Don’t Impose Your Limitations on God

I taught leadership at UVA for more than two decades, and I’ve led hundreds of executive seminars on the subject.  I’ve also written two books on leadership and consulted with people in business and government.  One simple fact stands out as I consider the evidence gleaned from my experience.  Every one of us is afflicted by the same arrogance gene.  We think we understand things perfectly most of the time, even though the evidence tells us otherwise.

I used a couple of exercises in my classes and seminars to drive this point home.  The first one involved asking participants to describe what they saw in the picture below.  Their responses ran the gamut.  Some of them saw a kitten; others saw a satellite photograph of the earth; still others saw a telescopic photograph of the moon; while others saw a lady’s face.

Then I would ask, “Does anyone see a cow in the picture?”  Typically, 1 in 10 people can see the cow in the picture on their own, and 1 in 10 people will never see it.  I can’t explain why.  After I outlined the cow for the group, 8 out of 10 people who could not see it on their own would say, “I see it, I see it.”

Once you’ve seen the cow in the picture, it’s virtually impossible not to see it, and it really is a picture of a cow.  It’s not a good picture, though.  If it were, the exercise wouldn’t work.  You’ll find the picture at the end of this SnyderTalk post with the cow’s face outlined and circled.

It took one more question to make my point.  I asked someone in the group who thought she saw a satellite photograph, for instance, what the picture was before she saw the cow.  Without fail, she (or he) would say, “Before I saw the cow, it was a satellite photograph.”

My response was slow and deliberate: “It was a picture of a cow all the time, and your seeing it did not make it what it is.”

This exercise had a powerful impact.  There is a reality over which we have no control, and it is not dependent on our seeing it.  If we hope to achieve our goals, our decisions must be consistent with reality.

If your traditions and assumptions about reality are off-base or incorrect and you persist in spite of that fact, eventually you will fail.  In the short-run, you may be able to convince some or even most people that your view is correct, but reality will win in the end.  Therefore, you should be willing to change course when new and/or better information indicates that you are wrong.

For some people, having to admit they are wrong is a fate worse than death.  As I said, arrogance is a serious problem with which we must come to grips.  If we don’t, we will not be able to achieve the goals God set for us.

Jeremiah 51: 16-19

When He utters His voice, there is a tumult of waters in the heavens, and He causes the clouds to ascend from the end of the earth; He makes lightning for the rain and brings forth the wind from His storehouses.  All mankind is stupid, devoid of knowledge; every goldsmith is put to shame by his idols, for his molten images are deceitful, and there is no breath in them.  They are worthless, a work of mockery; in the time of their punishment they will perish.  The portion of Jacob is not like these; for the Maker of all is He, and of the tribe of His inheritance; Yahweh Sabaoth is His name.

His Name is Yahweh explains why the Name of God, Yahweh, is so important.  It’s available in eBook format and in paperback.

  • God also said to Moses, “Say to the Israelites, ‘Yahweh, the God of your fathers—the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob—has sent me to you.’ This [Yahweh] is my name forever, the name by which I am to be remembered from generation to generation.” (Exodus 3: 15)
  • “Therefore behold, I am going to make them know—this time I will make them know My power and My might; and they shall know that My name is Yahweh.” (Jeremiah 16: 21)
  • “Behold, the days are coming,” declares Yahweh, “when I will raise up for David a righteous Branch; and He will reign as king and act wisely and do justice and righteousness in the land.  In His days Judah will be saved, and Israel will dwell securely; and this is His name by which He will be called, ‘Yahweh our righteousness.’” (Jeremiah 23: 5-6)

Opinions:

  • Ed Morrissey: Chaffetz: Why won’t the White House let us talk to Fast & Furious witness?—A duly constituted Congressional panel has requested to speak to a material witness in an ongoing investigation.  The witness himself has indicated through his attorney that he’s willing to testify under oath.  So what could possibly go wrong?
  • Tina Korbe: Congressional Black Caucus Chair calls “war on women” rhetoric “wrong”—Missouri Democratic Rep. Emanuel Cleaver today defended the president’s Christianity and said it makes no sense to accuse him of waging a “war on religion.” His remarks — presumably inadvertently — led him to also denounce…
  • Examiner Editorial: Examiner Editorial: For Obama, green is the color of money wasted on more Solyndras— Last week, as President Obama delivered his economic speech deriding the so-called “trickle-down” economic policies that created 16 million jobs under President Reagan, his Energy Department was preparing to announce the next stage of a policy that may…
  • Hugh Hewitt: Two terrible weeks for Obama— Of the many possible interpretations of President Obama’s erratic behavior of the past two weeks, the most benign is that he is simply and thoroughly overwhelmed by the office he holds.  The other is that he is reaping what he sowed.
  • Gregory Kane: Trayvon would have made Jesse Jackson nervous— There he was, at a recent rally for Trayvon Martin in Miami, standing only yards from Sybrina Fulton, Martin’s mother.  His face is the last one that should have been there. I’m talking about none other than the Revvum Jesse Jackson.
  • Timothy P. Carney: Obama’s Justice Department wages war on pro-lifers— Justly regarded as the most aggressive abortion defender to ever occupy the White House, President Obama has spent two years prosecuting pro-life advocates, using the Department of Justice as his weapon.
  • Conn Carroll: Give Obama what he wants: Pick Ryan— “Mitt Romney called the Ryan budget … marvelous,” President Obama campaign press secretary Ben LaBolt said last Tuesday of Rep. Paul Ryan’s budget plan. “This really is the Ryan-Romney budget.”
  • Hayley Peterson: Romney battling to win back women— In the general election battle for female voters, Republican Mitt Romney’s campaign is testing a new strategy contrasting Ann Romney and her brood of boys against President Obama’s family of girls.
  • Michael Barone: Barone: Can Romney show that Obama is out of date?— Time for a post-mortem on the race for the Republican presidential nomination.
  • Mike Adams: The Frequent Bomber Program—Dear Bill (Ayers): I try not to use the word “jack***” too often. Whenever I start writing about you, however, that word just seems to fit into every sentence – sort of like Selah fits into a Davidic Psalm.
  • Star Parker: Republican Challenge With Blacks and Hispanics—With black and Hispanic voters seemingly ensconced with the Democrats – Barack Obama won 95 percent of the black vote and 67 percent of the Hispanic vote in 2008 – is there anything Republicans can do to turn around what seems to be an inevitable train wreck for their Party?
  • John Ransom: For This Old Socialist, Maxine Waters, Socialism Starts at Home—What Maxine was trying to say, yet not say at the same time, was that she would be all about socializing the oil industry, like her friend Hugo Chavez did down in Venezuela. Now she can’t wait until she gets a crack at, uh, uh, uh, Wall Street.
  • Larry Kudlow: Romney’s in a Sweet Spot if . . .—If the Supreme Court overthrows the individual mandate, doesn’t Mitt Romney say “I told you so” and emerge as the big political winner?
  • Lurita Doan: Obama’s Fraud—The recent exposé of clowns and mind-readers as critical support elements of government training at a U.S. General Services (GSA) conference in Las Vegas has served as a politically expedient way for Barack Obama to pretend to be tough on the issue of wasteful spending.
  • Dan Holler: President Obama Is Not Pro-Choice—But while Obama strategists talk about presenting voters with a choice, the political reality is such that their only chance to win in November is to make the election a referendum on the other guy. President Obama and his advisors are anti-choice because they understand a sharp contrast – one that puts their record up against a conservative vision for America – is also likely to fail.
  • Mike Shedlock: Union Label Stuck to $137 Billion in Illinois State Debt—Illinois has combined $137 billion in pension and healthcare liabilities on top of $9 billion in current unpaid bills. Yet, Illinois legislators will not even ask 6-figure pensioners to pick up a portion of their health premiums.
  • Fred Hiatt: Why freedom is low on the agenda—Obama has missed obvious chances to help promote democracy.
  • Robert Samuelson: Would FDR recognize Social Security?—Would Franklin Roosevelt approve of Social Security? The question seems absurd. After all, Social Security is considered the New Deal’s signature achievement. It distributes nearly $800 billion a year to 56 million retirees, survivors and disabled beneficiaries. On average, retired workers and spouses receive $1,839 a month — money vital to the well-being of millions. Roosevelt would surely be proud of this, and yet he might also have reservations. Social Security has evolved into something he never intended and actively opposed.

Blessings in the Book of Revelation is a book that you need to read, especially now.  There are blessings throughout the Scriptures but Revelation is the only book in the Bible actually containing a specific blessing for reading it. It’s repeated twice, once at the beginning and again at the end. This is the reason that I believe Revelation should be the first step toward studying biblical prophecy. Though not easy to do, Revelation can be broken down and understood by anyone, not just the academic elite. So, Revelation’s blessings are for everyone.  Click here to order the eBook.  Click here to order the paperback.

Falsely Accused is a true story about a young woman who was accused of committing a double homicide.  It’s about a travesty of justice, and it reveals Yahweh intervening in the life of a believer to rescue her from danger in the face of seemingly insurmountable odds.  Everyone will enjoy the book, but young people in particular need to read it because the mistakes made that led to the problem could have been avoided.  They were the kinds of mistakes that young people are prone to make.  As they say, forewarned is forearmed.  Click here to order the eBook.  Click here to order the paperback.
