Isaiah 45: 1-3—“Thus says Yahweh to Cyrus His anointed, whom I have taken by the right hand, to subdue nations before him and to loose the loins of kings; to open doors before him so that gates will not be shut: ‘I will go before you and make the rough places smooth; I will shatter the doors of bronze and cut through their iron bars. I will give you the treasures of darkness and hidden wealth of secret places, so that you may know that it is I, Yahweh, the God of Israel, who calls you by your name.’”

Shalu shalom Yerushalayim: Pray for the peace of Jerusalem. (Psalm 122: 6)

“When Yehuda Avner first joined the Israeli Foreign Service in 1959, he was the only observant Jew. ‘When I began I was the only religious fellow in the whole Foreign Service. It wasn’t easy,’ recalls Avner, 82, whose diplomatic career ended up lasting an incredible 38 years.”

Confession of a Reformed Democrat

I used to be a Democrat.  There, I’ve said it.  Confession is good for the soul, and I feel better already.

In previous SnyderTalk posts, I’ve said that I’m not a supporter of either political party.  That’s true.  I’m as independent as they come, but in my younger days, I didn’t just vote for Democrats, I was active in the Democratic Party.

In my defense, if you grew up in Georgia in the 1950s and 1960s, you didn’t have much choice.  There was a Republican Party in Georgia at that time, but it was little more than a right-wing fringe group.  I was a Democrat by default.

When I joined the University of Virginia faculty, I invited another former Georgian from Northern Virginia to speak with my strategy classes.  His name is Jim McIntyre, and at the time he was Director of the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) and a member of President Carter’s cabinet.  As quickly as news started circulating in Charlottesville that the OMB director was coming to town to talk with a bunch of UVA students, local Democrats sought me out and got me involved in the party.  I was happy to oblige.  I like Jim.  He’s levelheaded and easy to work with.  Eventually we co-authored a book titled Reducing Employee Theft.

During the 1980 presidential campaign, I was a surrogate speaker for President Carter in Virginia.  In that capacity, I toured the area with George Allen debating issues before various groups.  In due course, George became a member of Virginia’s House of Delegates, a member of the US House of Representatives, Governor of Virginia, and a member of the US Senate.  One day, George may be elected President of the United States.  He would be a good one.  I became Chuck Robb’s Policy Advisor for Regulatory Reform when he was Governor of Virginia, and I chaired and co-chaired a couple of Governor’s Conferences on Small Business in Virginia.

My work in the Governor’s Office taught me that I wasn’t a “good” Democrat.  Two things helped me see the light: abortion and welfare.  They say there are no litmus tests for membership in the Democratic Party, but that’s not true.  To advance in the Democratic Party, you have to be pro-abortion, or if you come from a state that’s vehemently opposed to abortion, you have to support a woman’s right to choose.

If you’re against abortion on demand, you don’t belong in the Democratic Party, period.  I won’t delve deeply into the abortion issue in this editorial, but I will say this.  The Democratic Party has used “abortion on demand” to galvanize their base and maintain a firm grip on people who believe in their right to do what they want when they want with no negative consequences.  In their view, the life of an innocent unborn child can’t be permitted to infringe on “a woman’s right to choose”.

Welfare in its myriad forms is the other litmus test issue.  Democrats have used it to keep blacks “on the farm”, so to speak.  If you oppose welfare and encourage individual excellence and achievement, quickly you will find yourself at odds with the Democratic Party.  I said “on the farm” for a reason.  It was Democrats in the Old South who owned plantations and slaves.  The Civil War may have ended slavery, but Democrats in the South preserved the spirit of that brutal practice by creating a social structure that kept “free” black men and women beholden to whites for their sustenance.  Under the “old” system, blacks were dependent on plantation owners.  The government plays that role under the “new” system.  As a Democrat, I had a hard time understanding how blacks could revere Abraham Lincoln because he freed the slaves, but they ignored the fact that he was a Republican.  I still have a hard time coming to terms with the obvious incongruity.

The power of abortion on demand and welfare to electrify the Democratic Party’s political base shouldn’t be underestimated.  Supporters of those issues will fight to the bitter end to protect those tenuous “rights” despite the fact they aren’t covered in the Constitution.  Democrats delight in demonizing gun owners, for example, who are determined to protect their right to bear arms even though it’s a constitutional right granted by the Second Amendment to the Constitution, but they fail to acknowledge that the “rights” they want to protect are made up out of thin air.

When Governor Robb’s term of office ended, I gravitated away from the Democratic Party.  After George Allen was elected to the Congress, the Republican Party in Albemarle County recruited me to run for the seat he vacated in the House of Delegates.  I had gotten to know George’s people quite well.  They saw me as a “nominal Democrat”—a Democrat in name only.  They were right, and I might have taken them up on their offer if they hadn’t told me that they wanted a candidate who wasn’t staunchly anti-abortion.  They thought they could win more votes if they didn’t come down so hard on that issue.  I told them that I would help them any way I could, but that they didn’t want me to be their candidate.

I’ve been an independent ever since.  I look at each candidate individually, and I vote for the person I think is best qualified.  Full disclosure: I haven’t voted for a Democrat since 1986 because I’m fundamentally opposed to abortion on demand, and I think welfare dependence has done at least as much damage to blacks in this country as slavery did.  Thankfully, each year more and more black people are coming around to the truth.  They’re beginning to recognize that the only way to prosper is to leave the plantation—i.e., the Democratic Party.

Today, support for Israel is the political issue that I care most about.  I cross party lines to find people who believe as strongly as I do in protecting Israel as the homeland of Jewish people.  As far as I’m concerned, their “right” to that land far surpasses any constitutional rights we have because their “rights” were granted and are protected by Yahweh.  (See “Yahweh’s Promises Concerning the Promised Land” in the column on the right.)

Richard Rives with Just the Facts

Most everyone has heard of the game Pass It On. Some people call it Chinese Whispers. The way the game works is that the first person in a line whispers a phrase in the ear of the person next to him. That person then passes the information down to the next, and so on. Most often, by the time the phrase gets to the end of the line it is so much different than the original phrase that it is extremely funny.

Well, it’s no different with history; except for the fact that it is not funny at all. Gradually, over time, the facts can become confused. By the time we receive the historical accounts we must be careful to be sure we have gotten it right, especially considering the fact that Satan, the god of this world, is the father of lies and the author of confusion. Not only can facts become confused, but many times they are intentionally confused by those who have an agenda.

Joseph Goebbels, the minister of propaganda for Adolph Hitler once said, “If you tell a lie loud enough and often enough people will believe it.” It has also been said that the most outrageous lies are sometimes the easiest to sell. No one can believe that anyone would have the nerve to lie like that. Well the idea that God has changed His commandments is a pretty big lie, yet many, over time, have been persuaded to believe that.

The Bible tells us that strait is the gate and narrow is the way which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it. Based on that, I believe that if you tell the truth loud enough and often enough, a few people will believe it. That’s what preaching the gospel is all about- sowing seeds of truth that have the potential to spring up and bear fruit.

Well, the loud truth is, that over time, the mystery religions of antiquity have been combined with true Biblical precepts, resulting in the contemporary Christianity we see around us today – A Christianity far different from that of first century believers.

In the Book of Jeremiah we are told that the Gentiles or nations shall come from the ends of the earth and shall say, Surely our fathers have inherited lies, vanity, and things wherein there is no profit. I encourage you to look into religious traditions that cannot be found in the Bible. Many have been inherited and have nothing to do with Jesus. Pass it on!

Contending for the faith once delivered to the Saints:
I’m Richard Rives with Just the Facts.

WATCH THIS WEEK’S VIDEO COMMENTARY HERE

SnyderTalk Commentary: This is the exact quote from Jeremiah that Richard referred to above:

“O Yahweh, my strength and my stronghold, and my refuge in the day of distress, to You the nations will come from the ends of the earth and say, ‘Our fathers have inherited nothing but falsehood, futility and things of no profit.’  Can man make gods for himself?  Yet they are not gods!  ‘Therefore behold, I am going to make them know—this time I will make them know My power and My might; and they shall know that My name is Yahweh.’” (Jeremiah 16: 19-21)

Richard is correct.  Over the millennia, grievous errors have crept into the church, and none of them is more problematic than the willful removal of Yahweh’s Name from the Scriptures and from daily use by His people.  How to I know?  Re-read the quote from Jeremiah above, and pay particular attention to the ending: “Therefore behold, I am going to make them know—this time I will make them know My power and My might; and they shall know that My name is Yahweh.”  Don’t underestimate the importance of Yahweh’s Name.
