Isaiah 65: 22—“They will not build and another inhabit, they will not plant and another eat; for as the lifetime of a tree, so will be the days of My people, and My chosen ones will wear out the work of their hands.”

This is the Word of Yahweh:

Thus says Yahweh concerning all My wicked neighbors who strike at the inheritance with which I have endowed My people Israel, “Behold I am about to uproot them from their land and will uproot the house of Judah from among them.  And it will come about that after I have uprooted them, I will again have compassion on them; and I will bring them back, each one to his inheritance and each one to his land.  Then if they will really learn the ways of My people, to swear by My name, ‘As Yahweh lives,’ even as they taught My people to swear by Baal, they will be built up in the midst of My people.  But if they will not listen, then I will uproot that nation, uproot and destroy it,” declares Yahweh. (Jeremiah 12: 14-17)

Wisconsin Union Activists and the Mainstream Media

The NYT is not a good source for information about the brouhaha in Madison, Wisconsin involving union activists and state lawmakers trying to grapple with serious budget problems.  They would have you believe that the governor and GOP legislators are ogres and that the union militants are innocent lambs.  Nothing could be further from the truth.

While I was working on my doctorate, I did a consulting project for Pabst Brewing in Albany, Georgia.  Shortly before my assignment began, the company opened a brewing plant in the South Georgia town that created new, well-paying jobs.  Little did the community’s residents know how much their lives would change.

The new jobs were the low-skill variety requiring modest educational preparation.  Pabst brought in its own brew masters and other technical people.  Local workers performed basic assembly line operations.  For instance, they sat at their stations on the line and monitored progress, loaded cans and bottles in hoppers, loaded trucks, and a host of other menial tasks.  Pabst had hoped to take advantage of the work ethic for which the south is so well known, but they got more than they bargained for.

The good ole boys from South Georgia weren’t accustomed to a union environment, and Pabst’s unions required the company to employ only union workers in all of its plants.  Every bubba who went to work at the Albany plant was required to join the union, and they were paid union wages.  People who struggled to finish high school found work at the plant and started out making as much money as doctors and lawyers in Albany.

Immediately, Pabst’s unionized hourly workers were buying houses in Albany’s finest upscale areas.  Many of them didn’t think too much of lawn maintenance.  Attractive neighborhoods turned into eyesores overnight with high grass and old junk cars up on blocks in front yards.  Property values plummeted.

The overpaid and under skilled Pabst workers realized that with their newfound wealth they could buy almost anything they desired.  They filled their new houses with gaudy furniture; they bought boats and other pricey toys and kept them in their yards; and they spared no expense.  Why should they?  They were making more money than they ever dreamed possible.  In no time at all, they were head-over-heels in debt and struggling to make ends meet.

The jobs were tedious, and Southern boys used all of their creativity to show their frustration.  For instance, one job required a man to sit and watch cans of beer zoom by on a belt at blinding speed.  His task was to hit the “Stop the Line” switch if something went wrong with the machine that stamped tops on full cans of beer.  If he was unhappy for some reason, he would wait for several seconds before hitting the switch, and cans of beer without tops slammed into the jammed piece of equipment sending beer and cans flying through the air in all directions.  It was a sight to see.

Another person was responsible for making sure that the hopper feeding lids into the machine was full.  If he got mad or just wanted to have some fun, he would load the lids in the hopper upside-down.  The result was comical.  The pop-tops were inside the cans of beer instead of on the outside.  Needless to say, those cans of beer were worthless.

In those days, every can of beer had a tax stamp etched into the lid.  Since each state required a different stamp, it was essential to make sure that beer with a Texas stamp, for example, was loaded on a truck bound for Texas.  If beer with a South Carolina stamp was shipped to Texas, it had to be returned to Albany and reloaded on a truck heading for South Carolina.  If a good ole boy loading trucks was troubled about something, he would purposely load beer on the wrong truck.  He couldn’t have cared less because his pay had nothing to do with his performance.

I could go on writing about the kinds of problems that Pabst experienced, but there’s no need.  Let it suffice to say that the union jobs paid too much and the skill and maturity levels required of workers were too low.  That’s typical in union shops.  People are paid more than they are worth, and they don’t have to be particularly good at what they do because their income is determined by collective bargaining instead of by the quality of their effort.

This problem plagues public employee unions today.  Take teachers’ unions, for instance.  Mediocre teachers who aren’t motivated to educate students cost us a fortune.  The US ranks at or near the top in the world in terms of the cost of education per student, but we rank far down on lists where performance matters – particularly in math, science, and reading comprehension.  The teachers who called in sick so they could protest in Madison, Wisconsin are perfect examples of the problem we have in education.  They are more concerned about their bargaining rights than they are about the quality of their effort, and they don’t care if their excessive pay and benefits packages are bankrupting the state.  Finally, Wisconsin has a governor who is willing to address the problem.  The fact that Wisconsin teachers are behaving like spoiled brats should surprise no one.

Every state in the union faces similar problems.  If we continue paying more than jobs are worth and getting miserable results, we will go broke too.  It’s time for our legislators to face reality and deal with teacher performance and budget problems.  If they don’t we’re in trouble.

Unfortunately, the mainstream media hasn’t presented the facts.  They are trying to whip up emotions and convince the public that union activists are being treated unfairly.  They are so far off the mark that it’s pathetic.  We need to lend all the support we can to the governor and legislators in Wisconsin who have courageously taken on employee unions, but we can’t stop there.  We need to make sure that our state legislatures do their jobs as well.

Don’t expect the liberal progressive media to support our efforts because they won’t.  We’ll simply have to ignore them as we go about doing our work.  Thankfully, the LP mainstream media is losing its grip on the flow of information, and people are getting the message.  In time, if they don’t face reality, they will go the way of dinosaurs.
