Today’s Feature
I’ll give our president this much. He’s a good democrat.
This feature points to an undeniable fact. Some of our nation’s cities are more dangerous than war zones in Iraq and Afghanistan. I’m not going to engage in a debate about the use of our troops in foreign nations in this short space, but I want to say this. We have more to fear at home than we do from foreign enemies.
A while back, The Atlantic Monthly ran a feature article that said straightforwardly that our nation can’t come to grips with its crime and education problems because at the root you find that they are predominantly associated with our black population. They were right. A just society, a colorblind society, can’t afford to look the other way just because the culprits belong to a particular racial or ethnic group. That’s something our president and his Harvard law professor friend need to understand. It’s time to deal with the real problems we face regardless of race, creed, or national origin.
Many years ago, I served on a Blue Ribbon Commission on Education in Albemarle County Virginia. One of my fellow commissioners was a black woman with whom I served in the Albemarle County Democratic Party. On several occasions, I made the point to the commission that we should try to work more choice options into our school system. “Give students and their parents choices,” I said, “and they’ll make good decisions.” One day my democrat colleague and friend took me aside and told me that she couldn’t support my choice initiatives. She said, “Neil, if we give blacks a choice, they’ll choose to go to school with other blacks.” I was at a loss for words.
Who is the racist? The one who says that reasonable people can make reasonable choices when presented with the facts, or the one who says that blacks can’t be counted on to make reasonable choices. I learned my lesson about the Democrat Party. I hope others do too…before it’s too late. I’ll give our president this much. He’s a good democrat.
