SnyderTalk Editorial: “My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge.”

Jeremiah 12: 14-17

Thus says Yahweh concerning all My wicked neighbors who strike at the inheritance with which I have endowed My people Israel, “Behold I am about to uproot them from their land and will uproot the house of Judah from among them.  And it will come about that after I have uprooted them, I will again have compassion on them; and I will bring them back, each one to his inheritance and each one to his land.  Then if they will really learn the ways of My people, to swear by My name, ‘As Yahweh lives,’ even as they taught My people to swear by Baal, they will be built up in the midst of My people.  But if they will not listen, then I will uproot that nation, uproot and destroy it,” declares Yahweh.

Jeremiah 9: 12-16—Who is the wise man that may understand this? And who is he to whom the mouth of Yahweh has spoken, that he may declare it? Why is the land ruined, laid waste like a desert, so that no one passes through? Yahweh said, “Because they have forsaken My law which I set before them, and have not obeyed My voice nor walked according to it, but have walked after the stubbornness of their heart and after the Baals, as their fathers taught them,” therefore thus says Yahweh Sabaoth, the God of Israel, “behold, I will feed them, this people, with wormwood and give them poisoned water to drink. I will scatter them among the nations, whom neither they nor their fathers have known; and I will send the sword after them until I have annihilated them.”

“My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge.”

This quote from the Bible appears in every SnyderTalk post: “My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge.” (Hosea 4: 6)  As SnyderTalk approaches its second anniversary, I’ve started to reflect on the things I’ve learned over the past 2 years.  Number 1, I’ve become aware that there is a growing thirst for truth and knowledge, and it’s coming from countries all over the world including China, Indonesia, Iran, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey to name just a few.

If you grew up in the US, as I did, you tend to have an insular perspective.  Thankfully, my outlook started to change during my Ph.D. program.  My officemate for almost 3 years was an Iranian.  He was in the US working on his doctorate, and we spent a lot of time together in the office and playing tennis.  Since we were studying different subjects, we never had a class together.

We were officemates when the Iranian Revolution occurred in 1979 and Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini took control.  My friend wasn’t a pious Muslim, but he was a Muslim, and he was thrilled when Khomeini assumed power.  He explained to me that the SAVAK, the Iranian National Intelligence and Security Organization or the secret police of Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, Iran’s Shah, was the enforcer of the Shah’s policies.  They had agents in the US who checked up on Iranian students, and if they got out of line, they were dealt with harshly.  Brutal beatings were not out of the question, and some Iranian students who went too far according to SAVAK simply disappeared.

My friend wasn’t paranoid.  He simply knew the truth about some things that I had never heard or imagined.  We shared an office for more than a year before he would talk with me in detail about the Iranian situation, and even then he was very cautious.  When the Shah was ousted, he was relieved beyond measure, and he opened up and started telling me things that were shocking.

His animosity toward the US became apparent in a hurry.  He and his fellow countrymen blamed our government for propping up the Shah.  The Iranian people suffered at the Shah’s merciless hands for almost 40 years because the US helped him maintain his iron grip on power.  He was thrilled when the Shah was deposed and Khomeini took control.  Little did he know that the Islamic revolution that he was glad to see would produce another form of brutal tyrant – the religious variety – and they would become just as cruel as the Shah.

A year ago, I was playing golf with a friend, and a member of our foursome who was about 65 years old, college educated, and very successful told me that he met an Iranian man who explained that people in his country have high regard for the abilities of the US in some areas but that in Iran today there remains a deep-seated resentment toward our country.  The member of our foursome was surprised that the Iranians would harbor ill will toward us because he had been brought up to believe that the US is a force for good in the world, and only good.  That’s simply not true, but it’s what most Americans believe.

More than 40 years after his death, the Iranian people still remember what the Shah did and that the US made it possible.  Every Iranian citizen has first-hand recollections or they’ve heard stories about family members or friends who were brutally killed or tortured by the Shah’s henchmen, and their harsh feelings toward us don’t die quickly.  When I asked him if the Iranian mentioned SAVAK, he gave me a very strange look and said, “Yes.”  I could tell that he didn’t fully understand what SAVAK was or what it did, so I told him.  To my surprise, he was grateful that I shared the information with him, and he started quizzing me about other things.

I used the word “surprise” for a reason.  I’ve learned through bitter experience that most of my fellow countrymen don’t know much; they don’t know that they don’t know much; and worse, they don’t care about unearthing the facts.  When you try to tell them something that differs even slightly from what they believe, even though they have no real basis for their beliefs, they resent it and/or their eyes glaze over.  It would help them to realize that people across the globe are better informed than they are, even about our country.  To them, that unpleasant truth isn’t even in the realm of possibility because, after all, they are Americans and in their minds Americans know more than people from other countries.  How wrong they are.

Do you think the people of Tunisia, Egypt, Bahrain, Yemen, Libya, Pakistan, and Afghanistan, to name just a few, are different from the people of Iran?  This may shock you, but the answer is “no.”  They have all had similar experiences with the United States, and their hard feelings toward us are just beneath the surface even when we try to help them.  To put a fine point on it, they don’t trust us and for good reasons.  That’s something people in this country don’t want to hear, and they won’t get that message from Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, or Glenn Beck, for example.

I’m not picking on Limbaugh, Hannity, and Beck.  I’m just highlighting a fact.  I’m grateful to all of them for providing information that people in our country need to hear, but their breadth and depth of knowledge is limited at best.  Thankfully, they have access to information from some well-informed people and they share that information with their audiences, but they are not the source of knowledge.  They are simply repeating what they have been told, what they read in newspapers and magazines, or what they saw on television.  Again, I’m grateful for what they’re doing, but it’s not enough.  It’s not even close to enough.  If you want to be truly informed, you need to be better informed than they are.

That brings me to SnyderTalk readers.  I believe it’s true that Rush Limbaugh’s audience, for instance, is better informed than average Americans, but just slightly.  SnyderTalk readers are different.  If you read SnyderTalk on a daily basis, you’re getting information from around the world that won’t become the subject of conversation on Limbaugh, Hannity, and Beck for weeks, months, or maybe even years, and the things presented in SnyderTalk are important right now.  That should tell you something.

For example, lately Glenn Beck has devoted a lot of time to Israel, and he has a large audience so he’s making a difference.  That said, what Beck shares with his audience, as helpful as it is, is just the tip of the iceberg.  If all you know about Israel is what you get from Beck’s show, you may be better informed than most people, but you don’t know very much.  If you read SnyderTalk, you are much better informed than Beck’s followers.

Israel is the epicenter of the battle between good and evil.  It’s the place where Yahweh will eventually intervene personally to defeat His enemies.  The things we’re witnessing today in Israel and the Middle East are just prelude to that climactic event.  The battle may be over before Beck and people like him get onboard completely.  SnyderTalk readers know that, and I’m thankful for all of you.

The growth rate in SnyderTalk readership is about 300% year-over-year, and the growth rate is increasing.  Obviously, there is a hunger for information about what’s taking place in Israel, and I appreciate your turning to SnyderTalk as a source of information.  If you like what you’re getting, please share it with your friends and family.
