Jonathan Spyer—Fear and loathing in Riyadh:

Western news coverage tends to depict Israel as the chief advocate for a hard line against the Iranian nuclear program.

But the concerns of the Gulf states, in particular Saudi Arabia, are of equal or greater urgency.

Since the foundation of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the US has performed the role of protector for Riyadh. The departure of the British from the Gulf area in the early 1970s meant that the small Gulf monarchies also came to depend on the US for protection.

Washington has bases up and down the Arab side of the Gulf.

But the mere presence of these bases no longer bring a feeling of security. The Arab monarchs and emirs of the Gulf Cooperation Council countries (Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain, Oman, Qatar and United Arab Emirates) are watching with dismay as US President Barack Obama’s administration seeks rapprochement with Tehran.

It is Saudi Arabia which is most concerned. Riyadh is engaged in a struggle to contain and set back Iranian expansion across the region.

13--Perspectives 2

#####

Nancy A. Youssef: Christians too afraid to complain as treatment in new ‘democracy’ worsens— Nearly three months after nearby residents looted and burned the Archangel Michael Church, Rida Gaballah, 49, one of the six people who tried to stave off thousands of attackers, stood among the ruins. Utterly dismayed by the missing pews, the charred paintings of Jesus and the cross ripped off from the front door, he simply kept repeating: “This scene is horrible. This scene is horrible.”

Freddy Eytan: France-Israel Relations and the Iranian Nuclear Bomb— French President Francois Hollande arrived in Israel for an official state visit to Jerusalem and Ramallah on Sunday, bringing a promise to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons, along with an ardent wish to advance the peace process between Israel and the Palestinians. From Hollande’s perspective, the timing of this visit could not be better. The United States’ diminishing credibility and strategic grip within the Arab world has created a golden opportunity.  Sunni friends loyal to Washington, such as Egypt, Saudi Arabia and the Gulf States, are furious at President Obama’s rush to sign a treaty with the ayatollah regime in Tehran, which would act to strengthen the Shiite camp hostile to them.

Amos Regev: Difficult. Daring. Doable.— Here is a well-known Israeli scene: A vehicle gets stuck on the uphill road to Jerusalem. The driver stands on the shoulder of the road, the hood of the car is open and a cloud of smoke rises from the engine into the man’s sweating face. Another vehicle pulls up behind the disabled car and an obese man approaches the forlorn driver and bends down to view the overheated engine. “Let me do this, leave it to me,” the supposed savior says, full of good will. “I know what to do, I was a mechanic in the armored corps.” This usually doesn’t end well.

Amos Yadlin and Avner Golov: If Attacked, How Would Iran Respond?—The main Iranian military threat in the event of an attack on Iranian nuclear facilities would be a volley of conventional missiles and rockets launched at Israel’s cities and nuclear installations by Iran and Hizbullah, along with the threat of terrorist attacks against military and civilian targets. A review of Iranian capabilities indicates that Israel can successfully deal with Iranian responses to an attack. These scenarios are far from large-scale war, which is highly improbable.

Ephraim Asculai: Iranian Confidence-Building Measures: Real or Illusory?—The November 2013 International Atomic Energy Agency report on Iran disclosed several interesting facts: No new gas centrifuge machines for the enrichment of uranium had been installed at any of the known Iranian facilities; construction of the IR-40 heavy water reactor at Arak was not progressing; the 20%-enriched uranium UF6 stocks increased very little; and the IAEA concluded an agreement with Iran on the implementation of several inspection rights and the provision of additional information that the IAEA requested.

Boaz Bismuth: Hollande, be a champion of morality— There is a very good chance that the Iran talks this week will culminate with a signed agreement. That is, unless the language of Molière carries the day once again.

Minister Gilad Erdan: Time to squeeze Iran— Any deal with Iran must be a means of ending Iran’s nuclear weapons program.

Boaz Bismuth: The French connection— Speaking during his visit on Sunday, French President François Hollande said exactly what Israel wanted to hear: “We will never agree to Iran possessing a nuclear weapon because this is not only a threat to Israel, but to the whole world.” In Hebrew, the French president added: “I will always remain a friend of Israel’s.” Perhaps it’s easier now to understand why, just two days before talks in Geneva resume, France remains Israel’s last hope for an acceptable deal.

Dr. Nancy Snyderman: NBC News Correspondent “in Awe” of Israeli Medics in Philippines—I’ve always been fascinated by how well the Israel Defense Forces delivers emergency response medical care in extremely poor conditions. My first experience with the IDF was in Haiti after the devastation of the earthquake there. They were remarkable then, triaging and treating patients in the midst of the devastation.

Dr. Ileana Johnson Paugh: “I Can’t Believe” This is Happening in America—My “I Can’t Believe This is Happening to America” list is growing larger by the day. It is so vast now, I can write a book. Would my book have an audience? Judging by the eagerness with which most Americans have embraced the transformational hope and change of our country to communist utopia, the answer is no. I can’t believe New Yorkers have elected a blatant Marxist as their mayor. I can’t believe Terry McAuliffe is the governor of Virginia. The American men who fought in the Revolutionary War must be turning in their graves knowing that the hallowed ground in Virginia they defended against the British tyranny is now run by Marxist Democrats.

4--Scripture of the Day Yahweh

The scripture below is from the New American Standard Bible, and the hyperlinks associated with each word are from Strong’s Concordance for the New American Standard Bible.

Jonah 3: 5-9

Then the people of Nineveh believed in God; and they called a fast and put on sackcloth from the greatest to the least of them. When the word reached the king of Nineveh, he arose from his throne, laid aside his robe from him, covered[himself] with sackcloth and sat on the ashes. He issued a proclamation and it said, “In Nineveh by the decree of the king and his nobles: Do not let man, beast, herd, or flock taste a thing. Do not let them eat or drink water. But both man and beast must be covered with sackcloth; and let men call on God earnestly that each may turn from his wicked way and from the violence which is in his hands. Who knows, God may turn and relent and withdraw His burning anger so that we will not perish.”

14--Blessings from Revelation 2

Blessings in the Book of Revelation is a book that you need to read, especially now.  There are blessings throughout the Scriptures but Revelation is the only book in the Bible actually containing a specific blessing for reading it. It’s repeated twice, once at the beginning and again at the end. This is the reason that I believe Revelation should be the first step toward studying biblical prophecy. Though not easy to do, Revelation can be broken down and understood by anyone, not just the academic elite. So, Revelation’s blessings are for everyone.  Click here to order the eBook.  Click here to order the paperback.
