Jesus Explained the Law and the Prophets

Most of the Jewish religious leaders in Jesus’ day saw Him as a renegade and as a vagabond preacher.  To them His teaching seemed peculiar because it focused on faith in Yahweh, obedience to His Word, and love for our fellowman.  But Jesus did not minimize the importance of the Law and the prophets.  He clarified both by explaining precisely what Yahweh meant.  For example, He said,

“You have heard that it was said (in the Law), ‘You shall not commit adultery’; but I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart.’”[i]

Jesus made it clear that Yahweh expects far more from us than most of us realize.  In His Sermon on the Mount,[ii] He explained why He came into the world:

“Do not think that I came to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I did not come to abolish but to fulfill.  For truly I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not the smallest letter or stroke shall pass from the Law until all is fulfilled.”[iii]

And in another place, He said,

“But it is easier for heaven and earth to pass away than for one stroke of a letter of the Law to fail.”[iv]

This fact is irrefutable.  Jesus elevated the Law and the prophets by saying they are error free.  His death for our sins was part of Yahweh’s plan all along.  It was spelled out clearly in the Law and foretold by the prophets.  In reality, Jesus’ atoning sacrifice fulfilled the Law and ratified the New Covenant.
