Isaiah 34: 3-4—“So their slain will be thrown out, and their corpses will give off their stench, and the mountains will be drenched with their blood. And all the host of heaven will wear away, and the sky will be rolled up like a scroll; all their hosts will also wither away as a leaf withers from the vine, or as one withers from the fig tree.”

Shalu shalom Yerushalayim: Pray for the peace of Jerusalem. (Psalm 122: 6)

SnyderTalk Editorial: Solving the Islamist Terrorist Problem Will Require a Concerted Global Effort

Islamist terrorists violate the laws of every nation, even nations that sponsor their activities such as Syria and Iran.  They fund their operations through a combination of extortion, drug smuggling, kidnapping, a vast array of other illegal activities, and contributions from sympathizers around the world.  They use summary executions to control dissent in their ranks, and they intimidate local populations where they congregate to maintain their grip on power.  They show no allegiance to any country, and like a cancer, wherever they are allowed to stay they spread by recruiting members of the indigenous population.  Eventually, they try to take control.  No country on earth can afford to ignore the menacing threat of Islamist terrorism.  Dealing with the problem isn’t easy, and what we’ve done so far has been less than effective.  Like weeds in a garden, they keep coming back.

Ironically, the same laws that Islamist terrorists routinely ignore serve as their protection.  Nations coming under attack from Islamist terrorists must cross recognized international borders—borders which terrorists don’t respect—to apprehend suspected culprits and enforce the law.  That means nations targeted by Islamist terrorists need permission, or they must go to war with nations providing safe havens for terrorists.  Afghanistan under Taliban rule is a good case in point.  It was a refuge for the Islamist terrorists who carried out the 9/11 attacks.  Following 9/11, the US together with our NATO allies went to war in Afghanistan to destroy the Taliban.

The Afghanistan War is the longest war in our nation’s history, and it’s far from over.  Hamid Karzai, Afghanistan’s current president, is known as a corrupt politician, and his brother is reputed to be a leader among drug smugglers in Afghanistan.  Their first priority is to protect and enrich themselves.  Right now, they see NATO and the US as their best bet for securing their futures, but things can change in a hurry.  If we lose our determination, the Taliban will be back, and the Karzai brothers will be just as loyal to them as they have been to us.

When we went to war with the Taliban, they fled for the hills in the Tora Bora region of Afghanistan and the Northern provinces of Pakistan.  Ostensibly, Pakistan is our ally in the war with the Taliban, but so far Pakistan’s leaders have been unwilling or unable to root them out.  They fear the warlords in the Northern provinces who are cozy with the Taliban, and they are afraid that the Taliban may join forces with people in the general population who harbor Islamist tendencies and foment a civil war.  As long as Islamist terrorists can hole up in any country, they remain a threat to the people of the world.

The only effective way to deal with Islamist terrorism is to go to war with the terrorists wherever they are.  That requires a concerted effort on the part of peace loving nations around the world.  Problem is global leaders can’t reach a meeting of the minds.  Many of them think that they can stave off an attack in their countries by not coming down too hard on terrorists.  The evidence doesn’t support that belief, but they hold fast to it anyway.  Then there are countries like Iran, Syria, and Venezuela whose political leaders provide protection for Islamist terrorists to advance their political agendas.  Unless peace loving nations are willing to face the facts and root out the enemy, the terrorists will simply bide their time until we lose resolve, and then they will reemerge even stronger than before.

Economics are part of the problem.  Russia and China, for instance, continue to do business with state sponsors of terrorist activities as if it didn’t matter, as do many countries in Europe.  They should realize that mad dogs bite indiscriminately, and eventually all of them will suffer serious consequences for their shortsightedness.  Russia, in particular, should know better, but so should France, Germany, Great Britain, Spain, Turkey, Jordan, Egypt, and Saudi Arabia to name just a few.  All of them have internal Islamist terrorist problems, and the threat from internal Islamist terrorists is growing in the US.  No country is immune to this plague, and unless we work together to stamp it out, all of us will suffer.

Unlike the US and our NATO allies, Islamist terrorists have no “timetable for withdrawal”.  They have proven that they are willing to fight until the bitter end, or until the last one of them is dead.  Those aren’t my words.  That’s what they say, and they glorify martyrdom in the pursuit of their goals.  Contrast that philosophy with the public statements of Western leaders and the views of journalists:

What exactly are the goals of Islamist terrorists?  Read the articles below:

Their goal is to “hoist the banner of al-Jihad” in every country on the planet and impose Sharia law.  Again, those are not my words.  That’s what they are saying.  Are we listening?

One day, the world will be forced to confront Islamist terrorism in a concerted fashion.  My hope and my prayer is that it will happen before a world war brought about by Islamist terrorists.  The longer we wait, the more difficult it will be to solve the problem and the more likely it will be that we will have an all-out war.  My fear is that it will take a world war to get people’s attention.

That said, there will be serious consequences if we prosecute a global war against Islamist terrorists. It’s possible that thousands or maybe even hundreds of thousands (conceivably even millions) of innocent people will die in the process.  At the end of the campaign, I think global leaders will determine that nothing like this can ever be allowed to happen again.  Since religious differences led to the conflict, there will inevitably be a strenuous effort to reduce or eliminate religious tension.  I expect political leaders to use all the influence they can muster, including force if necessary, to persuade religious leaders and believers from all faiths to look beyond their differences and adopt the philosophy that “we all worship the same god” but we worship him in different ways.  If I’m right, that will set the stage for a global confrontation with Yahweh.

As unpleasant as my speculation may be to many of you, I believe I’ve laid out the path we’re on correctly, and I’ll be amazed if something like what I’ve described doesn’t happen.  I’m not prophesying.  I’ve simply presented a reasonable interpretation of the available facts.

SEPP SCIENCE EDITORIAL #20-2010 (June 26, 2010)

by S. Fred Singer, President, Science and Environmental Policy Project (SEPP)

Testing the Hypothesis of Anthropogenic Global Warming (AGW)

*S. Fred Singer, University of Virginia: invited talk for Interface 2010 Statistics Conference, Seattle, WA; presented June 17, 2010

The key question is: are observed climate changes of the twentieth century primarily human-caused or of natural origin? In principle, both explanations are plausible. The IPCC [2007] is 90% sure that greenhouse (GH) gases are the primary cause. The NIPCC report [2008] “Nature, not human activity, rules the climate” reaches the opposite conclusion.

To test the AGW hypothesis, the recent IPCC report tries to show that the global mean surface temperature of the past century can be accounted for by a combination of models that require a major contribution from GH forcing; the NIPCC regards this IPCC attempt merely as an exercise in ‘curve-fitting’ with suitably chosen parameters. Both sides agree, however, that the ‘fingerprint’ method (comparing the observed and modeled patterns of atmospheric temperature trends in the tropics) may serve as a suitable test.

The IPCC tried to use the ‘fingerprint’ approach in their 1996 report, but without success. The US-CCSP report 1.1 [2006] showed that the fingerprints did not match. Douglass et al [2007] extended the CCSP result, but have been challenged by Santer et al [2008], who claimed that observations and models were “consistent” – a conclusion that is ostensibly in support of AGW.  In response, I have tried to show [Singer 2010] that the claimed consistency is spurious; it depends on (1) the validity of a “new data set” for tropospheric temperatures and on (2) a correct evaluation of the uncertainties of the model results.

(1) I have developed a Discriminant that definitely seems to favor the former data set, derived from balloon-borne radiosondes. (2) I also show that by ignoring both structural and chaotic uncertainties, Santer et al have incorrectly calculated model errors– thereby invalidating their arguments in favor of AGW.
