Matthew Levitt—Kidnapped Israeli Teens Compel Scrutiny of Hamas’ International Finances:

As Israeli military and intelligence officers fan out across the West Bank searching for the three kidnapped Israeli teens (one is a dual U.S. citizen), they are targeting not only known Hamas militant operatives but also the movement’s political, social, and financial institutions. These arrests and raids are aimed not only at uncovering intelligence on the perpetrators of the kidnapping and location of the three boys, but also at uprooting the financial and civilian infrastructure that the movement has worked long and hard to rebuild in the West Bank.

In fact, Israel has been quietly targeting Hamas’s financial infrastructure for some time now as part of Operation Biur Hametz. (The name refers to the pre-Passover custom of burning any leftover bread before the onset of the holiday.) Much of Israel’s focus the past few months has been on Hamas’s financing from abroad, but the kidnappings have thrust this campaign into full throttle.

Hamas’s European Finance Network

Seven days into the search for the kidnapped boys, the Israeli Defense Ministry banned the UK-based charity Islamic Relief Worldwide (IRW), accusing the organization of serving as “one of the sources of Hamas’s funding and a means for raising funds from various countries in the world.” Several IRW chapters, including those in the West Bank and Gaza Strip, were run by Hamas members, according to a statement.

#####

Samuel Rodriguez and Robert Gittelson: Christian Firewall Against 21st Century Anti-Semitism—We feel that the actions of the Presbyterian Church can best be described as misguided, reprehensible and insensitive to the fact that violence against Israel is part and parcel of the underlying problem that deters a meaningful peace agreement between Palestine and Israel. How can Israel in good faith continue in what seems a unilateral attempt to forge a two-state peace solution between themselves and the Palestinian Authority, when the PA operates in partnership with Hamas, a certifiable terrorist organization bent on the destruction of Israel, and everything that Israel stands for? How can Israel make peace with a people that cannot and will not agree that the State of Israel has even a right to exist?

Richard Landes: Why the Arab World Is Lost in an Emotional Nakba, and How to Keep it There— Anthropologists and legal historians have long identified certain tribal cultures—warrior, nomadic—with a specific set of honor codes whose violation brings debilitating shame. The individual who fails to take revenge on the killer of a clansman brings shame upon himself (makes him a woman) and weakens his clan, inviting more open aggression. In World War II, the United States sought the help of anthropologists like Ruth Benedict to explain the play of honor and shame in driving Japanese military behavior, resulting in both intelligence victories in the Pacific Theater and her book The Chrysanthemum and the Sword. Taking her lead, the great classicist E.R. Dodds analyzed the millennium-long shift in Greek culture from a “shame” culture to a “guilt” culture in his Greeks and the Irrational, where he contrasted a world in which fame and reputation, rather than conscience and fear of divine retribution, drive men to act.

Khaled Abu Toameh: Hamas Prepares for War as Abbas Talks Peace— The Fatah-Hamas reconciliation accord has had no moderating effect on the Islamist movement. On the contrary, Hamas seems headed toward more extremism, and its recent actions and statements show it is preparing for war against Israel, despite Abbas’s assurances that the new government would reject violence. Former Hamas Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh announced this week that, in the West Bank, the intifada against Israel has already begun. As in previous years, summer camps are being used to give Palestinian schoolchildren training in guerrilla warfare. Abbas has thus far failed to condemn his Hamas partners for threatening to fire rockets at Israel. Like many in the international community, Abbas is continuing to bury his head in the sand by refusing to see what his Hamas partners are up to.

Pnina Sharvit Baruch: The Fight against Hamas: The Legal Angle— Following the abduction of three teenagers on June 12, 2014, Israel launched a campaign against Hamas in the West Bank that involves intensive activity on the ground, including searches, arrests, interrogations, confiscation of property, and other actions. The campaign is consistent with Israel’s obligations and rights to guarantee its security and the security of its citizens. To the extent that these measures involve arrests, there is a legal framework that regulates their implementation. Legal difficulty, however, arises in regard to two potential measures, the expulsion of Hamas members from the area and the demolition of terrorists’ homes. The questionable legality of these steps must be factored into the decision making process undertaken by Israel’s leadership. • Abduction of youths is a despicable act. Hamas must be attacked and terrorism must be quelled, and there are many actions that can be taken to this end within the framework of the law. However, there is a price to be paid for actions of dubious legality, both internationally and domestically. Decision makers must take this price into account.

Moshe Phillips and Benyamin Korn: Surprise! ‘Peaceful’ Palestinian Leaders Tolerate Terror Buildup— One of the most important, but least-reported stories connected to the recent kidnapping of three Israeli teenagers by Palestinian terrorists is the discovery of numerous terrorist tunnels and weapons depots in areas ruled by the “peaceful” Palestinian Authority. The conventional wisdom is that Palestinian Authority chairman Mahmoud Abbas is a “moderate” who opposes terrorism and wants to make peace with Israel. PA spokesmen have assured Western reporters that they oppose the Hamas terrorists and are “cooperating” with Israel in the search for the abducted teens. But what Israeli soldiers have found in their search missions tells a very different story.

David Pollock: 60 Percent of Palestinians Say Goal Is Reclaiming All of Historic Palestine—A new West Bank-Gaza public opinion survey conducted on June 15-17, 2014, shows that fewer than 30% of Palestinians now support a “two-state solution”: a West Bank-Gaza Palestinian state in lasting peace with Israel. Moreover, 60% say that the five-year goal “should be to work toward reclaiming all of historic Palestine, from the river to the sea.” Nearly two-thirds said “resistance should continue until all of historic Palestine is liberated,” while only a third said that “it might be necessary to give up some of our claims so that our people and our children can have a better life.”

Alan Baker: Palestinian Manipulation of the International Community— The lengthy and continuing conflict between Israel and the Palestinians has evolved, over the years, through various phases or cycles of terror on the one hand, and attempts at peace-making on the other. These cycles have ranged from sporadic, individual, and organized acts of violence, terror, and armed conflict by the various Palestinian terror organizations, individually or collectively. They have included organized, centrally orchestrated, and systematic military action by shelling of Israeli towns and villages by Hamas, Islamic Jihad, and other terrorist organizations based in, and emanating from, the Gaza Strip. Similarly, these cycles have often evolved into periods of outright low and medium-intensity armed conflict, with reaction by Israel to the Palestinian terror attacks, in defense of its towns, villages, and civilian population. On the other hand, there have also been phases and cycles that have included periodic attempts, at the behest of, and with the active involvement of, the international community, to seek a solution to the conflict through negotiations and attempts at reconciliation and bon-voisinage between the two sides and the two peoples.

Alan Baker: The Hostage Crisis and Palestinian Manipulation—The capture of three Israeli youths by a Palestinian terror organization doesn’t really seem to bother or interest anyone outside Israel. Moreover, Palestinian propaganda has repeatedly instilled the idea that any action by Israel is wrong. A new book recently published under the auspices of the Jerusalem Center for Public Affairs exposes the extent to which the Palestinian leadership and institutions are continuously and systematically manipulating the international community, with the aim of advancing the very selective, partisan, misleading and patently false narrative that lies at the root of the present apathy.

David M. Weinberg: A believing nation— As I walked into work yesterday after a two-week study trip abroad, a colleague grabbed me to talk about the kidnapped boys: Naftali, Eyal and Gil-ad. She knows that I live in Nof Ayalon, Naftali Frenkel’s neighborhood, and that his parents are my friends. “The mothers of those three boys are amazing,” she said. “Especially Rachel Frenkel, who spoke so eloquently and inspiringly at the U.N. in Geneva this week. It must be easier for them as religious women to handle the situation, since they have faith to rely upon. Oy, sometimes I wish that I had such faith too. I am secular.” I responded to her philosophically. A world without faith is a harsh and cold world, I said, a world without sustainable hope. Religious people indeed believe that the ultimate reality at the heart of the universe is not blind to our existence, deaf to our prayers, and indifferent to our fate. Faith in God’s providence is a central tenet of the Jewish religion; indeed, of all the world’s major religions.

Emily B. Landau: Coming Soon: The U.S.-Iran Blame Game—A month ahead of the deadline for the current negotiations between Iran and the P5+1 over a comprehensive nuclear deal, the stated positions of the two sides could not be further apart. This negotiation is fundamentally not about achieving some middle ground on the nuclear issues. Rather, the onus is on Iran to adhere to international demands after it violated its NPT commitments, cheated and deceived, and lost the trust of the international community. The Obama administration has been bending over backwards since October 2013 so as not to upset Iran, with the aim of preempting any Iranian attempt to blame it of acting in bad faith. Yet despite the U.S. administration’s best efforts, Iran is poised to blame it anyway. For Iran, beyond a P5+1-Iran deal which enables it to maintain the critical components of its nuclear program while still gaining sanctions relief, an impasse in the talks would be the next best outcome. Iran would emphatically claim to have negotiated in good faith, and been blocked by an uncompromising U.S.

4--Scripture of the Day Yahweh

Genesis 13: 14-18

14 Yahweh said to Abram, after Lot had separated from him, “Now lift up your eyes and look from the place where you are, northward and southward and eastward and westward; 15 for all the land which you see, I will give it to you and to your descendants forever. 16 I will make your descendants as the dust of the earth, so that if anyone can number the dust of the earth, then your descendants can also be numbered. 17 Arise, walk about the land through its length and breadth; for I will give it to you.” 18 Then Abram moved his tent and came and dwelt by the oaks of Mamre, which are in Hebron, and there he built an altar to Yahweh.

14--Blessings from Revelation 2

Blessings in the Book of Revelation is a book that you need to read, especially now.  There are blessings throughout the Scriptures but Revelation is the only book in the Bible actually containing a specific blessing for reading it. It’s repeated twice, once at the beginning and again at the end. This is the reason that I believe Revelation should be the first step toward studying biblical prophecy. Though not easy to do, Revelation can be broken down and understood by anyone, not just the academic elite. So, Revelation’s blessings are for everyone.  Click here to order the eBook.  Click here to order the paperback.
