Bruce Thornton—Christian Tragedy in the Muslim World:

Few people realize that we are today living through the largest persecution of Christians in history, worse even than the famous attacks under ancient Roman emperors like Diocletian and Nero. Estimates of the numbers of Christians under assault range from 100-200 million. According to one estimate, a Christian is martyred every five minutes. And most of this persecution is taking place at the hands of Muslims. Of the top fifty countries persecuting Christians, forty-two have either a Muslim majority or have sizeable Muslim populations.

The extent of this disaster, its origins, and the reasons why it has been met with a shrug by most of the Western media are the topics of Raymond Ibrahim’s Crucified Again. Ibrahim is a Shillman Fellow at the David Horowitz Freedom Center and an associate fellow of the Middle East Forum. Fluent in Arabic, he has been tracking what he calls “one of the most dramatic stories” of our time in the reports and witnesses that appear in Arabic newspapers, news shows, and websites, but that rarely get translated into English or picked up by the Western press. What he documents in this meticulously researched and clearly argued book is a human rights disaster of monumental proportions.

In Crucified Again, Ibrahim performs two invaluable functions for educating people about the new “Great Persecution,” to use the label of the Roman war against Christians. First, he documents hundreds of specific examples from across the Muslim world. By doing so, he shows the extent of the persecution, and forestalls any claims that it is a marginal problem. Additionally, Ibrahim commemorates the forgotten victims, refusing to allow their suffering to be lost because of the indifference or inattention of the media and government officials.

Abraham Foxman: U.S. Refusal to List Jerusalem as Israel on Passports Is Offensive—A U.S. federal appeals court ruled this week that allowing “Jerusalem, Israel” on passports of U.S. citizens born in Jerusalem would infringe on the U.S. president’s power to recognize foreign governments. This should not be a question of legalities or separation of powers. It should be a question of sensible public policy. Jerusalem was always the capital of Israel. Yet the U.S. has been unwilling for 65 years to grant its number-one ally the courtesy and respect to say, “This is your capital.”

Caroline Glick: Europe wages war on Israel: How the Jewish state must respond—This week the EU took three steps that together prove Europe’s ill-intentions towards the Jewish state. First, last Friday the EU announced it is imposing economic sanctions on Israel. The sanctions deny EU funds to Israeli entities with an address beyond the 1949 armistice lines. They also deny EU funds to Israeli entities countrywide that carry out activities beyond the 1949 armistice lines.

Eugene Kontorovich: New EU Restrictions on Israel Are about Foreign Policy, Not Law—The European Commission has published administrative guidelines that severely restrict its dealings with any Israeli company, municipality or NGO based in, or even involved in, activities east of the 1949 Armistice line, including most of Jerusalem. European officials claim international law and a concern for Palestinian self-determination demand such action. The rules also bar funding of any organization connected to the Golan Heights, which has nothing to do with “settlements” in the West Bank.

Daniel Hannan: The EU Tightens Economic Restrictions on Israel—In its latest guidelines, the EU in effect restricts its economic dealings with Israel to the pre-1967 border. It’s a bizarre decision, even by Brussels standards. By blundering in, the EU risks repeating the mistake it made in Cyprus and disincentivizing serious bilateral talks. No one seriously expects that a deal can be reached on the basis of an unaltered 1967 line (or rather, unaltered 1949 line). By putting that idea back on the table, the EU is making compromise more difficult. This isn’t really about peace, though. It’s about the EU’s natural inclination to one side of the dispute.

Soeren Kern: Did the EU Really Curb Hizbullah Funding?—In a classic European fudge, EU governments agreed only to blacklist the “military” wing of Hizbullah. Now the onus will be on European counter-terrorism police to prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that Hizbullah monies – which are often raised by entities masquerading as charities – are being expressly destined for terrorist activities rather than for “political” purposes. Because of this legal uncertainty, it remains unclear if the EU will actually target any of Hizbullah’s assets or individuals in Europe.

Eamon Delaney: Give Full Support to EU’s Ban on Hizbullah—Irish Defense Minister Alan Shatter believes there is no “difference between the armed and political wings of Hizbullah.” On a recent visit to Lebanon, he made a specific comparison with Northern Ireland, where there were “two different wings” of the Republican movement in Sinn Fein and IRA. Surely the pertinent point here is that we only dealt with Sinn Fein in a serious way precisely because its other wing, the IRA, had stopped violence and appeared to be on the way to decommissioning its weapons. Hizbullah has done no such thing. Far from it.

Avi Issacharoff: Get Jabari: Israel’s bid to nab the Hamas chief who oversaw Shalit’s capture—The intelligence was accurate. The Gaza ambush was set. But on a fateful night in 2008, Ahmed al-Jabari evaded Israel’s elite forces. And he didn’t even know it.

Shlomo Brom: No Agreement on Resumption of Israel-Palestinian Negotiations—It is important to recognize that resumption of actual negotiations has not been agreed on, and that this depends on the successful conclusion of the “talks about talks” in Washington. There are still likely to be many obstacles, such as a lack of agreement on the agenda and the order of topics to be discussed; a Palestinian demand that the Arab Peace Initiative serve as the basis for the talks; and possible differing interpretations of the understandings with Kerry, which could thwart the resumption of the negotiations.

Michael Singh: The Value of Mideast “Talks about Talks”—Preparatory negotiations of the sort Kerry has engaged in serve an important purpose. These arm’s-length negotiations allow the two sides to engage with each other and with the U.S. to gauge their counterparts’ authority and trustworthiness.

Shlomo Avineri: Needed: A Paradigm Shift in the Middle East Peace Process—The last time serious negotiations between Israel and the Palestinian Authority took place under the Olmert government no agreement was reached, despite almost two years of continuous meetings by top officials. When negotiations reached the core issues – borders-settlements, Jerusalem, refugees and security – the gaps were too wide to overcome. This is significant, as both sides at that time represented the most conceivably moderate positions, and went into negotiations with a sincere commitment to a two-state solution.

4--Scripture of the Day

Hosea 9: 8-9

Ephraim was a watchman with my God, a prophet; yet the snare of a bird catcher is in all his ways, and there is only hostility in the house of his God. They have gone deep in depravity as in the days of Gibeah; He will remember their iniquity, He will punish their sins.

14--Blessings from Revelation

Blessings in the Book of Revelation is a book that you need to read, especially now.  There are blessings throughout the Scriptures but Revelation is the only book in the Bible actually containing a specific blessing for reading it. It’s repeated twice, once at the beginning and again at the end. This is the reason that I believe Revelation should be the first step toward studying biblical prophecy. Though not easy to do, Revelation can be broken down and understood by anyone, not just the academic elite. So, Revelation’s blessings are for everyone.  Click here to order the eBook.  Click here to order the paperback.
