Isaiah 38: 21-22—Now Isaiah had said, “Let them take a cake of figs and apply it to the boil, that he may recover.” Then Hezekiah had said, “What is the sign that I shall go up to the house of Yahweh?”

SnyderTalk Commentary: Sometimes the truth hurts. If seeking the truth meant anything to Bashar al Assad, he wouldn’t try to prevent its discovery. As a third-world despot, he probably doesn’t have a clue what I’m talking about.

SnyderTalk Commentary: If voters in New York’s 9th congressional district don’t re-elect Rep. Weiner in November, I think he can build a career in Hollywood.  I can picture him co-starring with Jack Nicholson in a movie like “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest”.

SnyderTalk Editorial: Don’t be deceived by the rhetoric.  GM’s bailout didn’t save a single auto job.

This is simple economics.  Auto demand is not dependent on the companies making automobiles.  If GM had been allowed to go under after it failed, consumers would still have bought cars, but they would have purchased them from Ford or Chrysler or Toyota or Honda, for example.

If GM had been allowed to fail, the company’s assets would have been purchased by other auto manufacturers who would have deployed them profitably.  The jobs that were supposedly “saved” would have been transferred to the companies buying GM’s assets.  The bottom line is clear.  The same number of people would have been employed in the auto industry with or without GM.  So why the GM bailout?  This too is straightforward and simple.  GM’s bailout was designed to protect “union jobs” at GM in Michigan.

Ford didn’t accept any federal assistance, and it’s doing fine.  What did Ford do that GM didn’t do?  In the early 1980s during the second Arab oil embargo, Ford was looking bankruptcy squarely in the face.  They had to change their ways or fail, and they did change.  Ford redesigned its products, cut duplicative and unnecessary jobs, and retooled their entire operation from top to bottom.  GM survived that turbulent period without making the changes they should have made.  The bottom line?  Ford weathered the 2008 storm and came out strong.  GM accepted government money in 2008 and still hasn’t made all of the changes they have to make.

Who is the loser?  This may surprise you.  GM is the loser.  Eventually, GM will have to make the changes that they should have made in the early 1980s and in 2008.  The bailout simply allowed GM to continue operations without having to get serious about the problems that led to their near demise.  In a competitive world, GM can’t continue operating if Ford and Toyota and Honda and BMW and Chrysler, for example, are making better cars and selling them at lower prices for comparable models.

As voters and taxpayers, we need to know what actually happened with the GM bailout because our money is being used to prop up companies that have shown no inclination to compete.  In effect, politicians are buying votes, union votes, with our money, and they’re doing it brazenly.

The next time you hear about the number of auto jobs saved by the GM bailout, remember that no jobs were saved and GM is still not prepared to compete.  It’s true that GM products are getting better, but Ford products, for example, are better than GM products, and quality at Ford is improving faster than quality at GM.  Consumers will make that obvious in due course with their buying decisions.

GM’s new Chevy Volt is a good case in point.  It costs about $40,000, and it won’t accommodate the typical American family.  If you were considering the purchase of a $40,000 automobile, would you buy a Volt?  Most people won’t, and the Volt demonstrates that GM continues to make products that people don’t want or need and can’t afford.  In the end, that’s a formula for disaster, and no amount of government funding can change that reality.
