The Word of Yahweh:
Thus says Yahweh concerning all My wicked neighbors who strike at the inheritance with which I have endowed My people Israel, “Behold I am about to uproot them from their land and will uproot the house of Judah from among them. And it will come about that after I have uprooted them, I will again have compassion on them; and I will bring them back, each one to his inheritance and each one to his land. Then if they will really learn the ways of My people, to swear by My name, ‘As Yahweh lives,’ even as they taught My people to swear by Baal, they will be built up in the midst of My people. But if they will not listen, then I will uproot that nation, uproot and destroy it,” declares Yahweh. (Jeremiah 12: 14-17)

- Ridding Syria of a Despot
- Syria’s Assad No Longer in Vogue Take: Syria has been a repressive totalitarian state for decades. The only thing different now is that the Baathists are killing people openly. The only “peace” they seem to understand is the kind you get at the point of a gun. Just ask Israel’s leaders if you have any doubts. Would helping to bring down the Baathist regime in Syria be good for Israel? In Israel they say, “The devil you know is better than the devil you don’t know.” Is that sound reasoning? If Assad falls, who will take his place? Islamists are poised and ready to step in. You need to understand that Israel is in dire straits.
- In Obama’s Push for Mideast Peace, Whose Side Is He On? Take: Good question. From where I sit, it looks as though President Obama is not on the side of our only reliable ally in the Middle East – Israel – and Yahweh’s chosen people. King Abdullah of Jordan, our theoretical ally, explored closer ties with Iran recently. Does he see a seismic shift taking place and the US losing influence in the Middle East? Probably, because that’s what’s happening. Our ability to grease the skids with dollars is not what it used to be thanks to government policies that are bankrupting the US and driving the value of the dollar down. These are interesting times to say the least.

What’s the difference between Syria and Libya?
What’s the difference between Syria and Libya? That question has received a lot of attention since Bashar al Assad’s Baathist regime in Syria started firing on and killing demonstrators. Judging by remarks made by Secretaries Clinton and Gates on Sunday news shows, there is a world of difference between the two Muslim countries, but after listening to them, I couldn’t figure out what it is.
Let’s examine the two countries and try to understand why we decided to go to war with Libya, but we haven’t even raised our voice against Syria:
The Leaders: Muammar Kaddafi is a certifiable lunatic and a good friend with Hugo Chavez of Venezuela. He’s a former coup leader turned strongman autocrat. Bashar al Assad is a former dentist and the son of a former coup leader turned strongman autocrat (Hafez al Assad) who ruled Syria until his death. Assad is also a good friend of Hugo Chavez. The only noticeable difference between Assad and Kaddafi is that world leaders haven’t deemed Assad to be a lunatic, but they will if he continues killing his people for daring to say they don’t like living under a brutal dictatorial regime.
Resources: Libya has oil, and it’s a major supplier of oil to Europe. Assad has no oil, but he does open his country to Hamas, Hezbollah, and many other Islamist groups with menacing names. Syria’s main export is terrorism. Kaddafi tried terrorism, but it almost got him killed so he backed off. Syria continues to enable terrorists in every way it can as evidenced by its roles in Iraq and Lebanon.
Attitude Toward Israel: Both Kaddafi and Assad have adhered to the Arab line that there should be no Israel. Assad funds terrorist attacks in Israel by Hamas and Hezbollah, for instance, and has done everything he can to avoid inking a peace treaty with Israel. If Kaddafi is involved in terrorist attacks on Israel, he’s been much more circumspect than Assad since President Reagan sent him a message that he can’t forget.
From where I sit, the difference between Muammar Kaddafi and Bashar al Assad appears to be oil and the fact that Europe imports oil from Libya. I suppose it’s possible that we would be at war with Syria today too if Europeans ate more hummus. In any event, the only US stake in either Libya or Syria is the extent to which they threaten our only real ally in the Middle East – Israel. If that were the criterion we used in deciding whether we would go to war, we would be at war with Syria, not Libya.
