Steven Plaut: Giving Up the Temple Mount?:

The Temple Mount in Jerusalem is the holiest place on earth according to Judaism.  It is where both Biblical Temples stood, whose destruction is commemorated this week with fasting and mourning on the Ninth day of the month of Av according to the religious calendar.  The Western Wall is considered holy only because of its proximity to the Temple Mount.  Jews everywhere in the world pray while facing the Temple Mount, and if they were to pray on the Mount itself they would face the Holy of Holies, the singularity point in between the cherubs that were positioned on top of the Temple Ark inside the Temple.  While God’s presence is everywhere, according to Judaism, its most intense concentration is at that point.  The Western Wall is simply the guard wall around the perimeter of the Temple Mount, and is of Herodian (Roman) origin standing upon earlier Hasmonean foundations.

The site has religious significance for Christians as well.  After the destruction of the Second Temple, churches were sometimes erected there. When the Muslims conquered the area, they followed the practice of building mosques or proclaiming as sacred to Islam the religious sites of other religions.  The Muslim general Umar bin al-Khattab was the second Caliph and led the armies of Islam.  In his writings he expressed scorn for Jerusalem and never acknowledged its sanctity.  When a temporary mosque was erected on the Temple Mount (long pre-dating the current Al-Aqsa mosque structure),  it was placed in the southern edge of the Mount.  A general in the armies of Umar, an ex-Jew who had converted to Islam, pointed out to Umar that placing the mosque in the northern section of the Mount would allow Muslims to pray while facing both the Holy of Holies of the Jews and Mecca.  Umar insisted that it be placed on the southern margin so that Muslims would pray facing Mecca but with their backsides toward the Holy of Holies.  That is where the Al-Aqsa mosque stands today.

Cnaan Liphshiz: EU restrictions will likely change nothing on the ground— The intensity with which Israel reacted this week to new European guidelines prohibiting support for projects based in disputed territories surprised not only EU diplomats, but also their Israeli counterparts. The guidelines, which preclude already nonexistent EU grants to Israeli entities in the West Bank, Gaza Strip, Golan Heights and East Jerusalem, prompted Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to convene an emergency meeting and release a sardonic statement telling Europe to butt out and go deal with Syria or Iran.

Herb Keinon: PA’s Hesitance Comes from Grassroots—The PLO’s failure to grasp the Kerry offer is the Palestinian leadership responding to its grassroots. The well-intentioned Kerry invested a lot of time and effort getting the Arab League on board and behind his initiative. Kerry thought that Arab League backing would impress the Palestinians, but it simply does not matter.

Alan Baker: The European Union – Hypocrisy, Hostility and Blatant Prejudice—The publication of guidelines by the European Commission on the eligibility of Israeli entities for EU cooperation is the culmination of a concerted policy initiative led by the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs, Catherine Ashton, directed against Israel’s settlements in Judea and Samaria [the West Bank] to press the Israeli government into making territorial and political concessions.

Khaled Abu Toameh: Egypt Punishes the Palestinians—The Palestinians have a long history of meddling in the internal affairs of Arab countries, even if that always proves to be counterproductive and harmful to Palestinian interests. Now, the new rulers of Egypt are extremely angry with the Palestinians, especially Hamas, for supporting Morsi and the Muslim Brotherhood.

Ruthie Blum: Peres, Kerry and the EU— The U.S. has given a green light to Europe to proceed with its pernicious program to delegitimize the Jewish state.

Dan Margalit: Trial balloons in the air— Negotiations are looming, and any postponement or diversion from this path is because leaders on both sides struggle to look at reality from eye level.

Boaz Bismuth: Palestinians playing hard to get— As has been said many times before, the Palestinians never miss an opportunity to miss an opportunity.

Joseph Braude: For Insight into Mideast, Tune into Ramadan TV—In the Middle East, Ramadan is the most high-stakes period for hundreds of satellite channels in 21 Arab countries. A traditional mainstay of Ramadan TV has been programming depicting Jews as hook-nosed spillers of blood who want to enslave the world, starting with Muslims. This year, one Qatari-backed historical drama, “Khaybar,” shows why a Jewish tribe in seventh-century Arabia deserved to be slaughtered by Muslims and recreates the carnage. But early ratings show “Khaybar” to be a commercial flop. This year’s most popular shows don’t focus on an external enemy but on current intra-Arab issues.

Moshe Arens: Long is the road to true democracy— In history there are no examples of instant establishment of true democracy in societies that don’t have a tradition of democratic rule, democratic institutions, the rule of law, and respect for the individual and his rights. Evidently a transition period stretching over years, sometimes generations, often accompanied by violent convulsions, is required before societies that have been under autocratic rule for many years adapt to the political culture that characterizes modern-day democracies.

Barry Shaw: Jews under siege.— We have arrived at the moment that most of us reckoned we would ever see. Jews were prevented from praying at the Temple Mount on Tisha Be-Av, which commemorates the double destruction of the Jewish Temple in Jerusalem by the Babylonians and the Romans. The jury is still out as to whether the Israeli Government took this step out of respect for angry Muslims, or out of fear of angry Muslims.  Either way, Jews were prevented from carrying out their religious obligations on one of Judaism’s most solemn days to assuage the feelings of Palestinian Arabs and Muslim outrage. On the same day of Tisha Be-Av, one of the most sorrowful days in the Jewish calendar, the European Union announced an official policy of banning and restricting the products of Jewish industry from the heartland of Israel, including Jerusalem. How often have European diplomats and politicians wrongly forecast events occurring in the Middle East?

4--Scripture of the Day

Hosea 8: 7-8

“For they sow the wind and they reap the whirlwind. The standing grain has no heads; it yields no grain. Should it yield, strangers would swallow it up. Israel is swallowed up; they are now among the nations like a vessel in which no one delights.”

14--Blessings from Revelation

Blessings in the Book of Revelation is a book that you need to read, especially now.  There are blessings throughout the Scriptures but Revelation is the only book in the Bible actually containing a specific blessing for reading it. It’s repeated twice, once at the beginning and again at the end. This is the reason that I believe Revelation should be the first step toward studying biblical prophecy. Though not easy to do, Revelation can be broken down and understood by anyone, not just the academic elite. So, Revelation’s blessings are for everyone.  Click here to order the eBook.  Click here to order the paperback.
