We Have Created an Unsustainable Welfare State
We are approaching a tipping point in the United States where the majority of our citizens will contribute nothing toward national defense, education, and the myriad social programs that have been set up to support people who pay no taxes. In fact, we may have reached the tipping point already.
The numbers are frightening. In 2008,
- the top 1% of earners in the United States paid 38% of federal income taxes;
- the top 5% of earners paid 59% of federal income taxes;
- the top 10% of earners paid 70% of federal income taxes;
- the top 25% of earners paid more than 86% of federal income taxes;
- the top 50% of earners paid more than 97% of federal income taxes;
- and the bottom 50% of earners in the United States paid less than 3% of federal income taxes.
In 2009, the top 10 percent of earners in the United States paid about 73 percent of federal income taxes, and about 47 percent of our fellow citizens paid no federal income taxes. In 2009, the bottom 40 percent of earners actually made a profit on tax day because they got more money back from the federal government than they paid in.
When people who pay no taxes and receive the lion’s share of the benefits represent the majority, you can expect them to vote in their own self-interest, and what will that be? They will vote for candidates like Barack Obama who promise to continue funding programs that funnel money to them and to tax the rich to pay for the programs. In the process, they will destroy this nation. Our nation’s deficit and debt problems make it perfectly clear that their influence is being felt already, and as I said, we may have reached the point of no return. If Barack Obama is re-elected, the end of the United States as we know it may be in sight. That’s why I believe the 2012 presidential election is the most important election in our nation’s history. We have our work cut out for us. If we don’t change course now, we may seal our nation’s fate.
As Democratic politicians pump up their rhetoric about “fairness” and play the class warfare game to curry favor with voters, keep these things in mind. Our current trajectory leads to insolvency. We engage in wild-eyed deficit spending and pretend that there are no consequences; we have piled up almost $15 trillion of debt; and we are forecasting huge deficits as far as the eye can see. This can’t continue. Our creditors will make sure that they don’t if we fail to take action ourselves.
A friend and regular SnyderTalk reader sent me an email after reading one of my editorials. In the editorial, I focused on the inherent danger we face as a nation because very soon a majority of our fellow citizens will pay no federal income taxes at all. My friend who is a Democrat, an Obama supporter, and a businessman from Texas told me that I need to broaden my focus and zero in on things like
- subsidies to farmers,
- bank bailouts,
- military subcontractors who overcharge taxpayers by billions of dollars,
- cattle rancher subsidies,
- oil subsidies, and
- lack of fair tariffs on goods brought into this country by corporations that have their products made overseas.
He’s right. We need a complete overhaul. We need tax reform and spending reform from top to bottom. We can’t continue to spend money we don’t have on things we don’t need, and we can’t tax the rich into oblivion while we transfer their wealth to the poor. I use the word “poor” with great hesitation since 50% of our fellow citizens are NOT POOR. Most of them are simply freeloading. I think that’s the most important danger we face since the welfare mindset and the freeloader mindset are passed on to children, and we create a generational problem with which we must contend. Truth is we’ve already done it.
My friend also said, “If you leave it up to politicians of both parties, it (significant change) will never happen.” He’s right again. There is plenty of blame to go around. Both Republicans and Democrats created the mess we’re in, and trusting career politicians to fix the system is like trusting the fox to guard the henhouse. To say the least, it’s fraught with risk.
Barack Obama is a perfect example of a career politician. He has never done anything substantive in his life except hold public office, and those who voted for him for president looking for hope and change got neither. His administration is worse than the same old same old. He’s trying to remake our free enterprise system into a socialist system that’s destined to fail. I say “destined to fail” since socialism has failed everyplace it’s been tried.
There will be kicking and screaming when we reform our system, but we can’t maintain the status quo and survive as a nation. Barack Obama has done nothing to help solve our problems. In fact, he has made them worse. His liberal progressive socialist agenda and his demagoguery may work in Chicago, but it doesn’t work in the rest of the country and it won’t solve our problems.
This is an excerpt from If You Voted for Obama in 2008 to Prove You’re Not a Racist, You Need to Vote for Someone Else in 2012 to Prove You’re Not an Idiot. You need to buy the book, read it, and share it. Don’t take anything for granted. If we fail to do our job, we will get four more years of Obama. Click here to order the eBook. Lamentations 1: 7-8
In the days of her affliction and homelessness Jerusalem remembers all her precious things that were from the days of old, when her people fell into the hand of the adversary and no one helped her. The adversaries saw her, they mocked at her ruin. Jerusalem sinned greatly, therefore she has become an unclean thing. All who honored her despise her because they have seen her nakedness; even she herself groans and turns away.

His Name is Yahweh explains why the Name of God, Yahweh, is so important. It’s available in eBook format and in paperback.
- God also said to Moses, “Say to the Israelites, ‘Yahweh, the God of your fathers—the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob—has sent me to you.’ This [Yahweh] is my name forever, the name by which I am to be remembered from generation to generation.” (Exodus 3: 15)
- “Therefore behold, I am going to make them know—this time I will make them know My power and My might; and they shall know that My name is Yahweh.” (Jeremiah 16: 21)
- “Behold, the days are coming,” declares Yahweh, “when I will raise up for David a righteous Branch; and He will reign as king and act wisely and do justice and righteousness in the land. In His days Judah will be saved, and Israel will dwell securely; and this is His name by which He will be called, ‘Yahweh our righteousness.’” (Jeremiah 23: 5-6)

Stand! is a suspense novel that exposes the lies, corruption, and greed underlying the theory that man-made CO2 emissions are responsible for global warming. Professor Wes Carlyle and Karen Sterling, his research collaborator, carefully scan the audience for their would-be attacker—a member of the enviro-gestapo who has been following them for days. Wes spots his man in the back of the room leaning against the wall. Suddenly, another man in the audience steps forward and moves toward Karen at a menacing pace. With a vicious stroke, he swings a billy club at her head. Click here to order the eBook. Click here to order the paperback.

Blessings in the Book of Revelation is a book that you need to read, especially now. There are blessings throughout the Scriptures but Revelation is the only book in the Bible actually containing a specific blessing for reading it. It’s repeated twice, once at the beginning and again at the end. This is the reason that I believe Revelation should be the first step toward studying biblical prophecy. Though not easy to do, Revelation can be broken down and understood by anyone, not just the academic elite. So, Revelation’s blessings are for everyone. Click here to order the eBook.
