This is an excerpt from What Will You Do with the Rest of Your Life? It is available in eBook format and in paperback.
Events that you can’t control influence the value of your assets in profound ways, and there is nothing you can do about it. Careful investing will help to reduce your risk, but even prudent investing can’t insulate you completely from the vagaries of the market.
For example, consider these factors:
- Rapid increases or decreases in energy prices,
- increasing or decreasing interest rates,
- top managers at companies who commit fraud,
- economic turmoil in China or Southeast Asia or Europe, and
- terrorist attacks in Europe or the United States.
Unless you are a high government official or a top executive, these things are outside of your zone of influence, and this is a very short list of variables that cause the value of your assets to rise or fall. Your net worth can nose-dive or take off like a rocket in a matter of days, and it has nothing to do with you.
Again, you can reduce your risk by investing wisely, but you can’t insulate yourself completely from market volatility unless you hide your money in a mattress. In the long-run, that is the riskiest investment strategy of all.
Investing in God’s people is another matter. Those investments pay dividends for many years and have the potential to affect untold numbers of other people in ways you can only imagine. Just as important, those investments are not influenced by economic volatility because God never changes. He will continue to bless our investments in people no matter what the financial markets are doing.

Jeremiah 40: 7-8
Now all the commanders of the forces that were in the field, they and their men, heard that the king of Babylon had appointed Gedaliah the son of Ahikam over the land and that he had put him in charge of the men, women and children, those of the poorest of the land who had not been exiled to Babylon. So they came to Gedaliah at Mizpah, along with Ishmael the son of Nethaniah, and Johanan and Jonathan the sons of Kareah, and Seraiah the son of Tanhumeth, and the sons of Ephai the Netophathite, and Jezaniah the son of the Maacathite, both they and their men.

Falsely Accused is a true story about a young woman who was accused of committing a double homicide. It’s about a travesty of justice, and it reveals Yahweh intervening in the life of a believer to rescue her from danger in the face of seemingly insurmountable odds. Everyone will enjoy the book, but young people in particular need to read it because the mistakes made that led to the problem could have been avoided. They were the kinds of mistakes that young people are prone to make. As they say, forewarned is forearmed. Click here to order the eBook. Click here to order the paperback.

His Name is Yahweh explains why the Name of God, Yahweh, is so important. It’s available in eBook format and in paperback.
God also said to Moses, “Say to the Israelites, ‘Yahweh, the God of your fathers—the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob—has sent me to you.’ This [Yahweh] is my name forever, the name by which I am to be remembered from generation to generation.”
Exodus 3: 15
