulers and infuriated many on the American Left. “Saboteur sen. launching war push” ran the histrionic headline above Menendez’s photo in The Huffington Post last week.

Amos Yadlin: Regime Stability in the Middle East: An Analytical Model to Assess the Possibility of Regime Change— The wave of uprisings that swept through Arab states in recent years has transformed the Middle East. Against this background, there is a need for a comprehensive analytical model to help assess both the likelihood of regime stability and the probability of regime change. This study proposes a model to identify the key elements that encourage or inhibit regime change. Assigning numerical weight to each of these elements, it analyzes the dynamics between them. Looking at case studies of four states through the prism of the proposed model, the authors examine the elements that led to the instability in Egypt of January 2011, explain why the Saudi Arabian and Iranian regimes are stable, and provide a new understanding of the struggle in Syria, pointing out factors that will be critical to the fate of the civil war. The authors contend that the model helps explain the regional changes, and allows insights into the dynamics at work in particular states. As such, it can serve as a tool to assess prospects for uprisings in the Middle East and the impact of future uprisings on the stability of the region.

Adam Levick: The Prize for ‘UK Paper Blaming Israel for Ruining Christmas in Bethlehem’ Goes To…—Surprisingly, this year the award does NOT go to the Guardian. It goes to The Times [of London] for a story by Catherine Philp that is riddled with errors and distortions.

Daniel Greenfield: A Left-Wing America Stands Alone— American progressives like to think of their country as backward and reactionary compared to Europe. And they have never been more right than now when Europe and the rest of the First World have gone right while America under Obama has been left back. Recently Australia, Japan and Norway welcomed in conservative governments. Tony Abbott, Australia’s new prime minister, is a former heavyweight boxer who attended Oxford and is putting a spoke in the wheel of the Global Warming ecohoax. Japan is casting off its pacifism and standing up to the People’s Republic of China and Norway gave its left-wing government the boot and moved in “Iron Erma” in a coalition with the libertarian Progress Party which opposes taxes and immigration and supports free enterprise.

SnyderTalk Comment:

The left in America think of themselves as smarter than “conservatives” who they love to mock and ridicule, but they are not really “progressive”.  That’s another word that they have commandeered and butchered just like they did with “liberal”.

They aren’t progressive; they are regressive.  They aren’t liberal; they are intolerant, greedy, narrow-minded, and intellectually vacuous.  They ignore facts, make up pseudo-facts, squelch voices of reason, and champion programs to address “problems” that are entirely imaginary—at the taxpayers’ expense, of course.

Regrettably, we elect them, and do great damage to our country in the process.  After 5 years of Obama and his henchmen in the House and Senate, it’s becoming impossible for thinking people to deny the truth of these assertions.  They have done their utmost to strip the moral underpinnings from America’s foundation, and they have done it with our support because we put them in office.

2014 will be a pivotal year.  Will we allow them to continue?

4--Scripture of the Day Yahweh

The scripture below is from the New American Standard Bible, and the hyperlinks associated with each word are from Strong’s Concordance for the New American Standard Bible.

Nahum 3: 5-10

“Behold, I am against you,” declares Yahweh Sabaoth; “and I will lift up your skirts over your face, and show to the nations your nakedness and to the kingdoms your disgrace. I will throw filth on you and make you vile, and set you up as a spectacle. And it will come about that all who see you will shrink from you and say, ‘Nineveh is devastated! Who will grieve for her?’ Where will I seek comforters for you? Are you better than No-amon, which was situated by the waters of the Nile, with water surrounding her, whose rampart [was] the sea, whose wall [consisted] of the sea? Ethiopia was [her] might, and Egypt too, without limits. Put and Lubim were among her helpers. Yet she became an exile, she went into captivity; also her small children were dashed to pieces at the head of every street; they cast lots for her honorable men, and all her great men were bound with fetters.”

14--Blessings from Revelation 2

Blessings in the Book of Revelation is a book that you need to read, especially now.  There are blessings throughout the Scriptures but Revelation is the only book in the Bible actually containing a specific blessing for reading it. It’s repeated twice, once at the beginning and again at the end. This is the reason that I believe Revelation should be the first step toward studying biblical prophecy. Though not easy to do, Revelation can be broken down and understood by anyone, not just the academic elite. So, Revelation’s blessings are for everyone.  Click here to order the eBook.  Click here to order the paperback.
