Ben Cohen—Kerry Must End the ‘Israel-is-to-Blame’ Game:

Which aspect of Secretary of State John Kerry’s repetition of the Arab position last week, that the Israeli-Palestinian conflict lies at the root of Middle Eastern instability, is more remarkable? The fact that Kerry could actually say such a thing, or the fact that, with the exception of theWeekly Standard, such an extraordinary claim could pass almost unnoticed in a media landscape that is rarely short of opinions about the region?

Let’s first revisit what Kerry said. After talks in Amman with Jordanian Foreign Minister Nasser Judeh and his colleagues, Kerry waxed lyrically as follows: “Peace is in the common interest of everybody in this region. And as many ministers said to me today in the meeting that we had—many of them—they said that the core issue of instability in this region and in many other parts of the world is the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.”

Think, for a moment, about that clause “in this region and in many other parts of the world…” During a week in which the total number of deaths accumulated during the civil war in Syria approached 93,000, there is something almost obscene about depicting the Israeli-Palestinian conflict as the source of regional instability.

Ruthie Blum: Negotiating the next war— On Friday, just as he was about to return to the United States from Jordan, U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry announced that he had finally gotten the Palestinian Authority and Israel to agree to resume “stalled peace talks.” His sigh of relief was almost as palpable as it was audible. After a round of media reports about imminent consent on both sides to negotiate a “two-state solution,” Kerry was desperate to make the false rumors come true. Otherwise, he was going to have to go back to Washington empty-handed and with considerable egg on his face.

Amir Taheri: Misreading the Middle East—Kerry should have read the notes left by another Democratic ex-senator, George Mitchell, who was dispatched by President Obama early in his first term with the mission to create a Palestinian state within a year. Mitchell quickly found that a peace settlement was not a priority for either protagonist. He also knew that, in his final months in office, President Bill Clinton had brokered the best deal imaginable within reason but failed to persuade Yasser Arafat to accept it.

Ron Kerman: Harming terror victims yet again— The release of convicted killers undermines all standards of justice and morality.

Prof. Abraham Ben-Zvi: The limits of mediation— No peace treaty can be signed if the sides themselves aren’t willing to cross the Rubicon.

Paul Alster: Inside Israel’s Preparation for the Next Hezbollah Conflict—Solid intelligence told the Israeli army that a Hezbollah unit was in a house in a small south Lebanese village. Infantry soldiers from the Nahal Brigade were dispatched to eliminate the Iranian-armed terrorists. Under clear, mid-summer night skies, the platoon closed in on the village. They moved stealthily across rugged terrain, down steep ravines, through the rocky scrubland then through heavily wooded brush. They had already been moving on foot for a number of hours in full battle dress, carrying their weapons and other equipment. They were hot, sweating heavily, dusty. If they felt tired, the adrenalin of such a dangerous situation kept them alert and ready.

Douglas Murray: “Occupied Territories”: What about Cyprus, Kashmir, Tibet?—Last week the EU issued a ban on funding of, or cooperation with, any Israeli institutions that operate in what it calls the “occupied territories.” There are many countries in the world with border disputes, including Cyprus, China [Tibet], and Pakistan [Kashmir]. Yet the EU has full diplomatic and trade relations with all these countries.

Matt Brooks: President Obama’s Circle of Friends—When President Obama came into office in 2009, he had big plans: close Gitmo, strengthen the economy, cut unemployment, make friends with the Muslim world, make peace in the Middle East, and bring about the day when “the rise of the oceans began to slow, and our planet began to heal…” Many of those plans, including the ones about making friends with the Muslim world and bringing peace to the Mideast, failed miserably in Obama’s first term. His second term is looking pretty tough, too. So like many an embattled president, Obama has called his old-time friends to the White House, to circle the wagons and advise him at the highest levels of government.

Michael Weiss: What’s Behind Rebel-Qaeda Tensions in Syria?—Last week was a busy one for internecine warfare among Syrian rebel groups. Yet according to Charles Lister, an analyst with IHS Jane’s Terrorism and Insurgency Center in London, “all claims of fighting have come from anti-Islamist sources and have since largely been denied or proven inaccurate by influential and well-placed sources on the ground….Fundamentally, this recent flare-up in rhetoric appears to have been a media campaign pushed by the moderate political opposition outside Syria.”

Jonathan Schanzer: Strangling Hamas—The downfall of the Muslim Brotherhood government in Egypt has been widely described as a blow to Hamas and its pocketbook. The Egyptian Army’s ongoing operations against the subterranean tunnels connecting Egypt to Gaza are wreaking havoc on Hamas’ finances. Funding from Tehran has dropped off precipitously since the civil war in Syria prompted Hamas to loosen its ties to the “Axis of Resistance.”

Joseph Klein: The Brotherhood’s Reach For Jihad— The Muslim Brotherhood continues to dig in its heels, refusing any role in the new government while insisting on Morsi’s restoration to power and the return of his Islamist constitution. Followers are continuing their protest demonstrations. A Muslim Brotherhood leader also called on Egyptians to besiege the U.S. Embassy in Cairo to protest what Morsi supporters claim was U.S. support for his removal.

4--Scripture of the Day

Hosea 9: 1-3

Do not rejoice, O Israel, with exultation like the nations! For you have played the harlot, forsaking your God. You have loved harlots’ earnings on every threshing floor. Threshing floor and wine press will not feed them, and the new wine will fail them. They will not remain in Yahweh’s land, but Ephraim will return to Egypt, and in Assyria they will eat unclean food.

14--Blessings from Revelation

Blessings in the Book of Revelation is a book that you need to read, especially now.  There are blessings throughout the Scriptures but Revelation is the only book in the Bible actually containing a specific blessing for reading it. It’s repeated twice, once at the beginning and again at the end. This is the reason that I believe Revelation should be the first step toward studying biblical prophecy. Though not easy to do, Revelation can be broken down and understood by anyone, not just the academic elite. So, Revelation’s blessings are for everyone.  Click here to order the eBook.  Click here to order the paperback.
