Jeremiah 12: 14-17:
Thus says Yahweh concerning all My wicked neighbors who strike at the inheritance with which I have endowed My people Israel, “Behold I am about to uproot them from their land and will uproot the house of Judah from among them. And it will come about that after I have uprooted them, I will again have compassion on them; and I will bring them back, each one to his inheritance and each one to his land. Then if they will really learn the ways of My people, to swear by My name, ‘As Yahweh lives,’ even as they taught My people to swear by Baal, they will be built up in the midst of My people. But if they will not listen, then I will uproot that nation, uproot and destroy it,” declares Yahweh. (Jeremiah 12: 14-17)

Despite what they say in their commercials, the smartest people in the world don’t write for the NYT. I just wish E.J. Dionne would make the jump from The Post to The Times. That move would improve the quality of both papers.

The world we’re entering is nothing like the world you grew up in.
Timothy Ash, a senior fellow at the Hoover Institution and professor of European studies at Oxford University, had an interesting op-ed piece in Friday’s Los Angeles Times titled A new world disorder. In it, he explains what business and political leaders who met in Davos, Switzerland this week think about our changing global economy. Below are some of the takeaways:
- “This is not the total collapse of liberal democratic capitalism that some had feared at the dramatic World Economic Forum meeting here in early 2009, but nor is it the great reform of Western capitalism, then the devout hope of Davos.”
- “Western capitalism survives, but limping, wounded and carrying a heavy load of debt, inequality, demography, neglected infrastructure, social discontent and unrealistic expectations.”
- China, India, and Brazil “are surging ahead, exploiting the advantages of backwardness, and their economic dynamism is rapidly being translated into political power.”
Those facts are undeniable as far as they go, but I’ll go one step further. We are witnessing a changing of the guard so to speak in the global economy. I don’t expect the US to become an insignificant player on the global stage, but I do expect US political and economic power to wane relative to China, India, Brazil, and Russia. Today’s change is much like the changing of the guard following World War II when Great Britain finally surrendered it’s crown to the US.
Below are some things you need to know about where we are heading:
- The rules that will govern the emerging global economy have not been written yet.
- When they’re written, the US won’t have disproportionate influence.
I hope you are paying attention, because the world we’re entering is nothing like the world you grew up in.
