Yahweh neither says nor implies that the Torah can impart salvation or life, but He does say we should live by the Laws in the Torah and that not obeying His Laws will bring us death. Yet, again and again Yahweh declares that faith in Him is the requirement for salvation. For example, take a look at Isaiah 43: 11, Joel 2: 32 (Joel 3: 5 in the Tanach), Acts 2: 21, and Romans 10: 13. This is the central message in the Scriptures.

Today’s Feature

Yahweh never intended for the Torah to impart life to His people.  In fact, the Torah brought us death, because it showed us how pure and holy Yahweh is and how filthy and dirty we are compared to Him.

The Torah is perfect and good, and it shows us how much we need a Redeemer and Savior.  But it cannot impart life.  In fact, it exposes us as sinners who are guilty and shows us that we deserve God’s punishment.

Paul explained it this way in Romans 3: 19-28, “Now we know that whatever the Law says, it speaks to those who are under the Law, so that every mouth may be closed and all the world may become accountable to God; because by the works of the Law no flesh will be justified in His sight; for through the Law comes the knowledge of sin.  But now apart from the Law the righteousness of God has been manifested, being witnessed by the Law and the Prophets, even the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all those who believe; for there is no distinction; for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, being justified as a gift by His grace through the redemption which is in Christ Jesus; whom God displayed publicly as a propitiation in His blood through faith.  This was to demonstrate His righteousness, because in the forbearance of God He passed over the sins previously committed; for the demonstration, I say, of His righteousness at the present time, so that He would be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus.  Where then is boasting?  It is excluded.  By what kind of law?  Of works?  No, but by a law of faith.  For we maintain that a man is justified by faith apart from works of the Law.”

SnyderTalk® Commentary

Beginning today, SnyderTalk Commentary will focus on the Book of Exodus a chapter at a time until I have covered the entire book.  As we go through Exodus, I want you to pay particular attention the use of the Name “Yahweh.”

First and foremost, Exodus is about Yahweh introducing Himself to the world by Name.  He chose to reveal Himself to the Children of Israel in Egypt which was the only superpower at that time.  With the 10 plagues, Yahweh sent a clear message to the Children of Israel, Egypt, and everyone else that no so-called “god” is a match for Him.  Finally, with the destruction of Pharaoh, who was regarded as a god in Egypt, and his army in the Red Sea, Yahweh made it clear that no human being is his equal.  Exodus also introduces the Ten Commandments and instructions about right living that Yahweh gave to the Children of Israel as they moved toward the Promised Land.

I will be using the New Jerusalem Bible since it places the Name “Yahweh” where it belongs in the Old Testament most of the time.  If you have never read a Bible containing Yahweh’s Name, you will be amazed.

Exodus Chapter 1

  1. These are the names of the Israelites who went with Jacob to Egypt, each of them went with his family:
  2. Reuben, Simeon, Levi and Judah,
  3. Issachar, Zebulun and Benjamin,
  4. Dan and NaphtaliGad and Asher.
  5. In all, the descendants of Jacob numbered seventy persons.  Joseph was in Egypt already.
  6. Then Joseph died, and his brothers, and all that generation.
  7. But the Israelites were fruitful and prolific; they became so numerous and powerful that eventually the whole land was full of them.
  8. Then there came to power in Egypt a new king who had never heard of Joseph.
  9. ‘Look,’ he said to his people, ‘the  Israelites are now more numerous and stronger than we are.
  10. We must take precautions to stop them from increasing any further, or if war should break out, they might join the ranks of our enemies. They might take arms against us and then escape from the country.’
  11. Accordingly they put taskmasters over the  Israelites to wear them down by forced labour. In this way they built the store-cities of Pithom and Rameses for Pharaoh.
  12. But the harder their lives were made, the more they increased and spread, until people came to fear the Israelites.
  13. So the Egyptians gave them no mercy in the demands they made,
  14. making their lives miserable with hard labour: with digging clay, making bricks, doing various kinds of field—work—all sorts of labour that they imposed on them without mercy.
  15. The king of Egypt then spoke to the Hebrew midwives, one of whom was called Shiphrah, and the other Puah.
  16. ‘When you attend Hebrew women in childbirth,’ he said, ‘look at the two stones.  If it is a boy, kill him; if a girl, let her live.’
  17. But the midwives were God-fearing women and did not obey the orders of the king of Egypt, but allowed the boys to live.
  18. So the king of Egypt summoned the midwives and said to them, ‘What do you mean by allowing the boys to live?’
  19. The midwives said to Pharaoh, ‘Hebrew women are not like Egyptian women, they are hardy and give birth before the midwife can get to them.’
  20. For this, God was good to the midwives, and the people went on increasing and growing more powerful;
  21. and since the midwives feared God, he gave them families of their own.
  22. Pharaoh then gave all his people this command: ‘Throw every new-born boy into the river, but let all the girls live.’

  1. I don’t usually write on blogs but had to on yours. You have a very unique writing style. A lot of people don’t have that touch, they just drone on and on in the most boring way. But not you – thanks! I love visiting other sites about raising a baby! It seems like there is always something to learn about it. I don’t have time to read all the articles here right now, I found this site while I was trying to find something else on ask.com, but I’ve bookmarked your homepage and will visit again soon to read the latest.
