Isaiah 59: 9-10—Therefore justice is far from us, and righteousness does not overtake us; we hope for light, but behold, darkness, for brightness, but we walk in gloom. We grope along the wall like blind men, we grope like those who have no eyes; we stumble at midday as in the twilight, among those who are vigorous we are like dead men.

Jeremiah 12: 14-17:

Thus says Yahweh concerning all My wicked neighbors who strike at the inheritance with which I have endowed My people Israel, “Behold I am about to uproot them from their land and will uproot the house of Judah from among them.  And it will come about that after I have uprooted them, I will again have compassion on them; and I will bring them back, each one to his inheritance and each one to his land.  Then if they will really learn the ways of My people, to swear by My name, ‘As Yahweh lives,’ even as they taught My people to swear by Baal, they will be built up in the midst of My people.  But if they will not listen, then I will uproot that nation, uproot and destroy it,” declares Yahweh. (Jeremiah 12: 14-17)

The secret to long-term mental health is keeping your brain active.

An op-ed piece in yesterday’s NYT was very thought provoking.  It had to do with New Year’s resolutions in general, and it focused on something that every one of us needs to think about – changing our minds. (See This Year, Change Your Mind.)  More specifically, it talked about the brain’s power to learn and the importance of giving our brains the opportunity to learn.

As a professor, if you are serious about your job, you have to learn every single day.  Each time you start a new research project, you expose yourself to things that you never knew before.  You have to take into account new issues and variables, and you end up changing your perspectives and your opinions.  That’s one of the things I liked most about being a professor, and I have done my best to take that way of doing things into my new life as a “retired” person.

Since retirement, I’ve written a novel, a self-help book, and a non-fiction piece in the true crime genre.  I’m still working on them.  One day I hope you’ll have the opportunity to see them.  I’ve also started a blog (SnyderTalk) and created a website (www.hisnameisyahweh.org).  Each one of these ventures has expanded my horizons and quickened my mind.  I have a long list of other things that I want to do, and Yahweh willing, I’ll get to them in due course.

What kinds of things might you do to broaden your horizons and work your brain?  The opportunities are limitless, but I’ll list a few simple things that anyone can do:

  1. Read a newspaper from another town.  If you read SnyderTalk, you’re already reading newspapers from Israel, and you’re getting editorial perspectives from New York, Washington, Chicago, Los Angeles, and other cities around the world, so reading SnyderTalk every day is a great New Year’s resolution.
  2. Learn a new language.  If you live in the US, learning Spanish is a good first step.
  3. Take flying lessons.  That’s one of the things I plan to do one day.
  4. Visit a country you’ve never been to before.
  5. If you are retired, take a part-time job doing something you’ve never done but always wanted to do.
  6. Take up photography.
  7. Learn to play a musical instrument.

As I said, your opportunities are limitless, so be bold.  Decide what you want to do and then go do it.  You’ll be glad you did.

As I read the article, I found myself thinking that it should be required reading for the editors and columnists at the NYT.  Maybe there is hope for them too.  I suppose it’s possible that they might open their minds to other points of view?  I wondered, Would they dare to consider the evidence and change their minds about … you name the issue?  Then it hit me that the people who need help the most are the ones least likely to recognize that they have a problem.

It’s possible for the people at the NYT to change their minds, but don’t hold your breath.  I’m not holding mine.
