The dollar’s days as the global reserve currency are numbered.
First, Iran called for replacing the dollar as the global reserve currency. That comes as no surprise since Iran considers the US to be the Great Satan. When the fed initiated quantitative easing, China joined the chorus. That’s not a surprise either. China holds about a trillion dollars of US debt, and QE is little more than a program designed to print dollars and drive up inflation.
Right now, the fed fears deflation more than inflation, so QE may make sense from a US perspective, but from China’s point of view, it’s a terrible deal. Inflating dollars means devaluing the dollar so that we pay off our debts with cheaper dollars. The losers are people and countries holding US debt.
Last week, Europe started talking openly about replacing the dollar as the global reserve currency. That is a big deal. It means that the tide is rising rapidly, and the dollar’s days as the global reserve currency are numbered.
Unfortunately, most people in the US have no idea what it means. When the dollar is no longer the global reserve currency, the effect on the US economy will be breathtaking. Commodity prices will skyrocket and inflation in the US will soar.
The simple fact that the dollar is the global reserve currency has insulated us from the full effects of those outcomes so far. QE and the unwillingness of the US Congress and presidents from both parties to deal with our debt and deficit problems virtually guarantee that the day of the dollar IS OVER.

As I said, this is a very big deal, and it foreshadows a changing of the guard, as it were, on the global stage. The day of the dollar as the global reserve currency will come to an end, and there will be a concomitant change in the global political structure as well. This is a major turning point in global events.
