Richard Mather—Europe’s Obsession with the Palestinians:

In the past few days, two very high-profile figures have spoken out about the dangers of anti-Semitism. Both Prince Charles and Pope Francis have expressed concern that Judeophobia is a growing problem in Britain and Europe.

In a speech praising the outgoing British chief rabbi, Lord Sacks, the Prince of Wales warned that Britain was suffering from an “apparent rise in anti-Semitism, along with other poisonous and debilitating forms of intolerance.”

Meanwhile, Pope Francis has condemned anti-Semitism, calling it unchristian. “Because of our commons roots, a true Christian cannot be anti-Semitic,” he said at a meeting with representatives of the international Jewish community at the Vatican.

These comments come at a time when anti-Semitism is running high in Britain and Europe. A new report, conducted on behalf of the European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights, found that 26% of Jews in Europe have suffered anti-Semitic harassment at least once in the past year, while 34% experienced harassment in the past five years.

4--Scripture of the Day

Hosea 5: 1-2

Hear this, O priests! Give heed, O house of Israel! Listen, O house of the king! For the judgment applies to you, for you have been a snare at Mizpah and a net spread out on Tabor. The revolters have gone deep in depravity, but I will chastise all of them.

His Name is Yahweh explains why the Name of God, Yahweh, is so important.  It’s available in eBook format and in paperback.  It’s also available for free in PDF format.

  • God also said to Moses, “Say to the Israelites, ‘Yahweh, the God of your fathers—the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob—has sent me to you.’ This [Yahweh] is my name forever, the name by which I am to be remembered from generation to generation.” (Exodus 3: 15)
  • “Therefore behold, I am going to make them know—this time I will make them know My power and My might; and they shall know that My name is Yahweh.” (Jeremiah 16: 21)
  • “Behold, the days are coming,” declares Yahweh, “when I will raise up for David a righteous Branch; and He will reign as king and act wisely and do justice and righteousness in the land.  In His days Judah will be saved, and Israel will dwell securely; and this is His name by which He will be called, ‘Yahweh our righteousness.’” (Jeremiah 23: 5-6)
  • Yeshua said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was born, I am.” (John 8: 58)

13--Perspectives

#####

Dan Margalit: Kerry avoiding the blame game— Thirteen years ago, when the Israeli-Palestinian peace talks in Camp David deadlocked, then-United States President Bill Clinton interviewed on Channel 2 and told journalist Ehud Yaari, in no uncertain terms, that Palestinian Authority Chairman Yasser Arafat was to blame. It was the first time the U.S. veered from its usually neutral position and took a clear stand on the matter. It took a long time for Yossi Ginosar (who served as then-Prime Minister Ehud Barak’s envoy) and Meretz Chairman Yossi Sarid to recover from the American statement and blame Barak for the summit’s disappointing results.

Eli Hazan: Kerry vs. Palestinian obstinacy— The efforts of U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry to renew negotiations between Israel and the Palestinian Authority are deserving of much appreciation and should be taken seriously. Apart from the desire to promote dialogue between Israel and the Palestinian Authority, the efforts have additional value: they may contribute to the strengthening of ties with Jordan. However, while it seems that Israel is placing great importance on renewing diplomatic talks and jump-starting the process, within the Palestinian Authority there is a fear of coming to the discussion table. That is why the Palestinians are setting unacceptable preconditions.

Raphael Ahren: Almost there, Mr. Secretary? Really?— When you’re the US secretary of state, you’ve visited the Middle East five times in less than four months, you can’t get Israelis and Palestinians to so much as sit down together, and yet you’re still claiming success is just around the corner, you must really have confidence in yourself. “I’m pleased to tell you that we have made real progress on this trip,” the indefatigable John Kerry told some highly dubious reporters on Sunday at a press conference before flying out of Ben Gurion Airport. “And I believe that with a little more work, the start of final-status negotiations could be within reach. We started out with very wide gaps, and we have narrowed those considerably.”

Boaz Bismuth: Tahrir Square, Egypt’s true parliament— After a too-short period of democracy following the ouster of Hosni Mubarak, Tahrir Square remains Egypt’s true parliament. That is where no-confidence votes are held against the president. Mubarak was first, but on Sunday it was Mohammed Morsi’s turn to feel the wrath of the masses, who held up a red card with the demand, “Leave!” The opposition has called on demonstrators to remain on the streets until Morsi leaves the presidential palace. They have already been spreading revolution, even issuing announcements with titles like “Revolutionary Message Number One.” But, at least on the surface, Morsi has shown no willingness to give up.

Xavier Lerma: Putin throws down ObamaNot so fast Mr. Hope and Change. Haven’t you heard? There’s a new Sheriff in town in the Middle East. President Putin reminded Barry that he’s in charge. He already reminded Netanyahu recently after Israel fired into Damascus in early May. Afterward, Bibi sang a different tune. Putin’s talent as a Judo expert is always useful in these situations. When Obama was continually arming Syrian rebels; declaring no fly zones and moving his Marines into Jordan Putin took quick action. Obama sang a different tune as well and even said, “and finally we compared notes on President Putin’s expertise in Judo and my declining skills in basketball”.

Yossi Beilin: When it comes to Diaspora Jews, tread lightly— It’s hard to say what will become of the proposed Basic Law: Israel as the Nation-State of the Jewish People. Perhaps one of the coalition parties will succeed in persuading the prime minister that it has to do with religion and state and he should thus veto it.Or the proposed law could become a contentious issue, with proponents accusing all its objectors of post-Zionism, lack of patriotism and denial of their Judaism. All of us would become embroiled in a pointless, unnecessary battle.

Efraim Zuroff: Nazis in their nineties: not too old for justice—Two unusual news stories published this month regarding Nazi war criminals living in two different continents sent a powerful and somewhat surprising message regarding the ongoing search for the perpetrators of the Holocaust and related crimes committed by the collaborators of the Third Reich. The first story, which was researched and written by Associated Press Berlin bureau chief Dave Rising and reporters Randy Herschaft in New York and Monika Scislowska in Warsaw, broke two weeks ago and was datelined Minneapolis, Minnesota, where a Ukrainian Nazi collaborator named Michael Karkoc currently resides. The second story was published five days later out of Budapest, where Nazi collaborator Laszlo Csatary was charged by Hungarian prosecutors in connection with his role in the deportation of approximately 15,700 Jews from the city of Kosice (then under Hungarian occupation, today Slovakia) and its environs to the Auschwitz-Birkenau death camp in the spring of 1944.

Ben Cohen: Nelson Mandela and Zionism— Over the last few weeks, there has been much reflection on the legacy of the former South African president, Nelson Mandela, as his health has deteriorated. And in the coming weeks, we can anticipate a febrile exchange over his true views on Israel and the Middle East.

Udi Dekel and Orit Perlov: Sinai: Implications of the Security Challenges for Egypt and Israel: Egyptian Discourse on the Social Networks, June 2013— On Thursday, May 16, 2013, seven Egyptian soldiers were kidnapped in El Arish in northern Sinai. According to the Egyptian press, the kidnappers belonged to a Salafi jihadist group affiliated with al-Qaeda. Sheikh Muhammad al-Zawahiri, an Egyptian Salafist cleric and the brother of al-Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahiri, announced the kidnappers’ demands for the release of several prisoners who were held as terrorists and tortured at al-Tura prison.

P. David Hornik: Egypt Erupts— Sunday marked Mohamed Morsi’s first anniversary as president of Egypt. By evening it was clear—if there had been any doubt left—that he had little to celebrate. Already on Saturday, amid mounting violence, Morsi’s Muslim Brotherhood had had to whisk him away to safety amid reports that protesters planned to march on his presidential palace. At least eight people, including a young American man, had already been killed in demonstrations. Offices of the Brotherhood’s political arm, the Freedom and Justice Party, had been set on fire in the cities of Alexandria and Dakahlia.

14--Blessings from Revelation

Blessings in the Book of Revelation is a book that you need to read, especially now.  There are blessings throughout the Scriptures but Revelation is the only book in the Bible actually containing a specific blessing for reading it. It’s repeated twice, once at the beginning and again at the end. This is the reason that I believe Revelation should be the first step toward studying biblical prophecy. Though not easy to do, Revelation can be broken down and understood by anyone, not just the academic elite. So, Revelation’s blessings are for everyone.  Click here to order the eBook.  Click here to order the paperback.
