Isaiah 45: 4-7—“For the sake of Jacob My servant, and Israel My chosen one, I have also called you by your name; I have given you a title of honor though you have not known Me. I am Yahweh, and there is no other; besides Me there is no God. I will gird you, though you have not known Me; that men may know from the rising to the setting of the sun that there is no one besides Me. I am Yahweh, and there is no other, the One forming light and creating darkness, causing well-being and creating calamity; I am Yahweh who does all these.”

Shalu shalom Yerushalayim: Pray for the peace of Jerusalem. (Psalm 122: 6)

“Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and President Shimon Peres discovered a new, and surprising, friend of Israel over the weekend: Fidel Castro. Netanyahu and Peres responded enthusiastically to an interview the former Cuban president granted to Atlantic magazine correspondent Jeffrey Goldberg in which Castro criticized Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad for denying the Holocaust and said he doesn’t think ‘anyone has been slandered more than the Jews.’”

“PRESIDENT OBAMA’S Middle East peace diplomacy has made some progress, but an early error still haunts it. The president’s ill-advised attempt to force a freeze of Israeli housing construction in Jerusalem and the West Bank could cause the breakdown this weekend of direct talks on a final settlement, only a month after they began.”

“Our media, talking heads, academics, and even our government strategic thinkers have been dealing with the Arab and Muslim world based on the politically-correct paradigm of even-handedness, attributing most international problems to poverty, misunderstandings, rectifying historical grievances, and, in the case of Israel, territorial disputes — while ignoring or underplaying key elements, such as the importance in Middle Eastern cultures of the values and importance of honor, shame, clan loyalties, theocratic religion, retaining absolute power, and frustrated religious imperialism.”

“For years and years, Americans have been told that Republicans are the party of special interest groups and Democrats are the party of the people. This is nonsense on stilts, but it is also something for another column. This column is about one particular special interest group whose allegiance to the Democrat party—and vice versa—is beyond dispute. It is a special interest group which, for all intents and purposes, has done more damage to our nation than any other—and continues to do so, even as Democrats continue to support it. The special interest group to which I am referring? Teachers unions.”

“When facing a tsunami, what do you do? Pray, and tell yourself stories. I am not privy to the Democrats’ private prayers, but I do hear the stories they’re telling themselves. “Barack Obama has a credibility problem. Obama has overpromised and under-delivered on countless issues such as the economy, job creation, healthcare reform and transparency. “Christopher Kennedy, chairman of the board of trustees of the University of Illinois, in a speech on September 23rd, convinced fellow trustees to deny the honorific emeritus status to recently retired education professor Bill Ayers. The reason: ‘a book dedicated in part to the man who murdered my father, Robert F. Kennedy’ (Sirhan Sirhan). That was in 1968, when Christopher was four years old. The work in point is Prairie Fire, the manifesto of the ‘communist men and women’ of the Weather Underground.”

“This week the Senate Foreign Relations Committee will begin addressing the proposed International Violence Against Women Act (I-VAWA) — S. 2982 and H.R. 4594. With a price tag of over $1 billion over the next five years, the bill will add to the hodge-podge collection of ‘progressive’ initiatives that are pushing the U.S. to the brink of financial crisis. Feminist groups are pushing action on the legislation before the November elections — for obvious reasons. Like so many feminist proposals, the rhetoric sounds great. Is there anybody, other than the jihadists, who is not opposed to violence against women?”

It’s too late to play games with insincere political power-hungry wannabes.

Last Thursday, I watched House Republicans present their “Pledge to America”.  Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) said, “Putting spending, putting the policy of economic growth in place and cleaning up the way Congress works is not only a stark contrast to this president and this Congress.  It’s a contrast to the way we conducted ourselves a decade ago. We spent too much money. We lost our way.”  He’s right of course, and he’s one House member I’ve come to respect not just because he says the right things.  Ryan is diligent, and he always comes to the table prepared to present and defend his positions.

Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) said, “The land of opportunity has become the land of shrinking prosperity….Our government has failed us.  We will take back our country.  We will restore for a better future. This is our pledge to you.”  He’s right too.  Senate Republicans and Republican Governor Haley Barbour of Mississippi, chairman of the Republican Governors Association, offered strong support for the initiative.

Democrats weren’t very enthusiastic.  Nadeam Elshami, a spokesman for House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) said, “Congressional Republicans are pledging to ship jobs overseas; blow a $700 billion hole in the deficit to give tax cuts to millionaires and billionaires; turn Social Security from a guaranteed benefit into a guaranteed gamble; once again, subject American families to the recklessness of Wall Street; and take away patients’ rights. Republicans want to return to the same failed economic policies that hurt millions of American and threatened our economy.”

I’m just guessing, but I’ll bet Elshami got the speaker’s approval before he made his vitriolic remarks.  I also think he’s speaking for the vast majority of Democrats in Congress.  They’re the people who ignored our wishes and shoved a government-run healthcare plan down our throats.  They are the same members of Congress who rejoiced as we bailed out General Motors to save the jobs of unionized autoworkers at the expense of non-union autoworkers and every taxpaying citizen.

Democrats in Congress may not get it, but the American people sure do.  An Associated Press-GfK Poll released last week indicated that “58 percent of independents and 60 percent of Republicans said politics is making them angry, compared with 31 percent of Democrats who said so. About 7 in 10 independents and Republicans were disgusted, compared with 4 in 10 Democrats, and independents and Republicans were likelier than Democrats to be disappointed, depressed and frustrated.”  It’s clear that the Democratic Party and its rank-and-file members are politically tone deaf, either that or they have their collective heads buried in the sand.

During the presentation ceremony, House Minority Leader John Boehner (R-OH) said, “Government is out of control in Washington, and we need to rein it in.”  He’s right was well, but where was he in 1994 when Republicans presented the “Contract with America”?  He was a second-term Congressman making his way up the leadership ladder in the House Republican hierarchy.  Boehner was firmly entrenched in the House Republican leadership structure by the time George Bush became president.  He wasn’t just an unwitting participant.  He was instrumental in the passage of mammoth spending bills that piled up debt and deficits.

Obviously, Boehner knows what to say, but I’m not confident that his heart is in the right place.  For example, two weeks ago he said that he would support letting the Bush tax cuts expire for the “wealthy”.  His magnanimous gesture was greeted by the Republican faithful with distain, and it didn’t take him one full day to change his mind and announce that he wouldn’t support a tax increase on anyone.

Boehner may be a gifted politician, but if I ever meet him in person, I think I’ll keep one hand on my wallet.  I think he’s a great example of the kind of person in Congress we need to replace.  At the very least, I don’t think he should be the leader in an effort to undo the damage he helped to inflict on the American people.  I’ve enjoyed about as much of Mr. Boehner as I can stand, thank you very much.

We can’t afford to take anything for granted.  It’s too late to play games with insincere political power-hungry wannabes.  Be they Republicans or be they Democrats, we have to hold their feet to the fire and make sure they actually do what they say they want to do.  If we’re not vigilant, this nation will go broke and the wellbeing of our children and grandchildren will be in jeopardy.

Climate Change Update:

THIS WEEK by Ken Haapala, Executive Vice President Science and Environmental Policy Project (SEPP)

Apparently re-invigorated by its August holiday, this week Congress renewed its anti-energy proposals. Several senators introduced a bill requiring a Renewable Electricity Standard (RES) that 3% of US electricity be generated by renewables by 2012 and 15% by 2021. Fred Singer discussed RES in his August 7 Science Editorial in TWTW. Government favored industries, such as solar and wind industries, require such a bill. The subsidies found in the stimulus bill run out at the end of this year and these the favored industries could not stand up to price competition from coal or natural gas. Nuclear and hydro are also out of favor.

As discussed previously in TWTW, American prosperity was built on reliable affordable energy, especially electricity. With reliable electricity, came great efficiency. Manufacturing can be conducted with precision, office workers could depend that the lights would turn on, elevators would work, and high tech industries could rely on dependable computer power. Solar, and particularly wind, give none of this. And the required generation from back-up sources uses these sources inefficiently. Also, there are serious questions about whether wind generation actually reduces carbon dioxide emissions.

In effect, many of our political leaders would have us believe that 21st Century prosperity can be obtained by replacing the dependable family car with an expensive to purchase and operate exotic car that often does not start and frequently dies in heavy traffic when it is needed the most. It may be a burden on others, but it makes the politicians “feel good” that they have “done something” to address a non-existent problem.

We can fully expect that such legislation will be supported by the chorus claiming that climate extremes demonstrate the need for action. Another claim will be to reduce oil imports from foreign countries; but, as mentioned in a previous TWTW only 1.1% of electricity generation comes from oil. And, of course, we will be bombarded with green jobs—which economic studies show are extremely expensive, temporary, and, generally, foreign-based.
