SnyderTalk Editorial: Israel can’t depend on the nations for protection for reasons that are becoming increasingly obvious.

Jeremiah 12: 14-17

Thus says Yahweh concerning all My wicked neighbors who strike at the inheritance with which I have endowed My people Israel, “Behold I am about to uproot them from their land and will uproot the house of Judah from among them.  And it will come about that after I have uprooted them, I will again have compassion on them; and I will bring them back, each one to his inheritance and each one to his land.  Then if they will really learn the ways of My people, to swear by My name, ‘As Yahweh lives,’ even as they taught My people to swear by Baal, they will be built up in the midst of My people.  But if they will not listen, then I will uproot that nation, uproot and destroy it,” declares Yahweh.

Jeremiah 11: 1-5

The word which came to Jeremiah from Yahweh, saying, “Hear the words of this covenant, and speak to the men of Judah and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem; and say to them, ‘Thus says Yahweh, the God of Israel, “Cursed is the man who does not heed the words of this covenant which I commanded your forefathers in the day that I brought them out of the land of Egypt, from the iron furnace, saying, ‘Listen to My voice, and do according to all which I command you; so you shall be My people, and I will be your God,’ in order to confirm the oath which I swore to your forefathers, to give them a land flowing with milk and honey, as it is this day.”’” Then I said, “Amen, O Yahweh.”

Israel can’t depend on the nations for protection for reasons that are becoming increasingly obvious.

Last week the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) released a report that included some sobering projections:

  • Publicly held debt in the US will top 101% of GDP by 2021 using optimistic assumptions.
  • Intragovernmental debt, debt that the federal government owes to itself, is almost $5 trillion.  The Social Security Trust Fund (SSTF), for instance, is made up entirely of IOUs from the federal government.  Stated another way, there is no SSTF.  It’s just an illusion.
  • The SSFT’s unfunded liabilities are more than $18 trillion.
  • Unfunded liabilities for Medicare are almost $37 trillion.  That estimate is based on best-case scenario assumptions – something that’s not likely to happen.  Medicare’s unfunded liabilities may be as much as $90 trillion.
  • All told, our government’s debt and unfunded liabilities may exceed $120 trillion.  That’s 900% of GDP.

Our government spends too much money, and we’ve made promises that we can’t fulfill.  Those are undeniable facts.  Still our elected representatives in Washington can’t reach an agreement on spending cuts even though they are well aware that our nation is on a collision course with insolvency.

There is plenty of blame to go around, but Senator Dick Durban (D-Illinois) stands out in my mind as demonstrating the kind of shallow thinking that got us into this mess.  I see him on television almost every day, and each time he appears he explains why we can’t cut spending – not now at this particular moment.

Families across America are coming to grips with reality and getting their finances on order.  They’re cutting unnecessary spending and saving money, but Senator Durbin can’t imagine the federal government taking such a drastic step.  In Durbin’s fantasy world, spending in excess was necessary when the economy was good, and we took on trillions of dollars of debt to pay for programs that we didn’t need and couldn’t afford.  Back then he reasoned that we could afford to make those commitments because our economy was strong.  Now the economy is weak, and he thinks we can’t afford to cut programs that are leading us to a financial cliff.  In his world, there never has been and there never will be a good time to solve our spending problem.

Durbin isn’t the only senator or representative who lacks common sense, but he gets so much airtime that you can’t help but notice him.  He looks and sounds foolish as he explains that we have to continue doing what we’ve been doing even though what we’ve been doing is the problem.  He reminds me of a heroin addict who thinks that one more fix will solve his problem.  It’s lunacy, but in his world, it passes for good reasoning.

I like to connect the dots and project into the future.  When you connect the dots, you have to imagine what might happen.  For instance, the day will come when the US has to fight a war of necessity – not like the Libya War which is a war of convenience.  A war of necessity is a different breed of cat.  It’s an all-out war for survival, and that kind of war is always in the cards.  It’s just a matter of time before we have to fight one.  What will happen when our way of life is threatened, when we have to fight to protect our homes from invasion and our cities from attack?  Will we have the resources to get the job done?  It’s not likely because we depend on countries that might attack us to purchase our debt.  If we are at war with them, they won’t buy our bonds and we will be between a rock and a hard place.

This isn’t wild-eyed speculation.  It’s reasonable thinking, and if you read Defense Secretary Gate’s interview with Christian Science Monitor, you know that he has the same concerns I have.

Taking another step down the road, what will happen when, not if, we have to fight to protect our allies, a country like Israel for example.  Polls show that the American people support Israel, but how would US citizens feel if that support cost them something.  It’s similar to presidential polls.  When Barack Obama is compared with an unnamed foe, polling data shows that Obama loses in a landslide, but when you name an opponent, it’s a nip-and-tuck race.

Our feelings in the abstract aren’t our true feelings.  We won’t know where we stand as a nation until we have something to lose.  When that day comes, what will we do?  I don’t think we’ll come to Israel’s aid when she needs us for reasons that are almost entirely economic.  If I know it, you can bet that Israel’s enemies know it too.  They are doing everything they can think of to create economic conditions that undermine our support for Israel, and it’s working – especially in Europe.

This is the bottom line.  Israel can’t depend on the nations for protection for reasons that are becoming increasingly obvious.  Yahweh is her only Protector.

Joel 3: 17-21

Then you will know that I am Yahweh your God, dwelling in Zion, My holy mountain.  So Jerusalem will be holy, and strangers will pass through it no more.  And in that day the mountains will drip with sweet wine, and the hills will flow with milk, and all the brooks of Judah will flow with water; and a spring will go out from the house of Yahweh to water the valley of Shittim.  Egypt will become a waste, and Edom will become a desolate wilderness, because of the violence done to the sons of Judah, in whose land they have shed innocent blood.  But Judah will be inhabited forever and Jerusalem for all generations.  And I will avenge their blood which I have not avenged, for Yahweh dwells in Zion.
