SnyderTalk Commentary—As we move into the Middle East “peace process”, you really need to read Yahweh’s Promises Concerning the Promised Land. I want to be on Yahweh’s side. I know His plan will work, and I know that Yahweh doesn’t make idle promises. As He told Jeremiah, “I am watching over My word to perform it.” (Jeremiah 1: 12) He also said, “Do not think that I came to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I did not come to abolish but to fulfill.” (Matthew 5: 17) You can count on Yahweh fulfilling every promise He ever made. If you don’t like Yahweh’s plan and you decide to work against Him, you will be on the losing team. That’s not a pleasant thought.

TAU professors denounce Dershowitz for speech against left

SnyderTalk Commentary—This is a quote from the article above: “In a letter to the university’s president, Joseph Klafter, a group of faculty members demanded that Tel Aviv University disassociate itself from Dershowitz’s comments and ‘unequivocally defend the freedom of expression of all the members of the academic community.’”

The irony is breathtaking. Alan Dershowitz is a world renowned lawyer and professor who was in Israel to receive an honorary doctorate from Tel Aviv University. In his speech, he criticized, some say condemned, faculty who use their coveted and secure positions to lambast Israel. The quote above indicates that a group of senior faculty at TVU were so angry about Dershowitz’s remarks that they want TVU’s president to make a public statement indicating that he disagrees with Dershowitz.

Exactly what was Dershowitz doing? He was expressing his opinions. The fact that he thinks TVU faculty are left-leaning and that they go too far in their criticisms of the Israeli government is not the issue. Dershowitz has a right to his opinions even if the TVU faculty don’t agree with them. The irony is that they demand the freedom to say whatever they please, but they would deny that right to Dershowitz even though there is good reason to believe he is correct.

I wonder if the TVU faculty realize how ridiculous they sound. Probably not. I have some academic experience myself, and I know for a fact that left-leaning faculty tend to dominate the academic ranks. This is a serious problem at most Western universities, and it needs to be addressed. It wouldn’t be so bad if they just presented their views, but they tend to think they have a duty to stamp out opposing views—especially moderate and right-leaning ones.

Take climate change, for instance. Left-leaning faculty are probably the most ardent and vociferous supporters of the “man is responsible for global warming” theory. The facts don’t line up behind their opinions (see the Climate Change page in the column on the right for details), but that doesn’t seem to matter. They adhere to their opinions the way a baby clutches a security blanket. If you dare to point out the flaws in their theory, you are branded as a heretic or a Neanderthal or worse. The intransigence of left-leaning faculty helped to keep the truth about climate change from getting out, but eventually a left-leaning faculty member at a British university inadvertently let the cat out of the bag. Wouldn’t society be better off if university faculty adhered to academic standards that encourage all faculty to pursue the truth even if it challenges the existing orthodoxy? Of course we would.

Shame on the TVU faculty who want to squelch differing opinions. They have revealed their true colors. I hope the TVU president recognizes their obvious double standard.
