G’mar Hatimah Tovah

Yom Kippur is the Day of Atonement and is considered the holiest and most solemn day on the Jewish calendar. Because Yom Kippur is a fast day, it is appropriate to wish your Jewish friends an “Easy Fast” on Yom Kippur, or in Hebrew “Tzom Kal.”  The traditional Yom Kippur greeting is “G’mar Hatimah Tovah” or “May You Be Sealed for a Good Year (in the Book of Life).” This reflects the Jewish view of Yom Kippur as the day when God seals our fates (determined by our actions) for the upcoming year in the Books of Life or Death.

HalleluYah!

Four times in Revelation chapter 19 the word “HalleluYah” appears.[i]  Sometimes it is spelled “Alleluia” or “Hallelujah,” and sometimes the “Y” is not capitalized.  “HalleluYah” is a combination of two Hebrew words: “hallelu” which means praise and “Yah” which is a short form of the Name “Yahweh” that is found in several psalms.

The word “HalleluYah” does not appear in any other place in the New Testament.  This fact is interesting in itself, and the way the word is used in Revelation is revealing.  Revelation chapter 18 talks about the destruction of the “harlot Babylon” at the End of Days, and chapter 19 talks about the second coming of the Messiah:

“After these things I heard something like a loud voice of a great multitude in heaven saying, ‘HalleluYah!  Salvation and glory and power belong to our God; because His judgments are true and righteous; for He has judged the great harlot who was corrupting the earth with her immorality, and He has avenged the blood of His bond-servants on her.’

And a second time they said, ‘HalleluYah!  Her smoke rises up forever and ever.’  And the twenty-four elders and the four living creatures fell down and worshiped God who sits on the throne saying, ‘Amen.  HalleluYah!’

And a voice came from the throne, saying, ‘Give praise to our God, all you His bond-servants, you who fear Him, the small and the great.’

Then I heard something like the voice of a great multitude and like the sound of many waters and like the sounds of mighty peals of thunder, saying, ‘HalleluYah!  For Yahweh our God, the Almighty, reigns.  Let us rejoice and be glad and give the glory to Him, for the marriage of the Lamb has come and His bride has made herself ready.’”[ii]

After this, Yahweh comes to earth in Person to complete His work and to claim His bride.  HalleluYah.  Those who know Him should praise His Name and rejoice because He is about to do wonderful and marvelous things that will surpass the things He did in Egypt at the time of the Exodus.  We do not know the day or the hour, but He will not hold back forever.  To believe otherwise is foolish.

Blessings in the Book of Revelation is a book that you need to read, especially now.  There are blessings throughout the Scriptures but Revelation is the only book in the Bible actually containing a specific blessing for reading it. It’s repeated twice, once at the beginning and again at the end. This is the reason that I believe Revelation should be the first step toward studying biblical prophecy. Though not easy to do, Revelation can be broken down and understood by anyone, not just the academic elite.
